Rio Grande Games edition pictures. Game components in very good condition. The box has some light wear and whitening. The box bottom has some light indentation, creasing in one corner.

I prefer to trade at the meetup.

More game triaging.

We played Kamisado. It was mildly entertaining. It was competitive, engaging and didn't outstay its welcome. We decided to keep it.

We also played a couple of rounds of the reprint of Medici and found it both fun and surprisingly playable with two. Another one to keep in the collection.

We were going to play Star Trek: Fleet Captains, but my dad decided to finally start dying of dementia (we're just waiting to hear that his heart has stopped) so we didn't get past the rules explanation as I had to spend time on the phone comforting my mum.

3 and 2

BGG voters say this game is best at 6 or 5, recommended at 4, but not recommended at 3 or 2. However, I think the game also works really well at 3 and 2. I find the 2 player variant with seven goods per ship to be particularly effective. It happens to be quicker at lower player counts, too.

Arguments that I don't get:

* "Play Ra instead at lower player counts." Ra feels quite different from Medici, so I don't think the experiences are comparable in this way. (I also like Ra.)
* "With 6 players, every card comes out." I don't see why the chaos of other players bidding is so much more preferable to the luck of goods being removed in advance from the deck. I appreciate both player chaos and mechanically-driven randomness in my games, but I don't understand the strong preference for one over the other in this case.
* "The bidding is more exciting with more players, as the chances that more people will fight over the same thing increase." I'm willing to entertain this. But at lower player counts, there are also more instances where I'll need to outbid someone to deny them what they want while being forced to acquire something I don't want. That brinkmanship (which I greatly enjoy) happens less for me at larger player counts.

8   Eggs of Ostrich x2 -- On Monday night we had enough people for 3 tables, but not everyone arrived on time, so we started with this simple game. Then I played it again at Joe's on Saturday.

8   Jump Drive -- People still hadn't arrived, so we played another quick one. This is my 26th play of this game in 2017 (I had 2 in an earlier year, as part of playtesting.)

10   Medici -- This is my favorite game, and since we had 5 people, we played it (using the earlier French version pictured above.) Two of the players didn't remember ever having played it (it came out in 1995,) but one of them thought he remembered playing it long ago once we were about halfway through. One of the nice features of the game is that it's easy to explain (though not easy to play well.) Lou, one of the experienced players, won by a comfortable margin, though someone else might have edged him out with just the right card draws.

9   Bakschisch -- At this point Brett had to leave, so I brought out another favorite. Geoff was amazingly effective with his thief in this game: twice he collected about 10 coins with one thief use. He won, but it was closer than you might have expected, given his skillful thieving.

8   For Sale -- The other table that was playing SeaFall had a little more time to go, so we played this filler. Geoff won by a margin of 64-63.

10   1846: The Race for the Midwest -- In this game Dan started NYC cheap (5 shares at $60) and got almost all the way to the 12-certificate limit in SR 3, which is quite early. The NYC wasn't a great corporation in the late game, but Dan's full portfolio of good shares (and resulting huge pile of cash from not having to spend on shares much in SR 4 or at all in SR 5) carried him to victory. It's nice that you have to balance getting a great late-game corporation against getting good shares early in this game.

8   Baptism By Fire: The Battle of Kasserine -- I played another day of the solo play of Scenario 5.2. The Germans took Sbeitla, but with the -2 SNAFU modifier, didn't accomplish as much as they would have liked on Day 2.

6   Napoleon's Art of War: Eylau and Dresden NEW! -- I had pulled this Strategy & Tactics game out some time ago with the goal of playing it (I hadn't played before that I remember, though the counters were punched, so maybe I did.) I played the Eylau game, in which the French get a head start while the Russians have to wait till Day 2 to do much. It seemed that that head start unbalanced the game toward the French, but maybe I didn't play optimally for the Russians.

3   Game of Boom or Bust NEW! -- Joe Huber hosted a game day on Saturday, and he had a big stack of (probably) lousy games he wanted to try. The first was this economic game, clearly derived from Monopoly. It didn't have the opportunity to add houses or hotels to a space, but it did have a process to move you from normal conditions to boom, then to bust, and then back to normal. There wasn't much control. I succeeded in bankrupting myself fairly quickly to make it stop. I hadn't rated a single new game lower than  6  in 2017, and Joe solved that problem nicely.

4   Star Reporter NEW! -- This is a game that has a good idea, but way too much die rolling trying to get a 7 or 11, or to get doubles. It has a type of contract fulfillment mechanism, like crayon rails, but the payoffs depend only on ending city and not on how far you had to go to get there, so it's quite luck-dependent as well.

