I'm somewhat surprised that there are no PbF games for this. The system seems to lend itself well to the style of games that work well with PbF.

I'm curious if no one's felt the attempt worthwhile, or if it's a lack of resources (Vassal?) or if there are legal reasons.

Anyone know why this might be? If there's no real reason besides lack of desire, then I'd like to put something together and would be most grateful for any suggestions on how to start putting this together.

A PBF game of this would be pretty cool, but without a VASSAL module it would take some effort.

It would be easy enough to set up the custom dice using the BGG roller (or simply designate a specific face that corresponds to each number 1-6 on a standard die), but movement could be tricky because of the non-uniform spacings and alignments.

Short of creating and posting a whole new image every single time something moves, you'd need to come up with a clear and consistent way to describe every movement taken during a turn.

Maybe assign a number to each space on a board?
Example: "Collin moves from space 32 to 25 to 24 to 11, then attacks the Rat in space 6".

For movement, if each player has an image of the map, we can always just have them add a glaring X to where they move and re-upload the map.

This game, as most other PbFs, would require a moderator to make sure the game goes smoothly and to keep everything tied together well. The true beauty of some of the PbF games here on BGG, though, is the uniformity of PbF game systems that have been developed (Arkham, BSG, Descent) that allow uniform moderation. My first goal is to get a game going that I would moderate, but my larger goal would be to facilitate a uniform Moderation system that helps others moderate games and increase the play of the game in general. I'm not great with developing spreadsheets for PbF moderation that automate many of the tasks, and am hoping that others will jump in at that point.

As it is now... I'm alright with Gimp and could probably create a good template for the board, story board, and tokens at least.

Anyone have experience with creating custom dice on BGG? If not, that's where I'd likely start; otherwise, I could focus on something else first.

I know we can just use a die script, and if the custom dice is too cumbersome a project, that's the route we'll take, but... I'd prefer actual dice

While that would certainly work, it could end up inadvertently excluding some players. A lot of people aren't comfortable with using image editing programs (even paint), and some have a hard enough time just getting the UBB code (like quotes, colored text, etc.) to work correctly. Making it a requirement will also slow games down while players create new images.

More "advanced" players could certainly still do that, but some sort of easier universal system would be better in general.

Taking a plain image of each tile and assigning each space a number would make it quick and easy for the players. All they'd have to do is list the spaces they're moving through, and then periodically (when minions need to move, or once at the start/end of each round) the moderator can post a fancier updated image showing the current locations of everything.

I moderated the first (and so far only) PBF game of Merchants & Marauders a while back, this was the custom die we eventually came up with for that:

Custom6{1;2;3;4;[microbadge= 17763];[microbadge= 17763]}
(Paste it into the "roll" box of the BGG die roller, and remove the spaces after the equal signs of the microbadge text)

Yeah, that's doable. Ideally, I'd love to have dice such as those they use for the Decent games (obviously with M&M icons), though.

Seems like if someone went in and scanned the game boards and then used an image editor to add numbers to the spaces (a la Small World PBF) then everyone could consult those images in a post from the tile change and give their moves numerically.

I'd recommend whoever wants to do this shoots an email to Jerry and Colby at PHG to get their blessing. I don't want to see a small company get their IP ripped off on BGG unless they OK it.

I'm working on dice rolling now. The current solution allows us to roll up to 7 dice. I'm not really happy with the look of the outcome, but it works.

Here's what I'm doing for those who aren't familiar with forum dice rolling (Like I wasn't 45 min ago):

When you post a reply, look where all the buttons are above the subject box. 1 says "Roll" (it's near where you add al link, "URL")

The "Roll" dialogue box comes up and asks for 2 things, "Roll" and "Comment"

In the Roll box, put this without the space before any of the equals signs and place it on a single line:

The number before "Custom" is the number of dice rolled.

