Vore helte ankommer til minebyen Hellhole midt i den californiske Great Maze. Byen summer af liv, fulde minearbejdere, syngende dansepiger og skrigende røg fra dampmaskinerne. Her stinker af sprut, sved og sulfur. Et vivar af folk bevæger sig rundt i byen – de flestes hudfarve er gemt under et tykt lag af gulligt støv og sort sod.

En enlig præst står på et gadehjørne, og prøver at råbe folk op med sin prædiken. Et par tungt bevæbnede ordenshåndhæver står og griner foran en bar. Og ned af gader flytter alle folk sig, for byens elegant klædte borgmester og hans kvindelige ledsager.

Ingen lægger rigtig mærke til de fem fremmede, som kommer i land fra færgen. De skal aflevere en værdifuld pakke til bankdirektøren – men snart bliver de rodet ind en mere alvorlig sag.
