 7   YINSH
 7   LYNGK NEW!
7   DVONN x2 All of these GIPF Project games are ok, none tell me that I have to play over and over.
N/A   Unpublished Prototype x3 These were all Alan D. Ernstein designs some farther along than others. He was a co-demo-er at Origins and we shared some beers as well as some games!
10   Race for the Galaxy x6 All at the bar, some with first two, the rest with first three expansions.
7   Orient Express x2 NEW! This is similar to 20th Century Limited and I like all of the changes. The speed game with three was more fun than the five player one.
6.5   Oktoberfest NEW! The subject matter is the best part, but I'll give it at least one more try.
7   Imperial 2030 NEW! We only got a few turns of this in.
6.5   Century: Spice Road NEW! I like it better than Splendor, but don't need to own it.
9   Terraforming Mars A four player from 12-2 AM. Hanson had his third loss (of 20-some games). One new player and the scores were pretty tight.
8   Stroop Fun fast-action game that I enjoy despite my slowness.
 10   Mottainai x2
7   Bohnanza: The Duel NEW! Nice two player variant, we played first half or so with an incorrect rule and it's much better when the gift can come from newly flipped cards, rather than hand.
N/A   Unreal Estate NEW! The art is really nice on this one. I'll try it a couple more times. It has some cute ideas and tweaks on drafting, but it didn't wow me.
 7   Ciúb Fun dice game.

Divestitures
Argent: Mancers of the University and Domaine both through virtual flea market.
Acquisitions
Temporum, Temporum: Alternate Realities, Bohnanza: The Duel LYNGK and Oktoberfest in the demo draft.
Dominion: Update Pack, Dominion: Intrigue Update Pack, Grand Austria Hotel*, Fight for Olympus*, Test of Fire: Bull Run 1861**, Clash of Wills: Shiloh 1862**

* 50% off with Mayfair Ribbonhunt
** Martin Wallace selloff for $8 each

has won a total of 25.30 GG. Congratulations!

EDIT: Since the response so far has been pretty light, I will take inspiration from mdkiria's post below and expand the qualifications: if you don't own an applicable microbadge, then add a comment describing your relationship with Origins and thumb away!

(Yes, "I attended once" is technically a relationship, so go for it!)

Not for the game shown!

Back when I added this item, I offered a 25GG bonus that was winnable only by one very specific person. In hindsight that seems rather unfair as literally only one person can possibly win it.

So, here's that 25 GG!

But, I still want to make the winner "work" for it. I notice some people like to add extra hoops to jump through in order to win... So, let me plug my favorite game convention.

To qualify, you must be a 2016 supporter and you must own or show a microbadge related to the Origins Game Fair.

There seem to be two such microbadges available:  Origins attendee and  Origins attendee . But if you have some other badge and can convince me it's related to Origins, I can be persuaded.

Oh, I will add any tips on both of my items to this prize as well.

This looked a lot more interesting at first glance. I thought it might be about evolution, or maybe a metaphysical/mystical type of game. Closer inspection revealed it was just another trivia game. Still, with no die or spinner I thought it might be a notch better than most games of its ilk.

At Origins 2016 on Saturday. The con has definitely roused itself from its doldrums of a few years ago. The energy was huge, and it seems it's once again the con to attend if you want to play games most of all, yet still enjoy a big con feel.

Demoed:

Love the IP, but wasn't sold on the game.

The guy demoing this felt overwhelmed by it, which means we did too.

Not bad, but had that dreaded "playing a spreadsheet" feeling, even with the building bits.

While were early enough into the hall Saturday to snag one of the 50 they had for sale that day, I knew nothing about the gameplay and only that it was an SdJ nominee. The blonde sales gal was still kind enough to give us a demo later, and when she saw the smile on my face as she explained the game, she offered to sell me her copy. But the lackluster comments on BGG, my son's meh response, and the fact that Coolstuff was taking preorders for $10 less than the Origins special Kosmos was offering--well, it's not a must-buy for me anyway.

When the Eagle Gryphon salesguy heard I had everything made for Francis Drake, he almost gave himself a hernia trying to get me to buy this. I'd never get it to the table, and a few people I game with already own it.

Or NOT demoed:

Would have loved to have seen this demoed, but TMG didn't even have one left to demo. For shame! And Lance Myxter never seemed to be there either. Double for shame!!

Played a full game:

My son really liked this game. Ended up buying. So far, he's up 5-1.

On the other hand, I destroyed him in this.

Just OK.

About as much fun as a barrel of monkeys.

Or as I call it, Ca$h 'n' Gun$ II: They Stole Our Guns

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but if I am, it wasn't all that memorable.

Now, I have to think about the really important things that are going in the suitcase for Origins. Namely the games. Here's what's on my To Play list:

Gear VR with Keep Talking and No One Explodes - Just bought this on the Gear and played a little through the tutorial this evening. Manual is printed out and ready for next week. This one looks like a hell of a lot of fun, especially with a few people on the rules duty. Plan on several games of this one.

