Another one from last year, but much more so than Edo, something that I'd been on the look out for because the theme is something I'm particularly interested in. Haven't found a window to take it to the club yet. Very much the kind of thing that I want to get around to because of the power of the list.

I read the rules but would need to reread them before thinking about play.

Content Generation For A New Generation

Another LoBsterCon, another bunch of new-to-me games, most of which I've played once in the past three days while sleep-deprived. So my opinions are as unformed and bizarre as ever, but this time for a specific reason. It also has to be said that as I own none of these I find myself wondering if I'll ever play any of them again. Well, let's try to blitz through these a bit then:

Two Rooms and a Boom (3 plays) - Social deduction or something, not my cup of tea but a passable way to promote mingling of large numbers of people late at night, even if I spent two of the three games not saying anything.

Ave Roma (1 play) - The parts don't seem to gel all that well in this and there are rather a lot of them. A bit overwhelming to no massive purpose and I'm not certain it's worth it.

Unfair (1 play) - Diverting quirkily-themed fun once but I fear that played again and/or in a more take-that manner I would find it a little tedious.

When I Dream (1 play) - A sort of Dixit/Codenames thing; I think for its niche I prefer Codenames a fair bit more, the time pressure and competitive complexity of this one might make it just a bit less clever and a bit more trouble than it is actually worth.

Elemental Ascent [not yet published] (1 play) - A little too dice game for me but mechanically quite neat and the parts seem to gel well.

Vast: The Crystal Caverns (1 play) - Really interesting idea (a rock-paper-scissors triangle of competing Knight/Dragon/Goblins, with a fourth player attempting to prevent any other player from winning by equalising their strengths for as long as possible) but it didn't seem executed the best it could be - willing to put this down to player skill but not really willing to put the effort in to test that.

Splash! (3 plays) - Dexterity game with small pieces. Conceptually neat but I think I prefer Junk Art, for which see below. I may not be terribly enthusiastic but let's be honest I'll never actually turn this down will I.

Pictomania (1 play) - A perfunctory round of this - the incentive structure seems pretty well-designed to encourage you to draw recognisably but quickly, and while it's not a superlative party game (I think I might regard 'having any components' as a fundamental flaw for party games...) I don't see myself turning it down if the occasion arises again.

Timeline: Music & Cinema (1 play) - Nothing so much wrong with Another Timeline Game but no points for originality, of course. I didn't, as I feared, know all of the answers immediately to within the year, but I fear that played with anyone who wasn't a massive sad nerd this would not really be fun for either of us.

Fabled Fruit (2 plays) - 2 plays is certainly not enough to grasp the legacy aspect of it and the way the action deck develops, so this is a very unformed opinion, but it seemed reasonably sound and I'd be up for a proper campaign of it.

Kogworks (5 plays) - Two-player abstract interlude! It's a nice gimmick and we had fun playing it, though I think - partially because of the gimmick and partially because of the gameplay - both of us voiced skepticism about its ultimate depth.

Petrichor (1 play) - Area control games are my bugbear. For an area control game, though, this has a lot of nice little things that I like - the varying number of drops needed to activate an area for scoring, the different scoring ramps, the fact some areas need weather to score. I think I'd like to play this a little more to explore it further and see what there is, although it is not impossible that I will not.

Time's Up! Title Recall! (1 play) - not really new because it's the parlor game 'The Hat Game' but this is the first time I've played the boxed version. Usually I think that the four rounds with miming schtick is too tedious to attempt in practice but I was pleasantly surprised that as a game for very large groups late at night (and, presumably, once or twice a year) the whole thing is amusing from beginning to end. It helps that people thought I was good at guessing, because I have to take giving people the impression of me being skilled where I can get it.

Mask of Anubis (3 plays) - The hotness last LoBsterCon but still being played. It is rather fun, we seemed to get the hang of it a little too quickly but its originality makes it valuable.

Vikings (1 play) - Light sort-of tile placement, doesn't outstay its welcome and simple to grasp mechanically. Would play again.

Junk Art (1 play) - Felt like Splash! but better; I like the tactile, bigger objects, the variety of goals the different cities provide (speed-building we all thought was particularly fun), and as a late-night dexterity game, while perhaps rather complicated in terms of framing, this hit the spot pretty nicely.

Startups (1 play) - I'm not convinced this is actually better than Rights, it might just be more complicated and have bigger cards, but it scratches a similar itch and I like the bizarreness of the theming.

Wettlauf nach El Dorado (1 play) - I actually enjoyed this a fair bit, it's a mechanically satisfying deckbuilder where you're racing across a number of tiles to try and get to the finish. I like the way dividers provide a small boost to the non-leaders while acting as a tiebreak to reward a continuous leader at the end, I like the way moving across different surfaces works, and I think I like the mechanics of deckbuilding and trashing even if they seem a little overfiddly. Did not outstay its welcome.

Endeavor (1 play) - This reminded me of Hansa Teutonica but not as terminally dull: the short number of rounds means it feels like it plays very quickly and flows smoothly, and the only being able to take a certain number of workers back, as well as the area majority for governor bonuses and the geography of the board, add some interesting wrinkles. A thematically bland Euro but interesting, thoughtful and spiteful enough to take a rather pre-emptive and hastily-considered crown.

Not sure why this one hasn't ever seen a reprint (except that Z-Man doesn't have the best track record of reprinting all of their well-rated OOP games.)

I remember when it came out there was some negative points about its drab board, heavily Euro-feeling "track management" mechanics, and the ability to use slavery to achieve your goals. I stayed away from it, regretted it when it became unavailable, but finally found a copy on the second-hand market for a decent price. It's a great game and I could argue against all the repeated points of criticism (while understanding where they came from at the time).

This is one of the few games that could benefit from a second edition instead of just a straight reprint, but whenever the idea is brought up, there's crickets.

This reminded me of Hansa Teutonica, except less dull. Despite managing to cadge three governorships I was let down by being woefully underequipped to do, er, whatever the name of that action that is indicated by an icon of a box is.

2009

Cuba's El Presidente hits this year, but Endeavor is a great stand alone game, worthy of the top spot. Tight game turn wise, but one of the games that I think plays better with more people.

Top Five:
1: Endeavor
2: Egizia
3: Campaign Manager 2008
4: Baltimore and Ohio (with the right group)
5: World Without End

#90

Previously #60

Update: Endeavor has a rigid structure that distinguishes it from both eurogames and civ games. The system is balanced almost to a fault, with minimal variation from game to game.

There are a few things going on in Endeavor that make it enjoyable and yet difficult to describe. Each round you can build a building, which will either give you special abilities or a place to utilize to colonize and develop the colonies available, which involves a system of token drafting. One of the main things the buildings and tokens will do is advance you in one of the four tracks. Each track grants bonuses and points depending on how far you've gone up it.

I clearly don't know how to sell it, but Endeavor is an amazingly elegant euro with many great mechanisms. I like the way that the board gets developed and the actions you take become more complicated. You get a nice bonus of a free token for controlling two connecting regions and the more connected regions you have at the end of the game the more points you will score. There will be some direct interaction when you kick people out of spots they occupy, but it's a path you can choose not to go down. The board is randomly seeded with tokens each time, and certain tokens can be spent to take the action shown on them. It creates a nice puzzle as you try to balance the tokens you can utilize with the area you want to control.

Worth noting is the historical, but also controversial, depiction of slavery. You can choose to use it or not, and there is a good chance that if you choose to use slavery you will have a stake in keeping it from being abolished. If you choose not to use it you will most likely want to see slavery abolished. I think it's a very interesting mechanism, and I'm not bothered by it myself.
