The only thing I played was a very long 4 player game of Castles of Burgundy.

I enjoyed it, except I wasn't happy with how long it took. I think what made me not so happy is that everyone there had experience with it before, everyone but one person had a very firm and familiar grasp of it and it went on for about 2.5 hours.

I tried Veggie Garden on BGA once, and it's a decent little game. I feel like if it came out 5-6 years ago, it would have been a pretty big hit. I might give it a few more plays.

So our bedroom has been a bit of a disaster since moving in. We bought a brand new furniture set, but had a huge delay with our dresser getting delivered. We finally got our dresser in, but it's felt cramped in our bedroom. So while Kim and her mother were out shopping on Saturday, I moved all the furniture in the bed room, and completely redid the layout of it. I also mounted the mirror and the TV. Moving a King Size bed by yourself is a lot of work. Kim had kind of a shitty time out shopping, but when she saw the new bedroom, she was so happy. It made all that sweat and sore muscles well worth it.

I've been both watching the latest episodes of Game of Thrones and rewatching the older episodes. I had such a hard time getting into the show at first. (A common problem with me.) But this show is just so damn good. I'm now ranking it as my favorite show, which is a dangerous situation to be in. Every time I've done that, the ending has always been unsatisfactory. (Except BSG. I'm one of the few that was content with the ending.)

I've also been watching Weeds. A very odd show. It's like Diet Cherry Breaking Bad. The episodes go by quickly.

We just ended a 59 day dry spell, which for Portland is a very long period. Weather is getting more and more extreme here, lately. Despite the humidity, we've enjoyed the cooler temperatures the last few days.

Ah, The Castles of Burgundy, how we've missed you. This is definitely one of those games that we should play a lot more, and it has waited a while for its first play of 2017. I recently ran my games through Pubmeeple's game ranking engine and it spat this one out at number 4, so I clearly like this a lot. It's at the more involved end of gaming for us, with plenty of choices but clear of all those unnecessary intricacies that blight so many more tricky games. We played this with hidden scoring for the first time, which we thought would be KT's preferred way, so totting up the individual scores as we went along but adding them up only at the end. My tableau was more aimed towards gathering animals, while KT went a-building with enthusiasm, and it turned out, despite a couple of big scores for me, that she had pulled out a big lead by the end, aided by some mammoth goods sales, beating me 209-140.

Thursday

We snuck in a couple of games of Jump Drive in a bar on Thursday afternoon. As usual KT managed to get her engine up and running nice and early, although I did have a good run with the Genes cards in our second game. She won both times, 58-40 and 74-57, and we managed to take this game into quarter territory with its 25th play.

Friday

On Friday evening, back at home after climbing all 931 metres of Skiddaw in the afternoon, we broke open Race for the Galaxy for a late night best-of-three. Piling healthily past two hundred face-to-face plays in our house this shows no sign of slowing down at all, and is still presenting us with new challenges on almost every single game. In our second game of the evening I managed to put together a synergised Uplift tableau to soar to a healthy win, while the games on either side were more tricky affairs as both of us struggled to get our cards to work together, although KT managed it with more success to win the series 2-1. Our scores for the three games were 42-23, 44-70 and 42-23.

Sunday

A second appearance of the week for The Castles of Burgundy as I am really keen to explore the great games we have without just playing them once and then putting them away for a year or so. This was a much tighter game as both of us fought against dice rolls and really tussled for the tiles on the board. For once I went against my charitable instincts and left the animals to fend for themselves, instead building up a knowledge combo that not only allowed me four workers per die but also let me adjust each roll by two for a worker. Effectively this meant that I was able to work around the trickier rolls, but I still feel that I am some way short of being able to maximise what I am able to do. All the way through the game it felt as though I was ahead, but the hidden scoring (which we feel works well) had a surprise up its sleeve, for KT's bonus knowledge tiles gave her the victory by only ten points, 171-161. Still a fantastic game.

In other news my reviews are now available for Haspelknecht, Planetarium and Railroad Revolution.

Happy gaming!

I really do not like Feld games. They, for the most part feel similar to me and the point salad gets old after awhile. However, of all the Feld games Castles of Burgundy is probably the least annoying to me and thus I get stuck playing it. If enough people want to play, then I will play, because I don't detest it. I often do well, it just feel like a wasted 90 minutes to me.

