Games are listed with category and mechanics. This is a useful descriptor for the game, and also very handy for advanced search.

The category and mechanic is typically chosen by the submitter, and never changes again. It is possible for it to be changed by submitting a correction, but this requires admin intervention, and ends up being one person's opinion. Whether a game belongs in a certain category is frequently a matter of some dispute, and it is clear that many games are incorrectly or incompletely summarized.

Allowing BGG collectively to express an opinion on this would allow some positive things to happen:
1) Missing or incorrect mechanics and categorization could be corrected without the intervention of an admin.
2) The degree of consensus on a category or mechanic could be easily displayed (75% of voters think Memoir '44 is a wargame...).
3) Better categorization would make advanced search more useful.

I am thinking the relationship agree/disagree would serve as a useful model. Anyone could add a mechanic or category to any game, but those with a consensus disagree would not be displayed. For the ones that are displayed, the number agreeing/disagreeing would be displayed, and each user could also choose to agree or disagree. Those with an agree consensus would also be considered a "match" for the purposes of advanced search.

Extending the same concept to play times could also be interesting and illuminating, though at least in that case many games have an official play time from the manufacturer.

Great idea.

Another suggestion that has been made is allowing us to apply Flickr-style tags to games.

Also addition of new mechanics
Also, couldn't we allow the addition of new mechanics or themes? Sometimes there is something unique or almost unique, shared by very few games, that is not a listed mechanic. And in the theme department, I think allowing users to sort of vote-in categories would be nice.
