Havana 2p x1

The humid air is hot and sweet
from old cigars, and blinding heat
and as the sweat beads everywhere
each casts a calculating stare

Only in Cuba, could such plans
hinge on siestas and grand dames
and architects and shady spivs
and oh so clever planning gives
the edge to those who see
the greed borne by the bourgeoisie
--
What a wonderful game. I love simultaneous, or quasi-simultaneous role selection. See my love of the Witch's Brew Trio, The race family, and Visby. I also love "race" goals. That is, when a particular set of victory requirements are achieved, they trigger endgame. See Lewis and Clark, Blue Moon City, Kashgar, and many more. As such, Havana is having a bit of a second wind love affair with me. It's absolutely splendid, and the tension with the turn order makes for hilarious monkeyshines. It keeps moving up in my esteem every time I play it. I played against my mother in law, and just destroyed her- but in the way that comes with familiarity with the system and the vicious barbs it throws. She enjoyed it thoroughly, and wants to wield the tools she saw me cut her apart with next time.
What an underappreciated gem. I like libertalia, but Havana blows it out of the water. Ha!

Race for the Galaxy ww x1

We started as a world with mines
not yours, once tapped we saw the signs
and dressed in armor to the nines
and ventured baring fierce canines
but oh in breaking trad confines,
we switched too late- this thus declines
--
My wife started with alpha centauri, and then halfway through the game switched to NGO and Rebel shenanigans, but it left my focused and improved-logisitics-bolstered empire to slam across the finish line. I love playing it in person with my wife. I know that it's been digitized, and I play online, and all that, but even with the tedious setup, there's something wonderful about eating bagels and shmear in the early morning California sun, and spreading your space-capitalist tendrils across the universe with your wife. I'm also astounded that she's pretty much caught up to my skill level- all I've really got on her is a little sharper predictive skills, and a encyclopaedic knowledge of the cards.

What's my Word ww x1

Hers was virgin, mine was circle
again, I dare to rhyme with quirkle
--
Her first guess was car. We both sussed the words, but goddamit she had almost double my points by the end. This game gets better, so much better, as you learn its quirks- now that she has 2000 points from CAR, should she guess C-A-R words to keep up with points, or guess other lower-scoring words to try and go for the 9000 point correct guess? Spoiler- she did both.

Star Realms: Colony Wars 2p x1

Quick! hand me exlax, ensign smith
This captain's log has too much width
I finished all the old bologna
That's why we've named these wars colon-y
--
Taught coworker. Fun was had. She almost blobbed me to death, but one small outpost, and the gradually attritive Imperial yellows popped in a surprise win.

Race for the Galaxy is one of my favourite games of all time and this card game from Tom Lehman has a very fun solo variant. It comes with the 'The Gathering Storm' expansion. He added a robot to the game that plays a bit differently according to his home planet and it chooses actions with the help of the dice you roll every round. It works perfectly and it can be quite a challenge to beat it.

By doing it this way I can play one my favourite games by myself too, if there's no one around, and as an extra I can improve my skills.

Solo
I had a lot of soloable time last week. When I am caring for Xavie, I play with her when she is interested, and when she is not I can futz on the internet or play a solo game. When I am trying to get her to sleep, I can play a solo game. Needless to say, I have more solo time that I ever did before!

COINs, as it turns out, are excellent for solo gaming as I need time to think between turns, and they are easily played with one arm (the other being used to pat Xavie's bottom so she will be calm!). Liberty or Death (which is amazing) was last weekends foray; A Distant Plain was this weekend's foray. Both games are brilliant, but I think I really love LoD's Commands/LimCom possibilities. Very thematic.

I've also caught the RftG solo bug. I always thought it was a decent way to play, but these last two weeks I have caught the bug and love playing against the bot. I have only won 4 times in something like 16 plays, but at least I am finally getting some wins! RftG is one of my favorite games: why not play it more often! I added in Gathering Storm in the last two weeks, and love some of the new strategies it offers.

Monday Night Legacy Group
With Jon out, we did Terra Mystica again. All three of us love it. I thought Fakirs had a decent chance of doing well after Kris bid 11 points on Ice Maidens, but I didn't notice that Justin's Giants would eat up my deserts and on the first turn of the game, Justin took a desert I desperately needed. This is the first time I've "lost" a game of TM in Round 1. Arguably Round 0 actually, as I should have placed my initial settlements more carefully. If I had initially placed where Justin moved to, I could have come expanded to the other one. Ah well! It was fun.

