From the introduction:

Harlequinade is a very simple role playing game.

The game themes are paranoia, horror and comedy.

If you like your role playing serious (or should that be pretentious?), then Harlequinade is probably not the game for you. If you take Harlequinade seriously, then pay a visit to your doctor and tell him your problems. If you can bear to laugh at the world occasionally, then you may find a few hours entertainment herein.

Harlequinade has gone through six versions:

  • 1978 - original version titled "Ideal World", 30 pages, unreleased
  • 1988 - second version titled "Harlequinade - Ideal World 2", abt. 150 pages, text format, limited distribution
  • 1997 - third version titled "Harlequinade - Ideal World 3", 78 pages, RTF format
  • 2002 - fourth version titled "Harlequinade - Ideal World 4", abt. 100 pages, PDF format
  • 2002 - fifth version titled "Harlequinade", 94 pages, PDF format, first widely circulated version
  • 2003 - sixth version titled "Harlequinade (Diceless)", 28 pages, PDF format, adapted to Active Exploits RPG engine
