This might come out of left field, but pretty much the entire metagame of this game comes down to reading your opponent. Much like chess, it's a perfect information game that's all in each other's heads -- I've not played a more stressful game yet. The whole game can be summed up in "trying to flip from defending to attacking," which means the whole 30 minutes plays out as a tense fencing match across a giant grid of space. Definitely check it out!

Twixt Heirloom Board
Project Type: CNC Router
Project Material: Hardwood maple
Project Link: Easel link

My first port of call was the CNC machine: Carvey. I've used these before but never such a portable/entry-level one -- I love the accessibility to cool equipment that this library is providing!

I used the CNC router to drill 572 holes in four blocks of hardwood maple, to make a Twixt board. Because of the limitations of clamping, I had to drill each block in four quarters, or 36 holes at a time. This was way faster than doing it by hand, but still took me two sessions total. The blocks don't line up as perfectly as if I had a fully manufactured set, but what they lack in finish they make up for in sheer weight/quality.

Here is the Easel link if it's helpful to anyone:

Some pictures:

Hardwood maple being carved.

Testing the connections, and we're a go! Due to rotating the wood there is a bit of variance in the pegs where the four quadrants meet, but it's not too noticeable and it's within tolerance for the connectors.

I'm planning felt on the bottom and then a neoprene playmat to keep all four in place.

Stain came out a little patchy, I think because I sanded with too fine a grain of sandpaper to prep the wood. All four are roughly uniform, though, and if it starts to bother me too much I can definitely sand off the polyurethane finish and re-stain each piece

When all four are together, you will notice a slight split in all four 'seams' because the edges of the wood are not perfectly straight. But it's minor (<1mm) and the links still connect across it.

More pics:

All of the pieces line up, though not perfectly. My original four wood pieces fit exactly, but I ruined the first one and had to order a replacement, which is a little askew to the other three. Still, all four of them are within tolerance, as this image illustrates -- only 1-2mm between the largest gap, and still plenty for the links to cross.

There's also some uneven stain on two quadrants, I'm currently reapplying those for a bit of a darker and more even stain. I really like the dark ebony finish on the maple.

Compared to the regular board, this one is easily twice as thick, and feels totally different when you're playing. I'm going to really enjoy playing matches on this "heirloom" board.

Yep, I already have one, but I just can't seem to leave these 3M games behind. Especially not when it's one I enjoy playing as much as this nifty little abstract.

And especially not when it is in nearly pristine condition and on sale at half price. $2.67 with discount from 2nd Mile.

45 plays is a little low in a month for me, but 22 different games is in fact a little higher than usual, so all in all August has been a good month.

--

8.0   Twixt x13 NEW! - Just discovered this one, and I'm obsessed -- trying (and succeeding) in getting my friends obsessed too. This is an overlooked abstract from the 70s that's super solid, with a lot of strategy within it.

8.0   Century: Spice Road x4 - Still a solid game, I enjoy playing it a lot, one of my top light games currently.

N/A   Secret Hitler x3 NEW! - Not my idea, a friend's copy. I enjoyed this one all right, but I still prefer 2 Rooms and a Boom if we're doing a hidden identity games, and I don't like hidden identity games in general, either.

 6.0   Blokus x2
 4.0   Codenames x2
 8.0   Lancaster x2
4.0   Mottainai x2 - Played again to see how it stacks up to Glory to Rome -- it doesn't.
 4.0   Patchwork x2
 8.0   Smash Up x2
 8.0   7 Wonders
 8.0   Carcassonne
 8.0   Deep Sea Adventure
 10.   Dixit
 10.   Escape: The Curse of the Temple
N/A   Guilds of London NEW! - An intriguing new play, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
 6.0   Kingdomino
 8.0   Quantum
 10.   Russian Railroads
 10.   Sheriff of Nottingham
N/A   Sounds Like a Plan NEW!

 4.0   Mottainai x2
Glory to Rome is my favorite game, so that may be the needed context for this comment. Mottainai is...boring. It's over too soon, it feels like they stripped out the best parts of GtR, and this 'spiritual' successor is just a light card game with a bad theme. We (myself and my father-in-law) played it twice in a row (our second and third plays total) to make sure it wasn't just us -- only thing that might save it is trying it at a different player count, but it sure clunks at two.

 N/A   Guilds of London NEW!
Dad also taught me this sweet worker placement. We disagree on the impact of the move cards. He feels they are too restrictive and break the game -- I was fine with them -- that is the game.It was a tight game, but he took the crown by two points. This was his fifth play and my first, so I felt good I'd made it so competitive. Eager to learn at higher play counts where you 'discover' new tiles. The plantation, though, felt wholly superfluous to me -- I thought it would have been a tighter game without that 'pseudo-location' that worked differently than all the others. Again, maybe my opinion will change at higher play counts, but that doesn't detract from my overall very positive impression of this one.

 8.0   Twixt x8
This is the story of the week -- we've unexpectedly been playing this 1960s abstract over and over and over again. I've taught it to four people and want to keep teaching it to bring this classic back.
Reasons I like it: spatial game I can actually understand, chess-like feel where you both have all the information and yet you're trying to outsmart your opponent. As my father-in-law said, "This is not about placing one peg after the other, but placing the pegs that give you multiple options to respond to an attack." The goal is simple: connect two sides of the board and stop your opponent from connecting the other two sides. My friend Nathan particularly took to this game, playing 5 matches with a win rate of 16.66667%. Ouch!

I've repainted my set from the default white board, red and black pieces to a more eye-catching red and silver combo on a black board. I'm currently looking for a way to craft a wood board, as well as add the guidelines back in.

Nathan and Stephen matching wits in Twixt.

 8.0   Carcassonne
While Nathan and Stephen finished up two matches, I played Carcassonne with Alisha and Grace. Like the game, but cannot beat my wife, no matter how hard I tried.
Final score: Alisha 85, me 62, Grace 49

 8.0   Century: Spice Road

We played a 5-player game of this and I cruised to an easy win. I don't know why, this is just one of those games that I 'see' very well and can ride the card combos nicely. It wasn't very close, either.
Final score: me 71, Nathan 52, Alisha 46, Stephen 43, Grace 39

 8.0   Smash Up
Alisha had lesson plans to work on so the remaining four of us tackled Smash Up. This is one of our most-played games and Nathan, Stephen, and Grace are three of my friends who are most experienced at it. We did a pick-and-ban which is always fun.

Grace and I both took early leads but stalled out in the second half. Nathan worked his aliens to climb up to 10 points, but in the end, Stephen rode second place on every base that Grace and I won, finally winning a base by himself (he had bears, so 'Superiority' kept us off) to cruise to a 17-point win.
Final score: Stephen 17 (bear cavalry sharks), Grace 14 (mythic mythic greek ponies), me 13 (Superhero Time Travellers), Nathan 10 (Alien ghosts)

 N/A   YINSH NEW!
After Friday family night and Saturday game night, we were back over at my father-in-law's for Sunday afternoon. I taught him and Evan Twixt (played one game each against them, then they played a game, included above) and then they levelled the playing field by teaching me YINSH, where Evan cleaned my clock easily with a 3-1 victory. Like I said, I'm bad at most spatial games!

All in all a good week.

Finally got to try this one out and it's a super-solid abstract that I really enjoyed. Love the two-player push-and-pull and the fact that there's really only two rules.

Update: with more plays, this one is continuing to rocket up the charts.

About two inches of cover art blemish to the box are/packaging where tape was used to keep the interior box from falling out. Game materials in good shape.
