I finally had my first game against the dreaded robot: 24 vs. 64 points.

Thinking about it, I must have used the consume action (with trade bonus) too much, thus allowing the robot to gain many victory points. I did that to get many cards quickly, to try and find more military worlds. At least that is something I can identify, among other bad choices I probably made.

Solo game of RftG tonight to celebrate my solo-gamer review of the expansion going live on BGG. The robot rocketed their economy up mid-game, but by then I had plenty of ways to gain cards and reduce costs. A few late 6-costs for the robot made this much closer than it played out:

A pleasing trio of games vs. the bot in Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm. I played three different start worlds against the bot's New Sparta at medium+ difficulty level (one 9-dev, one 6-dev chip).

mb Game 1: WIN, Earth's Lost Colony 41, New Sparta 39

A huge economy worth 28 points carried the day for me here; my three small novelty (blue) worlds chimed nicely with the Free Trade Association. The bot had no trouble gaining both chips and settling 10 military worlds, but luckily most of those worlds were low scoring.

mb Game 2: Loss, Ancient Race 28, New Sparta 46

An easy victory for the bot: it didn't even need the second chip to win by double digits. I had trouble getting anything going while unsuccessfully trying to dodge the bot's sweet spots. The most notable part of my tableau was a New Economy development worth nine points.

mb Game 3: WIN, Damaged Alien Factory 33, New Sparta 28

My opening hand was fantastic: Mining League, Terraforming Robots, Imperium Armaments World, and Radioactive World. I managed to get all four into my tableau, leading to a strong economy and eventual win against a lackluster performance by the bot (only 13 points beyond the two chips).

thumbsup I never tire of this game!
thumbsup Although I love it with two players, it works great solo too.

Race for the Galaxy is my favourite game, and shortly after buying the base game I bought The Gathering Storm in order to have a bigger variety of starting planets. Having read up on the rest of the first arc of expansions, I found that they didn't appeal to me in terms of what I enjoyed about the base game. I looked into the Alien Artifacts expansion when that came out but was put off by the Orb exploration mini-game that slows the game down and again is very different to what makes Race great.

So when I heard about arc 3: Xeno Invasion this seemed to be the perfect expansion - more start worlds, lots more cards to explore and an add-on to the game that worked very nicely alongside the existing mechanics and I was sold! So Xeno Invasion came in and the incompatible Gathering Storm went out.

So I broke this one out as it is one of my favorite card/tableau games. I decided to take out all of the additional soloable expansions except GS. I love it when I beat the AI, it is almost like a in your face defiance....

Anyway, I was able to squeeke at a win Me: 32 / AI 29. EAT IT! But, we both did not get the best lost of the draws.... may I had two strategies blow up on my during my play and still was able to get one of those rare victories.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've played this gem (March 2016), or any solitaire game (October 2016) for that matter! surprise Love you guys, love this list, missed you all!

I had a great play of this one and came close to pulling off victory. As always, the robot had the last laugh though!

I played on Medium and had Separatist Colony as my starting world, while the Robot had New Sparta. With my starting hand and first scouting action, I had a good set of low and high cost Uplift/Green worlds, so I started with that strategy. It took a while to get some traction, though, and by that time I actually had a much better Novelty world set, including the 6-Development Free Trade Association card. I built out a pretty decent tableau pretty quickly (it's a race after all!) but in the end, the robot grabbed a lot of points in its tableau the final turn (6!), to edge me out 32-29. It was a real development and settle race without either of us generating much of a VP engine.

It was a whole lot of fun and I'm hoping I have more time to play (this or anything) soon!

Motivated to play the unplayed games I own that are on the Solo Games Top 100 list, Race for the Galaxy was the first I wanted to try, with the Gathering Storm expansion.

Having spent the first week of the year watching Ricky Royal's 'Box of Delights' playthrough, I set the game up on Saturday and managed a full play on Sunday.

I'm pretty confident I played all the rules correctly (I 'may' have forgotten one or two phases for the robot when I was the only one taking the action ), but I thought I was doing quite well.

The game ended with all of the 24 VP chits used. I had 11 cards in my tableau, the robot only had 6, but it won with lots of VP tokens:

Robot 34
Me 29

I'm quite happy with how it went, and looking forward to playing again while all the rules are fresh in my mind!

Squared off against the bot in Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm for the third time this month. This time I tried three different start worlds vs. the bot's Separatist Colony at medium level difficulty (two 6-dev chips).

mb Game 1: Loss, Old Earth 42, Separatist Colony 43

I had no 6?-developments so my best hope was a strong economy. I managed to amass 30 points in victory point chips (big haul on last turn) but fell one point short. The bot enjoyed lots of good fortune, including drawing a 6?-dev in a Develop phase and the Rebel Homeworld--seven big points--during a Settle.

mb Game 2: Loss, New Sparta 30, Separatist Colony 42

Yeah, this one was not much of a contest, despite the bot failing to capture both of its 6-dev chips. A healthy Terraforming Guild (12 points) accounted for a good chunk of my score.

mb Game 3: WIN, Alpha Centauri 43, Separatist Colony 41

The bot's Colony was remarkably consistent through the three games but this time I managed to beat it. My 17-point economy kept pace with the bot's 21 while two 6?-developments, Free Trade Association and Merchant Guild, netted me 10 and 8 points respectively for the win.

thumbsup a truly great game, one of the very best of the 2000s;
thumbsup the bot is ingeniously designed and a more than worthy opponent.

