My favourite new game this month is a title only 13 years old! Jenseits von Theben is the ancestor of the modern Thebes (a game I also enjoy.) On the other hand, there are only a few differences from the newer version (in gameplay; the presentation of the new one is quite a bit fancier.) So perhaps it shouldn't count.

Next favourite would be 1825 Unit 3. And, again, it's an element of a system that I've played before (1825) - and though significantly different in feel than 1825 Unit 1 (the variant trains and smaller companies help there, not to mention the limit to only 2 players) it possibly doesn't count either.

Which leads me to The Colonists. A gigantic, sprawling, multiplayer solitaire optimization exercise. That I shouldn't like at all. But, strangely perhaps, I do. It's the infinitesimally-more-adult version of the sitting around playing with Lego trying to construct something cool thing that I might have done back when my age was measured in single digits: and sure, one could (the game does!) assign a winner to the exercise - but the game seems far more about the building. So why the other players? In each of my three games, I've learned a lot about things I could do by watching the others: my settlement (or whatever it is that I'm making) is better because of drafting the others' good ideas (and avoiding their bad ideas!)

I've also played 3 sind eine zu viel!, Mint Works, and Girl's Time; but while they might have been momentarily amusing (and I'd likely play again, were my participation wanted) they're not things I'm vying to repeat.

On the expansion front, I did see Panic Lab: Shower in play, too: and it's quite cute. Even if the shower card has rounded edges, and the rest of my set has square ones!

The ancestor of the modern Thebes. Much simpler in presentation (and likely there a bit weaker on the usability front, too.) But, equally, containing a few cool decisions that the newer one omits (and possibly in search of that same usability.) Really enjoyed it.

Scorecard for the Week/Month/Year as of 18Feb2017:

7/18/66 plays of 5/12/36 total games, with 0/1/2 expansions employed.
Plays with 8/12/19 distinct opponents.

0/1/8 games acquired (plus 3/3/4 expansions.) - Navegador: Privilege Cards, Concordia: 8 Forum Cards mini-expansion and Pax Renaissance: BGG Promo Pack.
0/1/12 games sold/traded (plus 0/0/2 expansions.)
1/2/7 games ordered (plus 0/3/4 expansions.) - Lignum (from BGG marketplace.)
Orders for 3 games and 0 expansions still outstanding.

With kids:
1x _8_ Jenseits von Theben [New!] - Daughter #1 had (finally!) caught up with her homework load, so she joined son #2 and I for this one. We had a rather mixed response to it: some enthusiasm for the (rather cool) exhibition constraints in this version; a resounding meh for the changes (relative to the newer version) in shovels and assistants; and a bit of wistful longing for the presentation and usability of the new version. Pulling tokens out of bags is a lot faster than shuffling a tiny deck of cards. The kids thought that they'd happily play either version, though they thought this one was distinctly less pretty than the version to which they were first exposed.

With the Monday lunch group:
1x _7_ Bongo! - Inspired by last week's Panic Lab, a little player-summoning silliness. It worked fine in that context. (And, for my part, I think I prefer this one; though I'm not sure about the others' views.)

1x _7⅔_ - Really glad to see this back in action: is one of my favourite 5-player trick-takers. It had been a bit too long, I think, out of our rotation: a few of my colleages were a bit more timid about their bidding than I think their hands warranted. But it was still entertaining.

3x _6⅓_ Mint Works [New!] - This one was Friday afternoon, rather than Monday lunch; and with only three of us. (We thought that given the holiday Monday we might try to get a game in a bit early.) It was amusing, and short, and likely more volatile than it really wanted to be.

Our first two games appeared to go to the player that acquired the first-turn Stripmine. And the third game wasn't terribly different: while we'd taken the Stripmine out (as a test), the game again went to the first player to difference themselves significantly from the others in income. (And, sadly, the game assigns those opportunities quite randomly - without any lookahead potential, nor any possible mitigation or blocking.)

I expect it's not aiming for any particular balance. It's short enough that one can be quite content to just play again. It's just a bit silly to play for ten minutes when the victor was clear in the first minute: and that could have been improved (with likely more development than the game deserves), I think.

With the Wednesday night gang:
1x _7⅓_ The Colonists - In a fit of insanity, we played 13 years (until just after midnight) then checkpointed the game. Perhaps we'll finish it some other time; perhaps we'll restart at Era 2 (and again play a dozen-ish years); perhaps the guys (on reflection) are done with it.

