Great quick game. It's an interesting math puzzle. I prefer it with 4 players. I like having to 'react' to what other players are doing instead of the cold calculations of a two player game.

A decade ago, this was in my Top 10.

My highest: Dominion (61)
My lowest: Kill Doctor Lucky (2023)

My lowest owned game is Trivial Pursuit: The Year in Review – Questions about 1993, but it's not ranked.

Rank 1022 is Kingdoms. I don't know this game, but I know it was re-implememted by Beowulf: The Movie Board Game which I know (and don't like very much, but also don't hate - so it's a fair in-between)

Last week's gaming:

 8   Button Men x2
5   Little Dungeon: Turtle Rock x2
 7   Cosmic Wimpout x3
 7   Kingdoms

Johanna back at home after two months of rehearsal, and Boo wanted her to join us in a game. "Something quick with not too many rules for me to learn," she says. Boo nixes a couple of suggestions, but perks up when I offer Kingdoms. Johanna enjoys tile-layers, the rules here are almost trivial and the exceptions minimal, so off we go. I have a small lead after the first round, and Johanna is far behind. Boo pulls off a couple of huge scores in round two while Johanna catches up to me as they both bash the leader. In the third and final round, they both seem to forget that I'm no longer the leader and by the final tally, Johanna has squeaked out a win by a few points over Boo while I'm about a hundred points back.

I enjoy the game, although it appears to be another I regularly fare poorly at. It's not like connection games, where I know while the game is going on I'm lost. It is more like Jaipur, where I always feel like I'm competitive right until the scoring is over . . .

Glad my girls are fans, too. I have a slew of the old FFG Silver Line games (picked up cheaply over the years during the FFG holiday sales) and most never see play. I love Scarab Lords, and played it at lunchtimes way back when I had a fellow gamer in the office. And I gave a couple of others at spin at variuos Meetups ten years or so back (Quicksand, King of the Beasts, etc.) But many others (Knights of Charlemagne, Mag·Blast (Second Edition), etc.) are still unplayed on my shelf . . .

As for new purchases, I'd held off on picking up Hollandspiele's weird new economic game - For-Ex - until today so I could save on shipping, since I also had to have their "baby's first wargame" release, Bitskrieg which dropped today.

I've been following the thread over at the For-Ex forum where people are concerned about how fragile the game may be, and I have to say this is making me more, not less excited to play . . .

-----

Johanna's production of The Laramie Project was a triumph. Sold out in six hours, was technically and artistically stunning, and from the closing moment of the first act through the final moment of the play, I and most of the audience was in tears. The play is a timely reminder, even 20 years later, that "This is who we are."

-----

Halloween night, and my plan is to watch The House On The Witchpit for the first and last time.

Let me explain.

My buddy from back in our high school days, Pat Higgins, is a micro-budget horror writer / director / producer. He has a handful of well written and interesting movies out in the wild (my favorite being the horror / romcom Hellbride, the best reviewed being the horror / mockumentary The Devil's Music. He has blogged in the past about how the easier it became to make and release a movie, the safer people became in their choice of what to watch. Unable to compete with big marketing budgets, and frustrated by pirated torrents, Pat made a movie then made it really hard for people to see it.

Quote:
The House on the Witchpit is the eighth movie that I've had a significant involvement in, and all of the others have followed the same pattern. A period of hype during post-production, the usual blitz of trying to get as many eyes as possible to see the trailers/stills and then the initial release at cinema or DVD/VOD. This release is followed by a total lack of control. The flick comes out in whatever territories have been sold. It gets pirated, hits the torrents and streaming sites, (often killing the chances of selling any more territories than the initial ones) and within a couple of months it's all over. Done. Old news.

Witchpit premiered in January 2016 at Southend-on-Sea Horror Fest. At the conculsion of the screening Pat destroyed the master onstage.

He's recut, reedited, and I believe somewhat even reshot the movie and is releasing it for one night only (tonight!) on Amazon Prime and Vimeo before this version is wiped, never to be seen again.

Quote:
The House on the Witchpit is a horror movie about horror movies. It is a 3am panic attack. One version was screened for a single showing in January 2016, and then the master copy was destroyed onstage. This new version will not be available for long. Details are scarce. Approach with caution.

No trailer. No synopsis. A bizarre puzzle box of a film. One night only.

I know what I'm doing tonight . . .

