I'm curious which factors affect your board game purchases. Here's a simple poll to find out:

Clarification on "BGG Ranking": Is the game's rank on BGG important to you? Other items such as pictures, reviews etc. are excluded.

Clarification on "Game Mechanic": Is strong game mechanic(s) important to you?

Clarification on "Language Dependence": Is the use of text and amount of text in the board game important to you? My mother-in-law is not English literate, and when it comes to board games, we have to look for language independent games to play with her. Another example is Agricola, where some gamers may find the extensive use of text on the cards offputting.

Clarification on "Scalability": Is it important to you that the game plays well with different number of players? For example, with Dominant Species, some gamers believe it plays better with fewer players, though it can be played by 2 to 6 players.

That's still ambiguous. Does a high number mean that it's important that:
1) the game does have text
2) the game does not have text
3) any text just not be in a foreign language
4) the game be easily playable, even if there is any foreign text

Almost every game I have played and purchased based on a high BGG ranking I've either found so dry, crusty and boring, that I can't bring myself to play it more than a few times.

Either that, or I just plain hate it.

This is why I've stayed away from games like Agricola, and I'm really weary of Terra Mystica. Even though I still find it intriguing for the theme alone.

I find if I pick the games with a lot of hate on BGG, I enjoy them more. It's likely me preferring the Ameritrash, and games that have some or are almost all luck.

I say no thanks to brain burners. gulp

Some of these don't distinguish the direction.

For example, I'm a LOT more likely to want a longer game than
a shorter one - so I rated playtime as high. Similarly with language
dependence; the games I like most have to be written in the language
to be played in - or at least translated.

Scales to multiplayer players.
So Chess is not scalable at all, it plays two and only two.

Ricochet Robots is highly scalable as it plays 1-10 (and honestly there is nothing keeping you from playing with more than ten)

Game mechanic I think means "I bought this because I want card drafting, or worker placement or auction."

When I read it though I voted on it as if "This game has good mechanics."
Since mechanics are the most important aspect of a board game to me, I voted ten, but if it's meant to be "buying a game for a specific mechanic", my vote would be a 0.

I would argue the direction doesn't matter. What he is getting at is whether you care about language dependency or not, and whether you care about playtime. In both cases it appears you do.

Certainly how I answered it.

I'm just always concerned that someone will take other information,