10   Saint Petersburg -- After two sub-optimal games, I wanted to try something enjoyable, and this filled the bill. It was an odd game, in that the early nobles were all quite expensive. This slowed down our economic growth curves. Then, on the last turn, we got a bushel of nobles that cost 4 and 7. One of the nice things about this game is how the random draw of the cards creates different situations (and makes different strategies good.)

5   Top-ography NEW! -- After one good game, it was back to the dogs. I've set a goal of playing no more than 40 new-to-me games in 2017, and this run wasn't helping my chances any. This game involves looking for as many locations on a US map starting with a given first letter as you can find in the time it takes to empty a sand timer. It was actually enjoyable, to some extent, but some of the letters (which you are assigned by the spin of a spinner) are much, much better than others. Joe remembered this fondly from his childhood, so he rated it higher than I did.

7   Iron Dragon -- I suggested that we play this, which is (as far as I know) Joe's favorite crayon rails game. It's not my favorite crayon rails game, but I like the series in general and was happy to play it. We had (I think) two brand-new players whom we taught the rules to before we started; I taught the regular crayon rails rules and Joe taught the Iron Dragon special rules. I just heard that this game is going to be re-released by Mayfair.

2   Buckaroo: The Cowboy Roundup Game NEW! -- This is a 4-player abstract with a severe lock-up problem; if players aim to prevent one player from winning they can do so, and this causes the game to grind to a halt. We finished because one or two of the others conspired to help me win (I was closest) so we could stop.

6   Loot N Run NEW! -- Matt Stone had brought this simple treasure-collecting game alone, and we played a 3-player game. The game worked mechanically, though I didn't find it particularly compelling. It was better than any of Joe's new games, though.

8   Coloretto -- This was yet another game I brought with the goal of playing it. We used the variant that introduces different stack sizes, which was interesting (and gives the first player each round an actual decision!) Our scores were quite high, but Paul edged Matt and I out.

8   Excape -- My final game of the day was a 6-player game of this favorite of mine. Some of the players felt that it was a little too long for what it is, but I enjoy the game, especially the part that involves trying to "read" how aggressive your opponents are likely to be in knocking people off rather than trying to score high for themselves. We were quite aggressive, so the game took a little longer than usual. Fun though.

Prp and I bookended the week with plays of the Arkham Horror LCG. In the first, we finished off our second play of the Night of Zealot campaign from the core set. We were both killed by the blasphemous deity at the pinnacle of that scenario. Then at the end of the week, we started the Dunwich Legacy campaign with a play of "The House Always Wins," where we did pretty well, though not without a bit of luck.

I was on a winning streak with my game group on Tuesday. First I landed a very solid win at a four-handed game of Citadels, which made me feel like a bit of a shark, since I was the one who had brought the game. Then we played Machi Koro: Bright Lights, Big City. I failed to break my losing streak with Machi Koro, though. But I cleaned up at Medici, which three of us played for our final game of the evening.

Prp and I played a game of Caldera, where I stumbled on my first turn, but then proceeded with great efficiency to the win.

We also played a game of Feudality, which was very close for the first ten points or so. I emphasized building in my keep. Got a Castle, had it raided and reduced to a Fort, built it back up to Castle. The whole game was neck-and-neck, until I scored the 3 points off my Castle in the final turn. Prp then attacked me (out of necessity), but only succeeded in winning some gold.

In more Looney Pyramids action, I dusted off Martian Coasters for a trio of plays with Prp. She won the first and the last.

We played some Runebound (3rd ed.) with the Dark Star scenario. I played as Corbin, so that I've now tried all of the available heroes. We were both able to ramp up well, but Corbin was better. Still, Prp had a lot of good luck with stalking in the final combat, and she managed to squeak out a win with Lyssa. Corbin would have defeated her with his next action, given his cast tokens.

Prp slaughtered me at a game of Ignis, which we hadn't played for a long while.

I got my own back in Kingdom Builder. We tied for Discoverers (at 19), and Prp beat me at Families (by 2), but as usual Prp found it hard to work Farmers.

We played our third and final Summoner Wars game of the match between her Melundak Attack Pack and my Immortal Elien's Death Cult, and Prp won. I (momentarily) got Melundak within a wound of death, but I knowingly left myself open to a possible attack from a still-unsummoned Lioneer to do so. That was it for Immortal Elien.