What a sweet little game of back and forth for two players. Maybe one of the more strategic games I've played. It's labeled an abstract, but you can play where you draw tiles randomly, or lay them all out and choose what to play. Me and Buddy played one game each way and I was thrilled to win both times as he usually kills me in these type of games.

Another slept on Knizia gem in my mind.

Last week's gaming:

 8   Button Men x2
 7   Kingdoms NEW!
 8   Eight-Minute Empire
 9   The Rose King
 8   Hey, That's My Fish!

Taught Kingdoms and Eight Minute Empire to Boo. She *loved* the former, even before she pulled off an 80 point column in the final era to cement her win. EME was more subtle - not sure she really grasped it.

I've fallen back in love with Rosenkonig - I hope that emotion is coming through in our Yucata games.

-----

Just bought tickets to The Last Jedi on opening night, and am busy actively avoiding spoilers trailers. Also picked up tickets for Johanna's production of The Laramie Project later this month - tickets for opening sold out in 2 hours, and I think the entire run is sold out on day one.

This weekend was New York Comic Con. Thursday was dreamy, with small crowds since ReedPop (who run the con) screwed up and overly limited Pro passes. Hope they learned their lesson. It meant that it wasn't crowded, and it was possible to spend some real time with the writers and artists I had come to see. Terry Moore (Strangers In Paradise, Echo, Rachel Rising, Motor Girl) was delightful as usual, and when I finally chose a stunning original Rachel Rising page to purchase to grace my wall, he commented that I had stared long and hard at the same page last year before settling on an Echo page.

Terry Moore knows who I am.

Spent time with Luke Ross, too, who was one of the first artist's whose work I tracked down, back in the CrossGen days. He seemed genuinely touched at my gratutude for his work, and he added a quick sketch to the artbook I bought from him. Similar experiences with Dan Parent (Archie), and Jeremy Haun (who was the artist of the only book I ever got a letter published in, Paradigm). Spent almost the whole day in Artist Alley, with the exception of my traditional first stop at the CBLDF both (see my microbadges) to renew my membership, and a swing by the 2000AD booth to pick up the HERO Initiative fundraising sketchbook in memory of Steve Dillon.

Friday was all about browsing the stacks. I no longer have a list of back issues that I am tracking down, having finally filled in all of my gaps a few years back, but there are always trades which I passed on first time round, and weird and wonderful indies to explore. Ran into an old friend from my days as a comic book clerk (we are follow survivors) who is now a published artist and I ended up grabbing all four of the trades available to date.

Friday was also the day of the one panel I was attending this year (since they moved the Vertigo panel to Saturday, and having booted Karen Berger and Shelly Bond, Vertigo really isn't Vertigo any more. The aforementioned Shelly Bond has landed on her feet at IDW where they have allowed her to launch the first creator owned shared universe - Black Crown. Set on a street bearing a striking resemblance to a 90s-era Saint Marks Place in New York's East Village, Shelly is pairing industry veterans with up an comers in self contained books which all take place on one street - Canon Street.

Have I mentioned lately that I love meta?

The first book - Kid Lobotomy - is written by the first writer I ever discovered back in the early 90s, Peter Miligan and drawn by Tess Fowler. After the fascinating and fun panel, these two and Shelly headed off to St Marks Comics for a signing.

Did I mention that it was St Marks Comics I worked at for the first four years I was back in New York.

I got to hang out with the creators and catch up with a bunch of other survivors who descended on the store. I got to talk identity and madness with Peter, and tell him how he had sparked my interest in comics and led me on a path that led to that moment. I got to reminisce with Shelly about the years she was just a customer of mine, and debate whether the bar on Canon Street was more like Bull McCabes or Grassroots.

And I got to watch Tess Fowler sketch a stunning headshot of Kid himself. Tess was delightful, and when I mentioned that I would be bringing my daughter to con on Sunday, she insisted that I bring her by for a sketch.

Sunday, I brought Boo. This was her fourth year at NYCC, and the first where she may have loved it as much as me. She asked Tess all kinds of questions about art, and got a lesson in how to draw eyes, before posing for a sketch. It was amazing:

Later on, she was also ponified (image to follow . . .)

She chatted with artists and writers, picked out a bunch of 50 cent comics like a pro, and was generally far more well behaved than any 8-year-old should be in a sea of 50,000 people. It was an astounding bonding moment, or rather a 5 our series of them.

Boo rocks.
