This is my most played game that I don't actually own. I'm still hoping that reprint/new edition actually happens. My wife likes this one too and we play it most times we go to Spielbound, Omaha's local board game cafe, together. Or, we did until their copy vanished!

A game that packs a massive amount of punch in a very small box indeed. Some extremely clever placement things going on with an active market, a roundel mechanism and a dummy player that - gasp! - works in a head to head game. The scoring is also exquisite - in each round it is the difference that counts, not the total, and you are welcome to go and build the biggest tableau you like if you wish but the final reckoning is all about quality rather than quantity because the player with the biggest village gets penalised, meaning that every decision has to be balanced against what your opponent is up to, and many things besides. A thrilling and refined design that deserves the highest of praise and is long overdue a reprint - one of my top ten forever, I would think.

Since I had taught Dave Lunarchitects, he was interested in seeing the comparisons between it and Glen More. We got the BPA library copy out and gave it a go with Bob Woodson jumping in. We played and reaffirmed my liking of Lunarchitects more - but still a fun game.

On Sunday, my wife & I played Glen More, an older favorite. I feel it still holds up well. Also underrated about the game: it comes in a relatively small box.

I was resource-starved for much of the game, partially because the dummy player kept grabbing the forests & quarries that I'd planned to grab. Furthermore, I wasn't able to get a distillery until very late in the game. I was fortunate to grab a couple of special locations that gave me enough points at the end of the game to make my score respectable, but I was losing pretty decisively from the middle to the end of the game.

Final score: 63-48, in favor of my wife. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable game that we completed in under an hour, but which also has some complexity.

We haven't played Glen More for 8 months! We really need to play our older games more often. The combos are fun. As a tile placement + tableau building game, the combos are generated by activating all tiles (a maximum of eight) surrounding the newly placed tile and this tile itself. So there is a spatial element in building your tableau. Also, there is a time track for picking up tiles, so you can jump further to pick one tile you desire, but as it is the last player on the track to choose tiles you may allow your opponent to choose more tiles.

The game ends suddenly as I didn't notice that my girlfriend could jump ahead to pick tiles, which would exhaust the supply of tiles and trigger the game end. Should I know that, I would sell all my resources for money, which would provide enough VPs for me to win. So that's why even though my girlfriend won, she didn't feel too happy.

Girlfriend's tableau at the bottom, mine on the right.

Received the game described as NIS in a Math Trade, looks like it would also qualify as a ding & dent version as there are significant indentations around all four sides of the bottom and a couple sides of the top of the box, like it was sitting between two smaller heavier object.

And as a bonus Cartagena

Yes, I played Tenzi. Somebody bought it for the dice. We cracked it open, played three games in a row, maybe four. It was enjoyable for what it is.

Last week before my move. My roommates wanted to play one of my games before I left, I had us play Survive: Escape from Atlantis!. We played two games. They enjoyed it. It was either this or Castles of Mad King Ludwig but we chose Survive since it was the simpler of the two.

Introduced this game to some new people. I think I scored my highest ever, the funny thing is, nobody else had played it before and one person got one point less than me and another 3 points more. It went over well. I really like this game. Makes me want to play Limes which has been sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

Deception: Murder in Hong Kong
I am not much of a deduction gamer but I was curious about this. Played with a group of I think 6 people. After a mis-deal I ended up being the murderer on the re-deal which I did NOT want as I had never played and so I didn't want to be the murderer. I was. I decided to choose something outrageous and not really pay attention to what others had in front of them thinking maybe people wouldn't suspect me or somebody wouldn't pick something so dumb... I chose chainsaw and peanut. The first person to mae a case made it against me with the chainsaw and peanut. Thankfully he also made a RIDICULOUS claim on somebody else. I ended up winning, as my accomplice and I figured out who the witness was.

For Sale
One of my favorite fillers. Introduced this to the same group I played Deception with. I had never played this with six people before, I always play 3 or four. WOW. What a difference it is with 6 people. There are only 5 bidding rounds and 5 bids come after yours, potentially. I came in second, or in other words, I lost.

FUSE
My first time playing this. It was enjoyable, again, for what it is. Simple game. We were one card away from winning.

Glen More
Grail game. Finally got to play this game that I have always wanted to play. I enjoyed it. I imagine when the re-print comes out, or the second edition which is supposed to eventually come out, I will pick it up. Now I want to compare it to Lunarchitects.

