Maybe it's just me, but I really dislike the animated avatars. I think BGG would be better without them.

Almost every browser allows you to turn off animation.

Does Internet Explorer really have this option? It didn't last time I checked.

In Firefox, you need to dig in config files or use an extension. The Web Developer extension has lots of neat features, including the ability to disable image animations. The AniDisable extension provides a simple right click menu option to enable/diable animations.

In Firefox: hit the ESC key to stop GIF animations. Install FlashBlock to stop Flash. (Could have sworn it was a setting, also.)

In IE: Internet Options -> Advanced -> uncheck "Play Animations in Web Pages"

In Firefox, no fiddling with config files (directly anyway) is needed.

In the address window, type 'about:config' as one word with no spaces.
Scroll down to the 'image.animation_mode' setting in the left column and change the value setting to 'once'.

It fixes the avatar problem but does nothing about the adverts, unfortunately.
