This RPG entry is for the fourth edition of Private Eye.

The first edition appeared around 1988. After the third edition (1993) and five official adventures published in the early 1990s, the game almost disappeared. It had been an independent fan creation, Jan Christoph Steines being one of the main writers. Additional material had been published in fanzines such as Foliant, Adventure Master, and Trodox.

Private Eye was rediscovered in 2003 by Sylvia Schlüter and Ulrike Pelchen (Redaktion Phantastik), who received the licence to produce a new edition. This 4th edition was released in 2008.