Honshu
I played this once before, against myself to get a feel for it. It was okay. Had a chance to play oppossed and so I did. I had the exact same feeling I had before, not bad, don't need to own it. I just traded my copy in the recent math trade and don't regret it.

Imhotep
This came across as what could potentially be an enjoyable lite game that I could play with my family. I ran through it and it is not for me.

Java
I had played Taluva Deluxe and thought it was AMAZING! I had the chance to play Java and compare the two. I like them both. I love Taluva, and enjoy Java. I think Java requires a couple plays to really get the greatness of it. It is supposed to be re-printed next year, I believe, I will insta-buy it. It's my kind of game.

K2
Had a chance to play this. I have always been curious about it. It reminded me of Flamme Rouge in that you have cards you play for movement actions. However, you cycle through the SAME cards in this game whereas in Flamme Rouge you can pick up cards to add to your hand, cards you don't want. Also, Flamme Rouge has a modular board. I liked this game though. The person I was playing against, like me, mis-read the effects of the last card and we both had one of our climbers die on the last turn. I tried to climb too high!

Kingdomino
Got in another play of this filler game. Like Cities, you are trying to match certain terrains. This one is simpler than cities. Its auction mechanic is what makes it stand out. I am actually making a game that is similar to Cities but has an auction mechanic like Kingdomino does but it is quite different. It is for an education purpose though. Will see how it plays once I get the pieces printed.

Lorenzo il Magnifico
Heard mixed reviews on this. Got to play it, wnated to decide for myself. It's not for me. I don't think it does anything I can't get from another game I own. Not a bad game though. But, forgettable in the end.

New York 1901
Did a playthrough of this to decide if I should take it to my parents for a family game night. I have a feeling it is something my mom would not want to play, she can handle Ticket to Ride but I don't think this would appeal to her. I imagine I will keep it to introduce new gamers to.

Paradox
There is one aspect about this game that I love. However, for what the game is, it is probably a little too long. Might be better at two-players but then you don't get to go through all the cards which could be a hinderance. I would like to make a game that has the "Candy Crush" aspect to it, as that part was fun. The rest, forgettable.

The Pursuit of Happiness
Finally got my Kickstarter 2nd edition of this game played. I like the story element it builds. It is an alright game. I have a hard time with the light bulbs, hand-shakes and stuff. The resource conversion almost feels kind of pointless. It's not, but it doesn't feel useful the way that mechanic DOES feel useful in an Uwe Rosenberg game. Still, a game I wouldn't mind playing for the story aspect but not for any kind of challenge.

Rise of Augustus
Always wanted to play this "BINGO" game to see if it is something that maybe I could play with my parents. I don't think I will be picking it up for them. It was enjoyable, again, for what it is, nothing i need to own but nothing I would avoid if it is what everyone wanted to play.

Samarkand: Routes to Riches
If Queen Games converts a Winsome game to their line, I am always interested in playing it. This one way fine. I prefer American Rails or Chicago Express but I think I will hold on to this, as, it was fine.

Sanssouci
I have NEVER heard of this Michael Kiesling game and I am always interested in playing his games. This was brought by somebody who relaly enjoys this game and as it was being explained to me, I was smiling, as this is the type of game I usually enjoy and I did enjoy my play of it but I don't need to own it.

ONLINE PLAY
The Castles of Burgundy
Top 10 game. Played online. I lost.

My favorite mechanism which is criminally underused is a time track. It feels much more elegant than worker placement as situations can come up where a player can benefit greatly from a specific action, but that might mean giving opponents extra turns before they catch up. I would take this any day over basic worker placement as a game's central mechanism. I'm very surprised more games haven't been designed in the vein of Kraftwagen specifically.

Glen More however is my favorite game with this mechanic. I like the way that tiles that can be acquired come out on the conveyor belt that is the time track, so if one fits well with the engine being build, you have to consider when it is worth jumping ahead.

Other games that use a time track: Patchwork, Thebes, Red November, and Rocky Road à la Mode.

This is another older one that I'd been wanting to try for quite some time. It didn't blow me away, but I enjoyed it. I like the mechanism that the player in the rear always gets to go first, so there's really a cost to jumping ahead to grab a good tile. I would play it again, but won't be paying inflated prices for it.