#16 - The Castles of Burgundy (-2)

For a lot of people, theme is a huge determining factor in their enjoyment of a game. While I enjoy a good theme, I have to admit that I am much more enthralled by game mechanics, and couldn’t care less about theme if the game gives me a system with interesting decisions and puzzles. Stefan Feld is one of the kings of mechanic-driven Eurogames, and sadly, The Castles of Burgundy is the only design of his that I have played. The game has such a nice flow to it as you simply roll your two dice each round, and then try to come up with the most efficient way to utilize your roll to meet your goals. It is no doubt a “point salad” where stumbling aimlessly will still cause you to score left and right, but it offers a wealth of interesting tradeoffs as you add tiles to your estate and try to complete regions. Certainly not a flashy game, but it is one that I really enjoy.

I feel like Castles of Burgundy is one of my stronger games. I did spent more effort in qualifying this year--participated in Heat 3 because I wasn't certain that a 1st and a 3rd would make it, and I didn't want to take chances and get shut out.

First Sunday, Heat 1 We were playing on a monastery board, and I got messed up by the geography. I was trying to play a heavy boat strategy, but after placing my first two boats, I just couldn't get over to my other boat spots. While I did end up with both of the shipping bonus tiles, I ended up getting *zero* scrolls. This worked itself out to 3rd place.

Monday, Heat 2 Somehow I ended up playing on the same monastery board that befuddled me yesterday. To change things up, I started my castle in a different place. Both the shipping point tiles came out in the initial draw, but I managed to get the point-per-sold tile despite being fourth. I also got the sell-goods-for-two-money tile as well as the take-from-adjacent-depots tile early. Combined with some early mines, I was rolling in money all game. I actually managed to do the monastery thing this game too and was able to claim the bonus tile. I finished with 258 points, which put me pretty far in first.

Wednesday, Heat 3 I wound up at a 3-player table with Rob Kircher and GM Richard Irving. I used ships to take control of the turn order early, and took the 1 point per goods tile. I also got the 2 money per sold goods tile before I had sold too many goods, as well as the tile that gives you extra money when you take workers. So basically, I was rolling in money all game. I was waiting for the other points for shipping tile, which would also complete my yellows. However, in the final round, not only did it not come out, there were no yellow tiles for me to buy. So I had to spend extra time taking a useless yellow from the board, and I was having trouble with animals all game, so I ended up with a pretty unimpressive score. Rob managed to complete both 6-size building fields, and blew both Richard and I out of the water.

Saturday, Semifinals I was at a table with Nick Vayn, who I remembered had crushed me two years ago in the semis on the way to winning the whole event two years ago. I had a poor opening, partly because of dice and partly because 3 people placed their starting castle near water so there was a ton of competition for boats. I got the point-per-good tile only because the first player didn't want it. The pivotal point for me happened in the middle of the game, where I was ahead in the turn order by one over Nick. I had just moved ahead in turn order, so I'd get another turn before he'd get one. I decided to do the less aggressive thing and take 4 sheep instead of another boat. Of course, my next roll completely precluded me taking the boat, Nick got the perfect roll to take and place the boat (getting 2 goods in the process), and he went first for the next round and took the points-for-colors shipping tile. Anyway, Nick ended up with a really impressive score to win, while my poor dice luck persisted and I came in 4th.

Another year of me getting bounced in the semifinals. One day I'll make the finals...

Friday afternoon Steve joined Gary, Rose, and me for The Castles of Burgundy. I love this game but affection doesn't always translate into competence. I was scratching out a meager existence, trying at least to be the first to fill a couple colors, but failed even at that. My biggest gaffe was neglecting to pick up ships in the early game, and before I knew it I was well back in turn order with little chance of catching up.

Rose boxes up another shipment

Going last for almost the entire game, I missed out on most goods and never saw a ship after I realized what I was doing wrong. Steve had no such problem, collecting a massive herd of cattle for a fat stack of VPs, while Gary was a shipping maven and Rose mined and built her way to a tidy score. Steve finished with a mighty 231, Rose followed at 191, Gary took third, and I brought up the rear with a mercifully unlapped 167.

We don't play this often enough as it seems we have to do a quick re-learn of the rules every few months. It still remains a lot of fun, and one that I'm still indebted to this guild for pushing me to buy.

I have a couple of the small expansions but we haven't tried those out yet though.
