The Agents, created by first time game designer Saar Shai, is a table top card game built around a brand new mechanic known as 'double-edged cards'. Each card has two sides - a 'command' on one side and points on the other. When the player plays the card, they decide which direction to play the card - facing either the command or the points towards themselves. The twist is that their opponent gets what's on the other side - will it be a helping hand or a fatal blow?
Though simple to play, the mechanics behind the game are so intricate and complex that Shai enlisted the help of a statistician in his pursuit of the perfectly balanced game. Shai's background in science and technology was key to this unusual process. He recognised that human play testing alone would not provide a sufficiently large pool of data with which to fine tune a game with so many variables. Only a bespoke computer algorithm, that could test the game tens of thousands of times could help him find the perfect harmony of commands, point values and interactions to create the perfect game.
In pairing with Tel Aviv based statistician Ofir Shukron, Shai became the first game designer to use such advanced scientific modelling in the field, paving the way for future game designers. By developing this new method of testing and constructing a game, Shai has produced a game so straightforward and exciting to play, you'd never guess what complex science lies beneath.
Shai will be raising funds to put the game into production, on Kickstarter. The project is live as of 9th July 2013.
