I was being tongue-in-cheek with the post title...Still, I really can't stand the majority of the music on the billboard Top 100 charts. It's all completely mindless trash that sounds the same.

Bemoaning the youth of today and how it was better in my day, why I like a tune I can whistle to. Ohh music today it's just all, noise. And the price of peas today, ohh it's terrible. Young people don't now how lucky they are, Ohh not like in my day. Why we only had 128K and thought we were lucky if we had that. When I was....

I suspect that could be said about the "billboard Top 100" at any instant in history.

Doesn't mean there isn't some good stuff buried in there somewhere...

(especially the '40s? '50s?) (no, I'm not that old)

My problem with "today's music" is that, for the most part, the superstars involved don't play any instruments.
They sing and dance while actual (in many cases) anonymous musicians or computer generated sounds do the musical work.
Give me a group-- a band-- even if the singer doesn't play an instrument; they are a unit and the singer probably does most of the writing.

It is a much older problem, of course.
Take the Spice Girls, for instance. I actually enjoy many of their songs but none of them knows how to do anything but sing and twirl in a choreographed routine while wearing tight clothing.

I could be wrong but Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber are along the same as the Spice Girls. More worried about style and "moves" than the songs.
(I think maybe Gaga writes songs, at least.)

They need to make a Top 100 5 years after the year in question. Many times the songs that have held up are buried a bit, and some of the most popular songs in a particular year burn out quick. Don't believe me? Go back to a year that you think had good music, and look at the trash that's in the top 10.

People were saying lots of the same things about the music of Beethoven when he was alive. Beethoven was a populist composer of his day and controversial.

This doesn't mean the world is ending. It just means you're developing taste earlier than your peers.