Saturday with Kris
Terraforming Mars, because Kris wanted to try it out. This play (my second 2+p, and sixth play overall) sealed the deal: I just don't think this game is all that interesting. It feels like a combination of Terra Mystica and Race for the Galaxy to me, and that is problematic: for tableaux full of combos, I'd rather play the more forgiving and more variable RftG; for the map expansion I like Terra Mystica much better. On sell pile.

We then played Terra Mystica, and that made everything better. Random draw of two factions, and Kris's Giants stomped my Mermaids: I didn't notice that Mermaids start with Water power of 1, and I didn't time my large buildings or priest use well. Kris definitely outplayed me, even accounting for my misunderstanding of my water power.

GAMES OUT
Fire in the Lake - Excellent COIN, but subject just not my thing. I'm limiting myself to three COIN max. Sold for profit.
Pixel Tactics - A bit too dry. Not fun enough to keep. Haven't played in ages.
Fabled Fruit - Natalie doesn't love it, and so I peeked ahead at coming cards: boooring. Sold for profit.
Greenland - Neanderthal was cool, but didn't figure I really needed to play this one as well. Profit.

GAMES IN
none

GAMES ON THE HORIZON
Millennium Blades - Went on sale, and seems up my wheelhouse: art, mechanics, obscene amount of variety.
Food Chain Magnate - You read that right. I finally bought it. 5% off sale plus Natalie telling me to "Just buy it already!"
BraveRats (aka Braverats) - Natalie wants our own copy.

I also have Anachrony and 504 sitting at 401games ready to go, but I have to find a $45 games to trigger free shipping, and I just can't find anything that captures my interest. So I'll have to wait on playing those ones.

Item for Geeklist "Maloma's Thematic Monthly Solo Challenges"

I conquered mostly Windfall and Alien Worlds and was lucky with the mb developments.
Actually I was lucky with all cards I gained. And I was lucky with the dice rolls for the mb as well.

With two Easy to drop Alien Worlds in my hand I could have scored even better. But unfortunately the bot’s pace was a little too high for that. He rolled a lot the Settle actions.

Result: +72

Score details:
mb : 15 + 10 + 8 = 33
Me : 15 + 25 + 13 = 53

Differential +20
Win +25
Developments bonus +2
6 Developments bonus +4
Wolds bonus +21

Ps: after the challenge I played two regular games and lost both 39-45 and 20-45, the last one must be my biggest defeat ever. I guess I used up all my luck on my first game

Lately I have decided to focus my solitaire efforts on games that take around an hour or so to play due to my schedule (and to resist certain games that keep appearing on the hotness list...). My selections tonight were Space Hulk Death Angel (love the theme, tension and game play but I'm not sure I've even won a game...I'm not generally one to complain about randomness in a game but ouch...) and Gathering Storm. I'm so glad that I got over the initial hurdle of learning this game. It is a pleasure to see my options unfold over the course of the game and to contemplate different strategies. I love the card interactions and building my tableau; always so much to consider for a relatively quick card game. I had a little more success vs the robot (old world) as the alien factory (broken alien factory? dead factory?) than I have in the past, though I still lost at 31 to 37. I think that I have learned that starving the robot of a card pool when I can works out in my favor.

Sound track: started looking for something sci fi ish but settled on Swans "Children of God".

A challenging trio of games vs. the bot in Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm. I played three different start worlds against the bot's Ancient Race at the highest level of difficulty (three 9-dev chips).

mb Game 1: Loss, Alpha Centauri 30, Ancient Race 52

blush Oh brother . . . a miserable drubbing to start things off: the bot had a nice economy and acquired two 9-dev chips while I basically got nothing going.

mb Game 2: WIN, Epsilon Eridani 40, Ancient Race 34

laugh Oh boy! Steered clear of the bot's sweet spots (it only got one 9-dev chip) and built a strong tableau with many settlements and two excellent 6-? developments: Galactic Federation (8) and Terraforming Guild (10). A clear win despite the lucky bot drawing not one but two 6-? developments during Develop phases.

mb Game 3: Loss, New Sparta 40, Ancient Race 42

cry Oh so close. The bot managed to get two 9-dev chips and that was just enough to edge out my settlement-dominated (eight military!), 13-card tableau, enhanced by two 6-? developments: Imperium Lords (10) and once again the Terraforming Guild (8).

thumbsup Oh well: it's quite an accomplishment to win even once on the hardest level!