I decided to play a game of Race for the Galaxy with the Gathering Storm expansion as my Warhammer ACG quest was so brief (I played Merchants and Marauder's last week).

I really struggled with this one the first couple of times I played it and I briefly considered getting rid of it, but now I am very happy that I did not. Aside from the card iconography that people tend to complain about I did not take to the robot AI at first though now it seems pretty simple. I really enjoyed San Juan on my ipad before I bought Race for the Galaxy and Race seemed really cumbersome in comparison, lacking what appeared to be the elegant simplicity of San Juan. I have found that the extra complexity gives Race so much more depth and replayability, however, and I no longer have any interest in San Juan. I really enjoy how all of the cards in my tableau interact during each phase.

Despite my enjoyment, the robot utterly crushed me at 45 to 30 points.

Most Coveted Coin I Collected
(Games I was most glad to reach the next coin level)
Tragedy Looper Dime: After playing all through the base game scripts with a single group last year, I was afraid future plays of my favorite game would come far and few in between due to the learning curve. Luckily, I found some people who had watched the anime that inspired this game that were interested in playing.

Star Wars: Imperial Assault Dime: Got to go through another campaign with a new game group.

Race for the Galaxy Dime: Another game with a steep learning curve that I am glad could find some people who appreciates it.

Pandemic Legacy Dime: It's far from a #1 game from me, but it was still quite the unique experience, especially since I played it all in one day for my longest gaming session ever (12 hours).

Coins I would Spend on Laundry (Games I wish I hadn't played so much):
Splendor Quarter: My cousin's and my mom's favorite game, so this gets suggested really, really often. I even considered selling it at some point so I wouldn't have to play it anymore...

Beowulf: The Legend Nickel: I've grown to appreciate this game more, but it is still far from my favorite, and it feels fairly samey from game to game.

Coins I'm Seeking (Games I wish had gotten more plays)
BattleCON Quarter: Sure I got 22 plays of this, but I never found someone as enthused of it as me who I could explore the intricacies of each fighter together, rather than just scratching the surface.

Clash of Cultures Nickel: I played Age of Empires II as a kid, and this has the most similar feel of the games I've played so far.

Automobiles Nickel: I really like how this game's bag building puts a new take on racing games, but unfortunately the game has not received enough buzz to get others interested.

As always, all images in this post are sourced from the Geek. Two new to me last month, but we won't be starting with the game the Geeklist item image is referring to. Instead, what we're starting with doesn't have a box image to use, because it's a game played with a deck of regular playing cards.

An 11 Column Win

The Bogey

Most card games in the Solitaire family are procedurally generated puzzles, often with hidden information, for which there might be no solution. But once the cards are shuffled and dealt there isn't usually any further luck, even if in some you don't have the information you may need to solve the puzzle yet.

Not so with The Bogey, which feels like a solitaire game of yore but with some decidedly modern twists to it. Instead of being content to be a puzzle that sits there passively while you fail to solve it, the game instead gives you an opponent - The titular Bogey - who takes a turn after you finish playing and discarding your hand of cards for the round. Simple resolution - The Bogey simply gives you a card that you must play, weather it would be a good idea to at this point or not. Sometimes this is fine, other times it really puts a spanner in the works, clogging up an otherwise smooth run.

On each round of play, you will have a hand of five cards, which you can either play to one of 12 piles, discard, or keep for future rounds. When playing to a pile, you can only play a card of the same suit as the pile lower than the last card played to the pile, in the same suit, so you could put an 8 or 2 on top of a 9, but you couldn't play a 10. The first card on a pile can be anything, but that locks the pile to the suit. Get all 52 cards played to the piles, and you win. Fail, and you lose, but the game's rules gives each category of win a level of victory.

The game I want to compare it to most is Onirim, not because it has much in common mechanically, but because both games are simple but tricky card games that give me an almost meditative feel when playing. Unlike Onirim, however, the game doesn't take much shuffling; usually you'll go through the deck 2-3 times during the game, though it sorts the cards a lot during play, so you'll need to give the game a very good shuffle between games of it, but also fills up an awful lot of table space. I'd forgotten from my days of playing Klondike as a child just how much table space 52 cards can take, and this takes more than that ever did, due to ending with up to 12, rather than just 7, piles of cards.

All in all, a very nice solitaire variant, and one that I'm hoping gets picked up by a publisher and given the Onirim treatment of multiple expansion modules included in the box onto this simple, almost meditative, framework, so that it can find a wider audience.

The Heart of a Ruthless Robot

Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm

Solo variants of multiplayer competitive games are often tricky beasts to land, with some requiring a lot of work on the part of the player to run the AI, while others feel extremely disconnected from the feel of the multiplayer original - often due to turning a competitive game into a beat your high score optimization puzzle. One advantage that official variants have over fan made ones, that isn't taken advantage of nearly enough, is that official variants can package extra bits in to make them work, allowing for deeper, more variable, AI systems with often less work for the player to run, which is something Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm takes advantage of.

