Rating

Ingenious with flowers. Rare Kosmos 2 player tile placement and area control game that can be peaceful or cutthroat. Make the largest flower beds of each type of flower as you can on only your side of the board and extending into the central zone. 3 times during the game you can use your tiles as weeds to plant in your opponents garden usually trying to cut them off from expansion. Fight over dominance over the central strip is inevitable at some point. Feels similar to Ingenious but different enough that we are keeping both. The small board and tiny tiles are adorable and portable. Loved it from the first time we played it, still love it today.

Nothing particularly stood out this month; I've started SeaFall, but that needs a full play-through before passing judgement. Flowerpoweris probably the first among equals, as it's the only one without drawbacks.

LIKED

Flowerpower - 2 Plays - Initial Rating 7

Flower-themed abstract in the Kosmos 2P line from 2001, which was always mentioned alongside Lost Cities as the perfect spouse game: it's taken a while for me to get a copy, but I can report after all that time, that it is, indeed, another great game to play with a non-gaming SO. The rules explanation takes 2-3 minutes and, while I played all strategic and "I'll build in the middle early to save my space" and "I'll block her with weeds" and "Getting a 10 will put me well clear on points", my wife happily scored her 3s and 6s and won by a point. There's actually some depth to this little game, strategy and tactics, too; and none of it daunting. Digging it.

Quantum - 5 Plays - Initial Rating 7

Dice manipulation game a la Alien Frontiers, but with a dudes-on-a-map feel to it rather than area control: humanoid races contesting a galactic sector to control planets by constructing Quantum cubes. If it were just a footrace to place the cubes, this would be fairly monotonous and mostly decided by who rolled most usefully at the beginning. However, you *must* interact, which means there is a lot of conflict, destroying of ships and occasional gnashing of teeth. One player got into a position he could barely do anything but fight; but another escaped from a terrible start to a quiet sector of the map and sneaked up on those that were now stopping each other from winning. Good mechanics.

Blood Bowl Team Manager - 1 Play - Initial Rating 7

Somewhat put off by the bloody-future-sport theme, I never really bothered looking into this: now - with FFG and Games Workshop all split up - I wish I had, as it'd most likely be an overly expensive purchase; which is a shame, because I could see this working really well with a couple of colleagues. I played a three player game which - once the obvious moves of ensuring the best return from the highlights games were done with - became more tactical with each card played. Reminded me of Baseball Highlights 2045 (a good thing); my only worry would be that the card plays were a bit obvious. Bloody good fun, otherwise.

Mechs vs Minions - 1 play - Initial Rating 7

Happy to see what all the fuss was about, and still really amazed by the quantity and quality of stuff you get for your comparatively-little money. Wouldn't make much difference if the game wasn't all that, but the game itself is fine: mechanically sound, Roborally-lite programming, with cool power-ups and thematic damage system. We played Scenario 2 with three novices and only lost to one measly Minion making it through to the school: we were, though, having enough of a good time to want to finish repairing the Inhibitor, which says a lot. The stand-out downside to me is that the game looks like it would become exceptionally repetitive: only four scenarios, and once the cards are 'unlocked', where would the incentive be to continue? Interesting to see if Riot support their product. Good mechs.

Burke's Gambit - 5 Plays - Initial Rating 6.5

Hearing that this hidden-role game (with two discrete pieces of hidden information) played well at 4/6/8 players, I thought of how I much prefer Secret Hitler at 7/9 players, and hoped this would slot in nicely. We played five games off the bat, probably too many, and had two new players for the last two plays. The first two games (8 players, Blue victories) were what the game should be: deception, trust issues, where's the Parasite? Oh no, they moved the Parasite!? Can we figure it out before we get to Earth? and so on, and they engendered much mirth and engagement around the table. The third and fourth games (8/7 players) fell flat as a pancake, with Engine rolls ending the game before some players got a second turn: these were obvious Red wins. The fifth game (7 players) was back to where it should be, although we ended with a single Red rolling forlornly as all hope had gone. I liked it, but it's more BANG! The Space Game than a rival to Secret Hitler.

NOT SO MUCH

Ice Flow - 1 Play - Initial Rating 5.5

Small form factor tile game which was fine, although we found a misplayed rule toward the end which may have made a difference. Sticking with the pack is a must, otherwise you'll drift off out of the game. Ice enough.

I was in the mood for some peaceful, flowery tile-laying today, so I played this game from the Kosmos two-player series. As the name of the family suggests, it is primarily a two-player game, but the rules also include a solo variant. 1 or 2 players, you draw a tile from the bag and try to place it in a way that allows you to make large patches of the same flower type. The larger a patch, the more points you score.

