Can these games be compared? I like the whole africa exploration theme, though I have read that these are fairly abstract. Any comments?

I meant heart of africa, don't know where the dark came from.

I like Reiner Knizia's Africa. It's definitely an abstract exploration game with a thin African theme. The same game could easily be 'exploring Asia' or 'exploring South America' with very few changes.

I haven't played Heart of Africa.

Another vote for Knizia's Africa.

You have to make some basic decisions: are you going for gold or gemstones, consolidating wild animal herds or finding lebensraum for indigenous tribes...

Game ends by "chit draw" method, which adds uncertainty to the endgame.

High quality components.

A good family game, not very taxing. It takes a little while to figure out the forced trading rules.
