User Summary:
This family encompasses all books and supplements set in the world of Magnamund, created by Joe Dever. It encompasses solo game books, novels, and the d20 RPG.
The first Lone Wolf book, Book 01: Flight from the Dark, was published in July 1984 and rapidly gained great popularity, selling over 100,000 copies in its first month. Many more books were written, and translated into around thirty languages. The series of gamebooks had the (then) unique selling point of forming a continuous story in which the main character played by the reader developed over time. The books formed a large and coherent setting, and events in previous books were referenced by and influenced the plot of later books in the series.
Various supporting items were created, including computer games, an atlas (The Magnamund Companion), and novels. Together with Ian Page, Joe Dever also created a second series of gamebooks set in the same world but with a different antagonist, Grey Star the Wizard.
Eventually the series ceased publication in 1998, as the then publisher Red Fox believed that gamebooks were no longer commercially viable. But interest in the works continued by fans, particularly over the internet leading to the creation of Project Aon. This group of fans secured the permission of Joe Dever to republish his works for free on-line (including the unrelated Freeway Warrior (Gamebook) and Combat Heroes series of gamebooks). This renewed enthusiasm in the books leading to the creation of a Lone Wolf role-playing game and an eventual re-release of the original gamebooks (updated and expanded).
The Lone Wolf range continues to delight fans today, now encompassing a wide range of different types of games.
