The game allows the player to choose a race (or species - alien or otherwise) which grants special abilities or has other bearing on the gameplay. A common example would be the Elf from Dungeons & Dragons who does not need to sleep or the Dralasites from Star Frontiers who have limited shape shifting capabilities that other races in the game don't.