Deep Sea Adventure - A game almost made for travel.

Escape - I can condense this one into a fraction of it's box size. Actually makes a great travel game.

Chronicle - Fun trick taking game with some interesting twists.

Atlantis - Another game that I can fit into a medium zip lock baggie. Plays quick, too.

Burgle Bros - Need to get this back to

Why did we even begin at all? For that we need to go back to an even earlier date, April 2008, when my partner and I bought a house which was literally around the corner of my friend's. We'd already decided long before remodelling was complete that we would begin gaming in a regular fashion: this opportunity was just too good to pass up. We decided on a single evening per week-routine, but we weren't too strict with this schedule, allowing for holidays, work-related stuff, gaming events elsewhere (notably Spiel) and more.

The first order of business was to give the games on the chopping block one final chance to redeem themselves. Alas, most games still performed abysmally. There was one notable exception, though: Ys. It turned out that, charitably, Ys' variant rules for 2 suck monkey balls. Up till that point I had never played the game nor dared put it out for more than 2; the extra player proved to be just what the game needed. I still own the game thanks to this insight, but I have never again played it at 2.

After all those sorry excuses for games were done with, we turned our attention to the weak games in our collections. This may sound a bit masochistic as most people would immediately begin with the best games. But we reasoned that we'd spent money on those titles just the same, thus considered them at least good enough to end up in our collections; and that by putting out the best, those weak titles would begin the process of even gathering more dust until they too were sold off. Working our way through this considerably larger whole proved to be a tough challenge in its own right: the weak games really were weak, and many ended up on the chopping block all the same. To keep our motivation up we alternated with freshly purchased games, and a small project I'd launched on the side: Diner Jouant, in which I'd invite people over to my place to explain a game I'd like to play in exchange for a quality dinner. (Diner Jouant still exists but noone comes by anymore in this 'function', so I do not expect to complete the list of want to plays in the foreseeable future. Yes, the offer is open to international visitors too. Regrettably I have no place for you to spend the night, but it's a 10 minute-walk to this great hotel, and in another 10 minutes by train, you'll arrive in the heart of Amsterdam.)

We have now arrived in the autumn of 2011, 5 October to be precise. My partner was beginning to get really fed up with the string of low-quality games which had been hitting the table of late, and heaved a long sigh of relief when I announced that we'd finished playing all the weak stuff after we'd completed a silly card game. But what next? Good games, finally? Or something else? I left the table for a toilet break, and when I returned, my partner and friend told me that we'd play no favourites, and go through our collection from A to Z. I looked up my collection here, and dug up After the Flood. Our Alphabet Challenge had begun.

Home from Origins, and very glad to be back - it was great fun, but cons can be tiring, and every time I saw a toddler I missed my wife + son a bit more. This is the first time I've roomed with 2 other folks at a con, and it changed the dynamics even more than going with one other person.

Games with BGG entries, with very short impressions:
* Argent: The Consortium (with expansion) (x2) - finally resolved my tempo issues with this.
* Castles of Mad King Ludwig (new!) - two days post-play, was increasingly dissatisfied with the mechanics but increasingly enamored of the game. Pre-ordered.
* Cavum (thanks, Jimmy!) - Good, but prolonged by AP. Plan on gentle game timer in future.
* Fairy Tale
* Fealty - no-chance variant with experienced players.
* Finca (new!) - neat movement and pleasantly convoluted collection incentives.
* Going, going, GONE! (new!) - silly little auctions + real-time + good scoring system = much more fun than I'd thought
* Hanabi - "I'm sure we'll get 25." HAHAHAHA.
* Innovation (x2) - once straight, once with Figures in the Sand (which I'm liking a lot).
* Krosmaster: Arena (demo) (new!) - Bryan's descriptions prompted me to try this out.
* Merkator (new!) - maybe my favorite Rosenberg since Agricola? Some concern about static card synergies, and interactivity rather indirect.
* Monopoly Deal (new!) (x2) - low-thought 10-minute filler - better than expected from the name.
* Shadowrun: Crossfire (new!) - quick and brutal co-op, some fun, failed immersion.
* Smash Up (new!) - ...yup.
* Subdivision (new!) - interestingly puzzley, but low interaction, and scoring was disappointingly highway-dominated.
* The Duke (x4) - great for waiting in the airport.

