If I'm not mistaken, placing the tower markers in a row on the board (and moving that row about) serves absolutely no purpose. Right?
Each player could simply keep his tower in front of him and put in on a wonder when his turn comes around.
Then why bother with the "row shuffle"?

It does help in remembering whose turn it is, especially after scoring a wonder.

Just keep your column on the board until your turn is over. Then go clockwise. No problems.

I think the point is that the play need neither be clockwise or counter-clockwise.
In a 5 player game you could jump to whatever order you choose.
The practicality of this is more annoying then functional though.