This time of year is the perfect moment (not plain touristic season + pleasant air temperature) to spend a couple of days in Italy, near the French border, cycling by the shore on the old railroad converted into a cycling path. Flatter than the Giro's course whistle.

Between various maritime activities, I carried on my intermittent duels with the bot.

After having confirmed, for the third time in a row, that military strategy (Ryan's advice) was efficient to beat the bot (at least, at medium level) even if it was duplicating - almost - all my actions (and gained very big military worlds itself),

the next morning, I recorded my first victory without over-using military. Still at medium level, though. You earn the mid-successes you deserve...

I wish I could share the background sound of the waves on the shore. It was so relaxing, stunning contrast with the tension around the table. I could have sworn several times when swathed by the bot. On a side note: I'm always surprised how vindictive I might be towards a bot. I'm far less competitive when I play against people

It was too early to make any sound, silent frustration swearing or not. So I kept my dignity, and eventually won by one single point. Time to jump into the big pool and challenge the hard level, I guess.

–––––––– Interference ––––––––

Sometimes, I write a draft for an item on my Ipad and finish it the next day when I find the time or a functional internet connection to post it. That's what happened this time.

Although I usually avoid letting real life horrors interfering with my contributions here, I can’t help but feeling some ... absurdity, posting today a light and sunny illustrated item, after having learned about the dreadful events which took place in Manchester last night.

I know it is one dreadful event among dozens we learn about every week; but, boy! Teenagers as ... dedicated targets! I’m missing words.
My thoughts go to those in pain and fear. Everywhere.

I may erase this part of my item, one day or the other, in order to leave a peaceful and casual “posterity” in SGOYT, not polluted by real life absurdity.
But I couldn’t help it; If I were to post my final draft today, I had to write something. Sorry for the interference.

One of those rare occasions I won

I went the Develop road… And the Bot, insidious as he is, followed along gathering 5 6-pointer Developments.

My opening hand with <Interstellar Bank> , <Investment Credits> and <Galactic Federation> gave me a straight forward start.

I did a lot Explore/Develop and thanks to the Explore ability on my Starting World I managed to find New Developments to keep my engine running.

On the very last turn I jumped over the Bot:
The Bot played 2 Developments and 1 World for 9 points
I did to, which granted me 18 points

Medium difficulty - Bot 45 vs Me 47

(18 points count)
6: <Merchant Guild>
2: <Research Labs>
2: (Prosperous World)
3: <Galactic Federation>
3: <New Economy>
2: <Galactic Survey: Seti>

I play two games Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm or one game Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game every Saterday morning in an elders home. They have a indoor pool where my oldest daughter is learning to swim. And the perfect accomodation to play board games... Today I played two games rftg.

And by wonder won both!

My first game was focused on VP's. Something I rearly go for. As far as I can recall also the first game I was happy when drawing Galactic Renaissance. It was a close call, because the bot also managed to gather a fair amount of VP's.

34 - 30

My second game was a blast. Good card flow early on.

And the cards that did make the difference came automatically...

I've noticed when having a good strategy on conquer Worlds, and you can avoid Develop, the bot can rearly follow as in most cases he only conquer Worlds worth 1 or 2 VP's, while you conquer big ones

44 - 31

Time to share a new personal record

thumbsup I like to build on Developments because there are such great synergies to pursue. And sometimes the puzzle just falls in place perfectly.

Windfall trade loop and Aliens as a Bonus

After four rounds I started to get a little nervous because I didn’t draw any key-cards yet – Only windfall stuff.

But I’ve learned that with a good card flow the cards you need will appear sooner or later. And so they did on the last two Rounds

First Alien Tech Institute: +12 VP

Then Galactic Survey: Seti: +11VP

I was hoping for Terraforming Guild, but I’ve checked and it was one of the last cards in the draw pile.

thumbsup All in all I’m quite happy with my final score of 52 VP’s, leaving the Bot far behind.

This also includes
Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium
Race for the Galaxy: Brink of War

All are English First Editions (2008, 2009 an 2010 respectively)

All are in good condition, and includes all 3 boxes if they are wanted. I just checked and all pieces/parts are counted for.