Games without BGG entries:
* Alchemists (new!) - An upcoming Essen release by CGE, discussed by Ben here. Enjoyed, despite one player hitting heavy AP lock on deep deductions halfway through the game (I'd have minded less if I'd had the data to spend time doing deep deductions of my own, but he'd been a bit luckier with his experimental data). Would enjoy playing again.
* Cataclysm (working title) (x4) (new!) - A prototype social-deduction game by Trey Chambers. Still in a fair amount of flux; started out the weekend like Avalon with heavy modifications, ended much more its own thing. Many of the resources that are unlimited in Resistance/Avalon are limited in this, which created both very interesting dynamics and thorny design problems.
* Commedia (x2) (new!) - A 2-player microgame under dev by Level 99 Games; probably my favorite microgame yet. (I know folks who do Commedia, so I may be biased. But on first blush, the game's quite good.)
* Paradox (new!) - "You invented time travel and broke the Universe. Now you're trying to fix it." Upcoming Kickstarter by Split Second Games. (their page) You draft chunks of spacetime (a given world's Past, Present, or Future) that you must then fix in a limited number of turns. But whenever someone fixes something, the rupture in space-time shifts, unmaking whatever world it hits; to score your work on a world, it has to exist at end-of-game. Resources to do all this come from an individual puzzle-grid reminiscent of many "make rows" computer games; rows of 4 self-destruct to grant 1 resource, rows of 5 grant 2, you get two (constrained) swaps per turn. Quite enjoyed, especially having seen the things you add once you're comfortable with the teaching game.
* Spirit Island (x2) - two actual games with experienced players, and some dev work re-creating Ocean's Hungry Grasp, a spirit that brings the oceans off the island into play.
* ...and two prototypes I don't know the (working) names of. One was one of the more enjoyable memory games I've played, but is in so much flux it's probably utterly different already. The other was early-stage prototype by Brian Suhre (designer of Paradox, above) in the middle of feeling out a theme that meshed well with the mechanics.

Roughly half of my 33 plays were prototypes or games not yet released.

Not everything was playing games; I was also running some demos of Spirit Island, talking to a publisher about Response Lab Alpha[1], catching up with random con friends, birthday shopping in the dealer's hall... and eating astonishingly good Jeni's ice cream[2] every single day. OM NOM NOM.

Yeah. Very fun con. But no wonder I'm tired. And I should probably go do immense amounts of exercise to work off all that ice cream.

[1] = Another game I've got out there - it's been with a publisher since BGG.CON last November.

[2] = ...uh-oh. They offer flat-rate shipping of ice cream. And we have a chest freezer. This is AWESOME. And DANGEROUS.

With a visit to this Columbus Ohio con on my schedule - I don't think I'll be able to go the entire month with no new to me games, but you never know.

"demos" don't count, do they?

I am in.

UPDATE: I am no longer "master of my domain". I feel like Kramer on Seinfled's episode titled "The Contest." I played Merkator at the FLGS on 6/1, but we did play it twice.

Simple trivia game about the origins of words, clichés, etc. so the questions and answers are really interesting.

Some scuffing on the corners.

Wednesday

Summary: Registration, silent auction drop-off and 1 great game play.

I arrived at the convention on Wednesday at 4 to pick up my registration badge and drop off 24 items for inclusion in the silent auction before my first scheduled game at 6:30. There were no lines at registration and no line at the auction, so I had all my logistics completed by 5 and had 90 minutes to just wander around. Things were still getting set up and the halls were sparse.

In 2011, Origins felt a little desperate. I didn't get that feeling this year. Most people were upbeat and the energy at the show was high. Despite the repeated issue with not being able to play many games (someone, please encourage publishers to have a few spots off the dealer floor where people can get a lesson or two on playing some of the newer games), I thought Origins was good this year, and I did not get the feeling that it was a con on its way down. If anything, I was really wishing I could ditch the kiddies and spend a couple days playing games here. Maybe next year.

Although I didn't get a ton of gaming done on my second day and I probably spent more on food and games than I should have, Origins was a big success.

I came home with ten new games, only one of which I've played before. And four of them were free.

I got to play six games that I have been reading about and was considering buying and can make future purchases much more confidently.

I got to show my prototype off to two more people and got to play a new game that will hopefully get published.

Everyone I interacted with was friendly and Jim and John were hugely helpful as I try to get my game published.

Best of all, I introduced my wife to the world of boardgame conventions. Now when I make her watch The Guild with me or read a Dork Tower comic some of the jokes will make more sense to her.

So exactly how did a young boy growing up in Tennessee become an Oakland Raiders fan? Well, it all started in 2nd grade. My father didn't watch football nor was I remotely familiar with it. One fateful day at school, the class was on its way to the restroom. As the Raiders were getting ready to play the Eagles in Super Bowl XV, one of my fellow classmates asked me who I was rooting for. I said the Raiders since they had a better name. The Raiders went on to win the Super Bowl and the next year I started watching a little bit of football on television. When Marcus Allen came to town I developed my first childhood sports hero and by the time they won the Super Bowl again in 1983 against the Redskins, I was a full fledged fan of the Silver and Black. However, during these formative years, I really had no idea of who Al Davis was.