In the two-player game, you have only one half of the board at your disposal, and there is a central area that both players compete for.
In the solo game, the whole board is yours, which makes for a very relaxing but also slightly boring experience. Feels more like building a jigsaw puzzle than playing a game. And while I somewhat enjoyed playing the game, scoring wasn't fun at all.

For each patch of connected (via the sides, not corners) squares, you multiply the number of flowers with itself, and then you add up your points for all the patches. A 3-flower patch scores you 3x3=9 points, a 6x6 is worth 36 etc.

I think scoring took me longer than playing:
(Sorry about the glare but I think you get the idea of why this might be a bit tedious.)

Final verdict: I like this one as a two-player game but probably won't play it solo again.

Or maybe I'll try using the scoring from the two-player game, which awards 0 points for patches with 0-2 flowers of the same type, 1 point for size 3-5, 2 points for size 6-9, and 4 points for size 10 and above. Which is a lot simpler than having to count every single 1-flower patch.

The larger a patch, the more points you score. There are two tiles for each flower combination, and one double flower for each type (unless you have the misprinted edition that is missing a double carnation and has three of one of the combinations instead, like I do).

In the two-player game, you have only one half of the board at your disposal, and there is a central area that both players compete for.

(Sorry about the glare but I think you get the idea of why this might be a bit tedious.)

Final verdict: I like this one as a light two-player game but probably won't play it solo again.

Still, there are better tile-laying games out there and I think this has been out of print for a while and might be hard to get.
It also bothers me that the board is larger than dictated by the tiles, so I can never get them to line up neat and orderly. angry

About Me - I kiss am a female gaming addict...erm, enthusiast who is enabled supported in all things gaming by husband dearest cool
About my ratings/recommendations -
thumbsup (YES) (yes, but with reservations) (unsure) thumbsdown (NO)

the date - 1 September

the game - A light, fun tile placement game with some area control that I think of as “Ingenious with flowers”. Draw a tile, place the tile, and attempt to get large patches of flowers and score points according to the score table. There is a neutral strip in the middle of the board where flowers can count for you if the majority ends up on your side of the garden, and 3x per game you may use one of your tiles turned face down as a weed to plant in your opponent's garden. Right up there with Ingenious: Travel Edition and Qwirkle in my book. Winner cool 20 v 16

the good - 2 player only, easy to learn and play, simple rules with some depth, quick playing, lovely artwork.

the bad & the ugly - Out of print so it's rare and hard to find, luck dependent on the tile draw.

recommended for 2? thumbsup

Bah! Curse you all and these obscure games!!! I think I have now been been bitten by the bug shake

I have recently picked up a copy of DruidenWalzer and now I am on the hunt for this one. I have checked all of my usual sources - the European eBays, Marktplaats etc. If anybody happens to spot a reasonably priced copy for about 15 euro or so can you let me know? Apparently they have been bought in bargain bins at Essen for about 5-10 but I have no plans to get to Essen anytime soon unfortunately.

New to Me

The Jungle Book (in 3-D)
=

I've heard a lot of raving about this adaptation of the classic Disney cartoon and I will say it is definitely a well-made movie that deserves the attention it has received. The CGI is top-notch, considering the fact that no real animals appeared in the entire film. There are still moments where you can see the disconnect between the live-action element and the animation, but otherwise it's visually magnificent. My favorite part was how they made the animals talk in a way that felt authentic, when in some films it can look like a lame JibJab effect. The only downside to the look of the film was the 3-D which I found blurry and unnecessary. The vocal talent is great, but when you see that cast list you kind of expect them to knock it out of the park. I thought Neel Sethi, the child playing Mowgli, was just fine particularly because he had the challenge of acting against nothing. The inclusion of Bare Necessities seemed right because Baloo was that kind of comic relief character, and it made sense that they might literally be singing in that moment. However when Christopher Walken breaks into I Want to be Like You it was a struggle for me to avoid laughing. It was so awkward and out of place. Perhaps if they had been singing all the songs all the way through the movie it would have worked, but preceding that scene with only one other musical number made it kind of terrible. Most of the stuff I've complained about here is pretty minor, and it didn't ruin the movie for me, but there is one little thing that resulted in me telling my friends "It was OK" instead of raving "It was great!" The fact of the matter is, I just don't care all that much for the story of The Jungle Book. Mowgli's journey through the jungle to find acceptance doesn't interest me. I think fans of the original film or the book absolutely must see this film, but if you didn't care in the past I can't see this movie changing your mind.

GO ROCKIES!!!!!

This is a really fun two player game that for whatever reason has not been reprinted.

The person I bought it from has 2 wood disks instead of the cardboard player markers and he also wrote on the board for scoring. If you look close, you'll see a small "5", "10", "15" etc... around the board for scoring as the only way to keep track is counting the flowers. If you look at the bottom-right of the board you can see where he wrote "20". Could be a deal breaker for some so I wanted to be clear about it. You can see the wood disks and the board here:
