One of my life goals is complete. I have found a wargame that I love. I'm over-dramatizing that a bit, but not by much. I love history; particularly the American Civil War and WWII so that part of me looks at wargames and is drawn by the promise of a game that I'll enjoy. However, I almost inevitably find wargames to be too complex, fiddly, and unapproachable; especially for new players. When I spend hours learning to play a game and then don't play for 9-12 months, I don't want to spend hours to relearn everything.

Because of all that, I'm always searching for wargames that have more approachable rule sets and aren't overly complex, but yet provide that sense of tactical control with enough randomness to make it interesting. For me, Nuklear Winter '68 is one such game and the first one that I have found thus far. Now I realize it's not historical and based on an alt-WWII history, but its mashing of WWII-era technology and weapons with Vietnam Conflict-era weapons and technology just works for me. Also, I think the backstory is original and very engaging. This game offers the best of three worlds for me. You have the link to WWII in the Drittes Reich (the erstwhile Nazis). You get the Vietnam/Cold War era from NATO (U.S. and Soviets). Finally, you get the sci-fi element from the mysterious Black Hand (the denizens of the radioactive zone).

I started a campaign using NATO and I enjoyed my first game, but it was a pretty small scenario and I was still getting comfortable with the rules and the flow of play. Last night, I began playing the Lifeline scenario, which features NATO's first contact with the Germans. I'm not always that patient with games that run on the longer side. So, to tell you how much I like this game, last night I was playing for over three hours and the time just flew by. I would have continued playing if it wasn't late and I didn't have to get to bed. I have been thinking about the scenario off and on all day long. It is just telling such a cool story.

Basically, NATO engineers are working in three areas to get the water purification system up and running so that clean water will be available as more troops move into the area. Your objective is to protect those three areas from a suspected German attack. My M109 Paladin and two artillery barrages did some serious damage to the enemy armor before they could get close. The Germans then made an effort to outflank the NATO forces and avoid the teeth of the NATO armor and the M72 LAWs of the Rangers and Spetsnaz forces. They also used an artillery barrage to take out the Paladin. NATO's T-62s have been duking it out with a heavily-armored King Tiger. The German objective is to control 2 of the 3 objectives at the end of eight turns. If they control one, the scenario is a draw. Any other result is a NATO victory. It's the beginning of turn 6 and the Germans are ready to assault one of the objectives. Can the NATO forces hold them off for three more rounds? Stay tuned to find out.

To complicate matters further, two Black Hand zealots have appeared in two deserted churches.

Great game!

Saw this game posted a few times and liked the backstory and theme as well as it seeming like a lower-complexity wargame so I picked up a copy from the Marketplace. I read the rules last weekend and got it to the table tonight for the first time.

I decided to just start a campaign as NATO. The first scenario in the NATO campaign is Rangers Lead the Way and has the 1st Rangers going against the mysterious Black Hand. Two Ranger units riding in M-113 APCs along with an M60A1 tank and a Spetsnaz sniper team rolled in from the south to try and take over an abandoned factory that seems to be a Black Hand outpost. They want the factory for two reasons:

1. To use a forward operating base for future missions
2. To eliminate the Black Hand outpost based there.

The sniper team had been dropped in previously and was concealed in the forest a little south of the factory on overwatch duty. The M60A1 led the column and as it rolled north up the road came under fire from a Blight and was damaged. The tank left the road for the cover of a wooded area. Then, a band of zealots assaulted the APCs and both were damaged, wounding some of the men inside; not an auspicious beginning to the mission.

The sniper team took out a Zealot unit and the M60A1 was able to disrupt the Blight. From there things got ugly. One of the APCs was destroyed, killing everyone onboard. Then the tank was taken out by more fire from the Blight.

The snipers took out another Zealot unit and the shaken Rangers unloaded from the M-113 into an urban area. They were assaulted by Zealots, but gave them heavy damage as they moved in for the assault and the assault was unsuccessful.

The second (now empty) APC was destroyed and the Rangers were assaulted again and destroyed. It seems that the Rangers underestimated the Black Hand. They definitely need to bring more firepower on the next mission.

Too early yet to give thumbs, but so far I really like the game. After checking the rules pretty frequently at the beginning of the game, I was mostly good by the second turn. If you haven't read the backstory on this game, you should check it out because it's a very cool and unique take on an alt-WWII history. I do have a bunch of questions about how the campaign works, but I'm off to the forums to try and clear up what I don't understand.

Has been described as "Approachable rule sets, not overly complex, provides a sense of tactical control with enough randomness to make it interesting."

Dark, gritty and eyepleasing look that fits the setting.

Chit-pull mechanic should create some thrill to it

Expansion available for replay value

Crosscheck Nuklear Winter '78?

Man, I think the theme and backstory of this game are cool. It's set in an alternate WWII history where Germany gets nuked, but also develops nukes and takes out London and Paris. The remaining Nazis hide in underground bunkers for 20 years, the Soviet Union and U.S. become NATO allies, and a mysterious faction called the Black Hand emerges from the radioactive ashes in the devastated areas of Germany.

The game features a mix of WWII-era weaponry with some slight advances (the Germans continued weapons development while in hiding) along with Vietnam error technology from the NATO allies since the game is set in a fictional 1968. The Black Hand has some humanoid soldiers along with armor and weapons developed from scraps left in the war-torn areas of Germany. They also have some biological and mutated weapons that arose from the high levels of radiation.

There are a bunch of scenarios that can be played as one-shot games with two or three players, but you can also play a campaign as any one of the three factions, which I think is really cool. I started a campaign as NATO and played the first mission on the list called: Rangers Lead the Way. My M60A1 tank and mechanized Rangers didn't stand a chance against the Black Hand.

After one play, I liked this one a lot. I'm thinking about picking up the expansion called Heart of Darkness.

I also played two solo games of Herbaceous scoring 56 and 45.

Yes, I get to contribute to my first Secret Santa geeklist!

I found a nice little surprise in the mail from my Santa today. It was this microgame on a postcard, Claim Jump, with a note on the back saying Santa is thinking about me. Awesome! Thanks, Santa! I can't wait to see what else I have in store!

Update: 12/21/16

Wow! My santa REALLY knocked it out of the park! Today I received Nuklear Winter '68 and the expansion Nuklear Winter '68: Heart Of Darkness. These have been VERY high on my wishlist for a long time, and now I'm a proud owner! Also included was Ferox, yet another game I've been drooling over.

To top it all off, Ferox was the print & play version, meaning my Santa hand crafted the game for me! And they did an amazing job, it really looks like a ton of care and effort went into making it, and I am beyond grateful for that. I cannot wait to play these games. Santa, you are amazing, and then some!

Crystal clear skies showing a weak sun, temperatures below zero, skiing, and sitting in front of a warm fireplace with a glass of wine. That’s what I immediately associate with winter.

Crystal clear & weak … two attributes that often apply to rulebooks. Can you think of two examples for a great and a worthless rulebook?

0°C or less and skiing … are there good games featuring cold temperatures and/or skiing you know of?

And finally, a fine glass of red wine can be as great as a winning a game of World in Flames (or any similar epic game). Do you know any good games about wine? Or fireplaces?
