Whilst at PAXAUS I saw a flyer for this games con (4-6 Oct 2013).
The website did not give much info; does anyone know anything about this event (size, games played etc)?

Thankscool

All reality is a game. Physics at its most fundamental, the very fabric of our universe, results directly from the interaction of certain fairly simple rules, and chance... (Iain Banks)

Unicon is mostly roleplaying, but there are a range of other games. I'm afraid that I don't know much about the arrangements for this year. It was originally a collaboration between RPG clubs at Monash and Melbourne Universities, hence "Uni-con". It started out as "Capricon" at Monash.

I believe Random Jones is the principal organiser at present, but I don't have an email I can share. A message sent via the webmaster at http://aon.arsimagica.net will certainly get to the organisers of Unicon - aon is owned by one of the original Capricon organisers.

If you are interested, check out http://conquest.asn.au/ and http://arcanacon.org/ too! We'd love to see you.

The Unicon 2013 website (http://www.unicon.asn.au/2013/) is live and includes their timetable along with associated costs.

Based on previous history and it's lack of strong following from the board games community, Euro Games Fest (Melbourne) will run as usual on the Sunday of that weekend. We just don't have a large crossover between those who would frequent Unicon and those who regularly attend our gathering.

It is not for me to be their promoter and where in some years we tried to move our gathering across, our people did not follow.

a shame for everyone, I reckon.
The hobby should be promoting itself and recruiting

I think it's harder for board games to be at an RPG event (than it is for RPG to be at a board game event).

As an eg, Unicon's pricing strucuture charges you $2 when you walk in the door and $7 per session (each session goes for 3 hours each).

So to have open gaming, you'd either have to charge $7 for 3 hours of open gaming or have Unicon agree to have open gaming free (which would impact their revenue, which all goes towards paying for the event).

The board game conventions charge a flat fee for entry, if you walk in and play one game and walk out, you're going to pay the same amount as someone as someone who plays for 12 hours of gaming.

NSEG and EGF (which are on the Sunday) run for 8 hours each and cost $3 and $4 respectively. I don't really think it's in UniCon's interest to have board game clubs there and unless a board game club has a strong RPG contingent it's not worth them going to Unicon.

Our event, Meeplecon is on the same weekend as Sheepcon. I don't think there's going to be much cross over/clashing.