Testing Tiles
Abilities:
- Accurate Shot - 2mb - Use before ranged attack, defender rolls -2 def dice.
- Aimed Shot - 1mb - Use before ranged attack, +1 to ranged attack.
- Backslash - 1mb - Use w/sharp weapon, after defeat minion, attack again (1/turn).
- Battle Leader - 2mb - After turn, switch initiative card with mouse higher on track then it takes a turn.
- Battle Squeak - 1mb - +1 to melee attack.
- Chain Lightning - 3mb - Max targets = Lore, Roll 3 dice for ranged attack, def. separately.
- Cure - ?mb - For each cheese, remove 1 poison wound from a mouse on same space. Max=3.
- Dodge - 1mb - Use after any figure(incl. this one) ends move, move 2 spaces.
- Energy Rush - 2mb - After taking an action, take another action. Use once.
- Feint - 2mb - If minion moves into your space & you have 2+ weapons equipped, attack it.
- Find - 2mb - After successful search, draw 3 cards take 1, shuffle other 2 back in deck.
- First aid - 2mb - Remove wound marker if same space. Healers, -1mb cost.
- Fortify - 2mb - All mice on this tile get +1 def until next turn.
- Give Order - 1mb - Instead of moving, mouse on same tile takes 1 action.
- Inspire - 2mb - Until end of round, mouse can use 1mb to make 1 addt'l action (only once).
- Invisibility - 1mb - Until next turn you can't be attacked, minions don't stop on your space.
- Keen Eye - 1mb - Use before search, success except on roll of cheese.
- Knife Strike - 2mb - Skip battle action, attack once with each knife or dagger equipped.
- Major Heal - 2mb - Action. Remove 1 wound from 2 mice, or 2 from 1 on same space or adj.
- Meeps - 1mb - Until next turn, place Meeps under minion on same tile, it rolls 1 less def die.
- Mystic Blast - 2mb - Pick space in LoS. All figs def separately against 2 die attack.
=2 hits.
- Mystic Bolt - 1mb - Attack minion on same tile w/ranged attack w/Battle Value = Lore.
- Power Shot - 3mb - Double Battle value on ranged attack (after bonuses).
- Preemptive Shot - 1mb - When minion is placed, use & make ranged att. on 1 of those minions.
- Protect - 1mb - Until next turn, all mice on same space
=2 def not 1.
- Resolve - 2mb - Use before rolling to defend, add 2 defense dice to that roll.
- Set Trap - 2mb - Pick init. card. All figs on their next turn roll 1 die. On
or
fig cannot move/attack.
- Thundersqueak - ?mb - Use w/blunt weapon, ? = # of minions. All minions on same space are attacked.



Search Cards:
Treachery:
- Abduction - Play immediately, this mouse becomes captured & can only be rescued when a fellow mouse makes a successful search action.
- Moldy Cheese - Play immediately. Remove all cheese from this mouse's stash.
- Poison Cheese - Play immediately. This mouse receives a poison wound counter.
- Shriek Bug - Play immediately. Roll a number of dice equal to this mouse's lore. If the number results total 3 or less, add 2 rat warriors to the tile on any minion entry space and add their card to the initiative track if necessary.
- Stolen Cheese - Play immediately. If there is a scamp in the party, remove 2 cheese from this mouse's stash unless this mouse is the scamp. In that case, add 2 cheese to this mouse's stash instead.
- They Know We're Here - Play immediately. Place this card face up near the encounter deck. The next time you reveal an encounter card, place all non-ranged figures on that card in spaces adjacent to the mice.

Fortunes:
- Cheese Cache - Play immediately. Each mouse on this tile gets 1 mb.
- Plans Revealed - Play immediately. Move the Hourglass marker back 1 page if possible. Reshuffle into deck.
- Rest Spot - Play immediately. If there are no minions on the board, remove all woulnds from all mice, then add a cheese to the wheel.

Single-Paw Weapons:
- Clawbiter (Sharp, Before attacking, spend up to 3 mb. for each mb spent, add 1 to battle value. 3 lore only)
- Collin's Sword (Sharp, +1 Melee. Warrior only)
- Dagger (Sharp, Minions lower on Init Track have -1 def.)
- Needle Rapier (Sharp/Melee, +1 Melee, When rolling defense, this mouse may spend 1 mb to add 1 def die. Warrior/Scamp/Archer only)
- Scorching Wand (Magic, +0 Ranged, Battle value = lore. Mystic or Healer only)
- Slicing Dagger (Sharp, For each mb rolled when attacking, give 1 mb to a chosen mouse)
- Sorrow Blade (Sharp, After attacking, if any
were rolled, this mouse gets 1 wound)
- Swinging Whip (This mouse may move across water or mousetraps as if they were normal spaces)
- Throwing Daggers (Sharp, +0 Ranged. Warrior/Scamp only)
- Tilda's Mace (Blunt, +1 Melee / wounded mouse same space. Tilda only)

Dual-Paw Weapons:

- Acorn Helmet (Wearer cannot be stunned Warrior/Healer only)
- Lucky Skullcap (+1 Lore, Discard to ignore all hits from an attack. Mystic/Scamp/Healer only)
- Thimble Helm (+1 Defense, When this mouse draws a treachery card, discard it and draw again. Warrior only)

Body Armor:
- Fishscale Armor (+1 Defense, +2 on water, When Brodie Chases, he will chase to the space with this mouse first. Warrior/Healer only)
- Leather Breastplate (+1 Defense, Warrior/Healer/Tinkerer only)
- Shifting Cloak (+1 Defense, If all hits are blocked, place this mouse on any normal space on the tile. Mystic/Scamp only)
- Tattered Threads of Reason (Pick any ability and upon equipping this cloak, you own that ability until you unequip. Use once per campaign.)
- Walnut Shell Breastplate (+1 Defense, When attempting to leave water, +1 die to do so. Warrior/Healer only)

- Heroic Sacrifice (If fellow mouse receives wounds and would be captured, discard to ignore all those wounds and instead, capture this mouse. Remove all cheese from the wheel.)
- Intense Cowering (Discard to avoid being attacked by minion, it must choose new target if possible)
- Tail Link (Discard instead of battle action when another mouse shares your space to defeat a minion in that space. Does not work on large or boss minions.)
