HI
i just played my first game in this and was wondering if we missed the part that changed the value of the dice as you used them up.
we realize that they devalue (decrease) going over locks/bad terrain by 1
but once they are off the board and used , going into that storage track,
they sit as that lower number. so we had at one point 4x 1 value dice then going back onto the board when we had to call the scrubber (action to bring back a die) so teh coal is then sitting as 1 value and not very good
(even a 2 value which reduces to a 1 is terrible)

Is there a mechanism that rerolls or increases the coal when it come sback onto the board?
or is always the same as when it went off the board with the initial sale?

Question 2:
since there are only 12 actions/turns in the "game" does it make sense to try to get the goals? some of them require like 7-8 actions of deliveries just to open up the tiles to build the warehouses.
seems really really impossible to get any extra money.

ideas and suggestions

The supply tile: The player may now use the special option, supply, to increase the value of a coal die by +2 (max 6).

hi
yes, once per turn you have an option to +2 your cube (provided you have that marker fullfilled and available as an option)
but that also mean that you cant use any other other function (such as navigator/horse or bring back a coal)

we used the ones that were there first (set at 3 initially and they went immediately down to 1 going over obstacles etc )
did we do something wrong? are the dice supposed to be downgraded and turned from 3 to say 2 after use and then turned to 1 after another use?
so two turns into the game we had value 1 /2 cubes which only pay out 1 plus any bonus, if any at teh receiving end.
it took a few turns to unlock the upper half that is set at 4/5 and we thought it very little money

Thoughts and ideas anyone?
STrategy?

Coal loses only 1 pip for crossing any number of obstacles. It is NOT 1 pip per obstacle.

One needs to read the rule carefully (my emphasis):

If a barge moves over at least one obstacle space, the value of the transported coal die is decreased by 1

This will slow down the degradation of coal in your game I suspect.

the game starts with the black die at 3 pips in lower level, so say it is used the first time (reducing it to 2 over some obstacles) then gets put on the rack/docks
does it come back onto the board at ?? the reduced 2 or ? some other number (say back to 3)

we had the first few deliveries go like this, 3 reduces to 2 . back onto board at 2 and then used again reducing it to 1.
At both levels 2 and 1 you only get 1 coin of value (since 1 cant be reduce to 0)
so we were hurting for cash and not sure if we were moving the dice correctly.
(we did reduce it by 1 for 1 or more obstacles)
It took a bit of effort to unlock the upper half to go exploring and tehn it cost 2 coins to use horse and navigator to get there.

When a die comes back onto the board, it retains the value it had while in the coal track. You can use the +3 progress marker (white) or the +2 progress marker (yellow) to increase the coal value of a die. There are also historical effects (on the turn track) that change die values. There is also at least one water tile/obstacle marker that increases the pip values of dice when you draw it.