For my part, I'm perplexed that I enjoyed it so much. It's very very much a multiplayer solitaire thing. Yet it's weirdly collaborative: I can watch another's plans and adopt their best ideas with limited backpressure: so I experience it as a warped kind of coöpetition.

Owned-and-unplayed: 0 (+0/-1) - Jenseits von Theben was played.
Owned-and-played-once: 93 (+1/-1) - Jenseits von Theben was played once; The Colonists was played again.

Outlook for the week: Off for a work offsite in the hills. I expect to make bread (and that's real bread, not パンパカパン Panpakapan 'Let's Make Bread!!') and play a bunch of games. Unlikely that The Colonists will make an appearance, though; multiple shorter games are likely the rule.

This could be called a parts copies. A couple cards might be missing, and the box is falling apart. Also, I cannot in good conscious recommend that anyone play the game. That being said, it probably could be played with the copy.

Quiet enthusiastic about this one: I'd probably play it in preference to Thebes - and I like Thebes. Oh, sure; the presentation of the new one is lovely. But I think several of the decisions here are quite cool.

Feb 13, 2006

This episode became my white whale. It was a struggle to get it recorded, edited, partially scrapped & re-recorded, and finally posted. Towards the end, I have to admit that I just gave up a little bit, posting it even though I'm still not happy with the audio quality. Also, I think I ramble on just a bit too much, though at least the second take was better than the first! The audio issues come from using a slightly different setup, one I'd hoped would give me a little more flexibility in where & when I record the shows (i.e., it's more portable). It worked ok, and could probably be improved further, though I'm not sure it solves my fundamental problem of not enough time to spend on the podcast!

Ah well, at least it's posted now. Maybe I can turn around a (shorter) 52nd show quicker, getting in some more audio feedback that I couldn't squeeze into this episode.

In the news section I mention how you need to read this blog/website to learn how to join me for games of Torres, Alhambra, Fearsome Floors, and perhaps Droles des Zebres on the play-by-web site Boîte à Jeux. That site doesn't use passwords, but I can still restrict a game to BGTGers by inviting specific users to join my games. To do that, I need your BAJ usernames. Email them to me, or--better yet--post them in comments to this message.

Towards the end of the feedback section I ask the audience for some idea for game accessories that make good gifts for the gamer who has everything. Got some ideas?

-Mark

P.S. Samarit, I later figured out that Togo is in west Africa, not the South Pacific. Sorry about that! At least I know where Bavaria is . . .

OK, so this represents two games. I prefer the 2nd edition (shown), but the Queen edition is easier to set up so it gets player more.

"Wow, this was a surprise. It's week mechanic where one person may be doing fewer turns because they are doing longer things, while another person is doing more things on a shorter time frame is very fun. Not sure the exhibits add a lot to it. Rating with only one play. May go higher.

(Thoia thinks I should point out that it is well worth the $27.84 I paid for it on eBay)

[2nd edition]"

Queen edition - "I very much enjoy this game. Yes, it has a lot of luck, but that's part of the theme. Plus, you can mitigate that luck to some extent. Or just go with it."

While there aren't any X or Y games which have managed to stick in my collection, there are a lot (well, 5) games starting with a J:

Jenseits von Theben - the game that became Thebes - if my favorite of the lot, and one of my very favorite games of all.

Jambo has been, for some time now, my favorite two-player game. I avoided it for a while because of some of the comparisons made, but once I tried it I was hooked.

Jati is an abstract I enjoy - my review can be found here.

Jericho is an enjoyable little filler - though the cards in the Uberplay edition are almost unplayable; the original Abacus edition doesn't have this problem. Best with 2-3.

Julchen und die Monster is, if not an inspiration for Love Letter, in the same family - and rather more interesting, at least for me.

He's looking real sharp in his 1940's fedora. He's got nerves of steel, an iron will, and several other metal-themed attributes. His fur is water tight and he's always up for a fight.

He's a semi-aquatic egg-laying mammal of action. He's a furry little flat-foot who'll never flinch from a fray. He's got more than just mad skills, he's got a beaver tail and a bill.
mbmbmbmbmb
Another easy-peasy name. There's no way you could even possibly mispronounce this. You probably know exactly how to pronounce it. Probably.
