I was reading some of the comments here on the Geek, and realised that the rules are missing something - a warning!

The game was designed to be balanced in favour of the Lurkers, with the Space Marines having no more than about a third chance of winning the game. This may seem harsh, but in the Warhammer 40,000 background (in which the game is set) a "Death World" like the one they're fighting on is supposed to do pretty much what you'd expect: it kills everyone. Even Space Marines have a hard time, though the fact that they stand any chance at all is something of an acolade to their toughness.

Unfortunately, when I wrote the rules I had my head in a GW mode, and forgot that this wouldn't be obvious to everyone. Mea culpa.

So, when you play this, remember that it isn't unbalanced because it's broken, it's unbalanced because that's the challenge! Like some of the old Space Hulk missions, which were all but impossible, or the "Code 7" adventures from the Paranoia RPG (if anyone else remembers those), the lopsidedness is what makes it fun. Swap sides and play it both ways. Like a game of Battle Cry, or Memoir '44, keep a running total and see who gets the most kills over the two games if you want a "fair" game.

Above all, enjoy yourselves

Re: hard for the marines - But possible!
Just played for the first time tonight: thanks for posting the boards and rules, Hulkskulker! We had five games; twice I played as the Marines, twice as the jungle and then again as the marines.

In the first four, the jungle one, and we began to wonder whether it was possible (two of them were relatively close, with the drop-pod being placed, but not reached). But in the last game, the sargeant made it to the pod, and survived a final ambush!

I just wanted everyone else to know that it is certainly possible to win as the Marines. Difficult, but possible.

But it is definately a fun game. And relatively short: we played all five games (with time in the middle to make guacamole) in around two hours. That included learning the rules. A good time.

Thanks very much for the comment, Jake! Many people start into a game expecting everything to be "fair"- an entirely subjective concept which has no basis in reality. Just a suggestion- could GW put Lost Patrol on their Specialist website as a download? Or maybe Fantasy Flight could pick it up under their new agreement with GW? I admit I haven't even played the game- I just found out about it 30 minutes ago here on BoardGameGeek- but given the overwhelmingly positive comments, you designed a real winner of a quickie game here. The more people who know about it, the more people can enjoy it. And of course, the more good karma you get so you can come back as an even mightier gamer in your next incarnation! Thanks much!

Personnaly, I prefer a more balanced game. It's more challenging for both players.
Here is a simple solution to restore the game balance : the lurker gets only 2 actions instead of 3.
In this way, the lurker can still launch a massive attack, but it takes more time to prepare.

It would be great if it was a third. As it stands, the game is statistically unwinnable against competent genestealer player. Unwinnable as in zero chance.

To be fair, all of the other comments in this thread are referring to the original pre-2016 version, which was still very hard for the marines, but at least winnable.