The robot in The Gathering Storm doesn't play like humans do, instead is controlled by two custom dice - A pair of very nice, chunky, custom dice - labelled with the various actions in the game, a robot symbol which does a different action based on what starting world the Robot had, and a symbol that tells you to place the die on the last action the human player chose. Then, when resolving that phase, you first do your action, then the robot follows a simple checklist to see how it resolves the action. This means that the interaction points are maintained - you picking a phase gives the robot the benefit but not the privilege, and vice versa, and you're still racing against the Robot for the victory chits and getting out a tableau of 12 cards, even if the Robot - like with Morten's automas - is playing a different game behind the scenes.

An advantage of the dice controlled flow chart approach that the Robot uses over other systems I've seen for controlling a 'cardboard AI' player is that the game includes tiles that customize the specific things it does from different actions - how much it pays for things, etc - based on the starting world, so if the starting world gives a development boost, it will be more likely to take development actions due to the Robot symbol, and do them more effectively than the default robot player.

One of the limitations is that this only deals with the cards, not the expansion module of goals, but it's a very nice virtual player based solo mode, and I'm looking forward to playing against it more, and hoping that future expansions continue to support the robot. I'm not sure if it would have been worth buying both Race for the Galaxy and the first expansion for the robot, but if you own Race for the Galaxy's base set for multiplayer, it is well worth getting this expansion for solo play alone in my opinion.

Most of my recent solo games have been "new to me games," so I decided to get out one of my first solitaire purchases. It took a little while to review the setup and rules but after a few turns most of it came back to me.

This is one of the games I enjoy playing even though I seldom win.

Just got smashed by the Robot on Hard difficulty after 13 months or so since my last play.

Oh, and this is part of Solitaire Games around the World (SGatW), which just arrived today!

Ryan's stab at SGAtW

Update 19 December
18 December 2016
3 Solitaire games with TGS
Points: Worlds - Developments - VP Chips - Total

(Me)New Sparta 23 - 22 - 1 - 46
(Robot) Doomed World 7 - 30 - 8 - 45
I Win on Hard

The Robot pouts over its 1 point loss. Take that you punch card driven AI!

(Me)New Sparta 17 - 1 - 16 - 34
(Robot) Old Earth 14 - 9 - 21 - 44
Robot Wins on Hard

(Me)New Sparta 13 - 14 - 1 - 28
(Robot) Old Earth 11 - 19 - 25 - 55
Robot Wins on Hard

Managed to pull out a 1 point win over the Doomsday World Robot on Hard! So I changed opponents and drew Old Earth. I was beat pretty handily in both games, but I did come closest to victory, ironically, by pursuing a consume/produce strategy as New Sparta against Old Earth. I was building a decent VP engine but was a turn or two behind the Robot in engine development, unfortunately. It was getting some very good rolls (trade/consume/produce) on the dice. It was a great game though as it got me back into the produce, trade, and consume mindset. It's hard for me to succeed with that play style against the Robot, no matter the start world I choose. So to come relatively close with a military start world was great. My most successful strategy is to use explore to build up a good hand of military worlds and developments that augment military expansion.

2 Solitaire games with TGS
Points: Worlds - Developments - VP Chips - Total

(Me)New Sparta 31 - 20 - 2 - 53
(Robot) Old Earth 10 - 31 - 23 - 64
Robot wins on Hard

(Me)New Sparta 26 - 0 - 14 - 40
(Robot) Old Earth 6 - 29 - 24 - 59
Robot Wins on Hard

Misplayed my second game badly in the Robot's favor. I had the Terraforming Worlds development and forgot to ever use its Settle bonus. Also had an Uplift world that granted a +1 card draw bonus during the explore phase but I also forgot to employ that until near the end of the game.

(Robot) Old Earth 8 - 11 - 30 - 49
Robot Wins on Hard

Played 4 Christmas Day games against Old Earth as the Heroic Cylons of New Sparta and was demolished every time. My losses were far more embarrassing this than earlier. Sometimes I had great worlds but not the power to build them, sometimes I had great worlds but was lacking the x2 Settle logistical development that I needed to force an early game end. Old Earth is too devastating as an economic powerhouse.

This is one I really would like to like but it has never clicked for me.
The theme feels shallow, you could replace the name and the illustration in the cards and put almost anything.

The robot is nice and has good variations but I find in the end the main point making actions benefit the robot more than me so I feel very constrained. Probably it's because I'm not good at it.

First play using this expansion, really liking the slight additional sense of direction the goals give on first blush, though I lost 32-62. None of the new starting worlds came up. Still fairly quick playing two player game, and some of the new regular cards are really interesting from the looks of it. Very highly recommended for two players.

Has the most ridiculously subtle expansion symbol I've ever seen, however, and... Cyan, in a game already containing blue, was the best colour they could think of for a fifth player colour? Kay then (At least player colour doesn't really matter in this game aside from sorting role selection cards out)
