66 years, 8 editions (1909 – c.1976)

This was the first wargame to introduce the “fog of war” through hidden placement. It was invented and self-published by Mlle. Hermance Edan in 1909. It became popular enough in France that HP Gibson bought the international rights in 1916 and went on to publish multiple editions in succeeding decades.

The game is the ancestor of Stratego, and is played on a 9x10 square board with three 2-space lakes in the middle. Players each have 36 pieces with values ranging from 2-10, and can set up their pieces freely within their half of the board. Players take turns moving one piece at a time, and may “attack” by moving up to an enemy piece. The values are then revealed, and the lower ranking piece is eliminated. Equal values create double elimination, while mines kill anything but can’t move, and the Spy kills the Commander-in-Chief but dies to anything else. A player wins by capturing the enemy’s flag piece.

The 1909 first edition is quite distinctive. It was packaged in a large wood-sided box. The playing pieces not only had medal stands, but were inserted into pebbled metal backs. And it included two boards, one printed on the bottom of the box, and the other removeable, with ribbons pinned across the eight set-up rows to hold pieces firmly in place.

Gibson kept the original English and French illustrations for its first edition, but then moved to more generic art. It also ditched the metal backs and board ribbons, presumably to save money. The plain board layout remained unchanged until the final edition, when Gibson tried to revive its appeal by putting out a colorful “Five Bridges” board in the mid-1970s. By then, however, the Stratego brand had taken over the hidden placement concept.

The appeal of this game clearly came from the dual challenge of developing a set-up that would provide effective attack and defense against an unknown enemy disposition, and of remembering pieces that get revealed and keeping track of them until they can be dealt with. Gibson went on to develop a naval version (Dover Patrol), an air version (Aviation) and a combined arms version (Tri-Tactics) that stands up today as the most challenging example of this mechanism.

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

A very clever little strategy game, where the value of your pieces is hidden from the opponent. The bigger piece always takes the smaller one, except that the smallest piece can take the biggest one. Great game - I just wish the board were a little bigger and one could set traps or landmines for the opponent to find!

I have to say, I don`t see any future in games about some war. We have the 20th century now for almost a decade and haven`t seen any mentionable war! So, come on, - be a bit more realistic and look for other themes.

1908 AD

From here:

Quote:
In its present form Stratego appeared in Europe before World War I as a game called L'Attaque. Thierry Depaulis writes on "Ed's Stratego Site":

"It was in fact designed by a lady, Mademoiselle Hermance Edan, who filed a patent for a 'jeu de bataille avec pièces mobiles sur damier' (a battle game with mobile pieces on a gameboard) on 11-26-1908. The patent was released by the French Patent Office in 1909 (patent #396.795 [5]). Hermance Edan had given no name to her game but a French manufacturer named "Au Jeu Retrouvé" was selling the game as L'Attaque as early as 1910... "

The edition pictured here of this Stratego variant shows a river across the board with bridges. Other editions were more abstract, but also used water areas to limit crossings of the centre of the board.

I picked this one up on eBay after doing some research on game history. Mine is similar to the one in the photo, but older (1920s?, 1930s?). It's exactly the same game as Stratego, which I already have, so it's not going to get played. Aside from this I have a number of antique and/or traditional games that are mostly just display pieces.

This game predates both Stratego (direct reference) and the Dawn Patrol type games. It was released in 1909, before World War I!
