Here we go again!!!!

I've been having a great time reading about everyone's experiences playing these challenges, so I first want to thank everyone for trying them out and for having fun with such a great game!

This week I wanted to respond both to the poll from last week, which named Apocalypse as the Villain this week, and the fact that X-Cutioner's Song ranked pretty highly on the poll from the week before. I know that X-Cutioner's Song was really Mr. Sinister, but since he was impersonating Apocalypse I think I can let that one through.

Apocalypse is obviously pretty challenging as he stands, so I'm not going to modify him at all.

For more details on participating, please check out last week's Challenge HERE!!!!!!

Thanks everyone!!!

You didn't indicate who to use as the extra hero in the villain deck so I randomly chose Nightcrawler.

Game 1 3 players Evil Won

Game 2 2 Players Good Won
Player 1:34
Player 2:22
Extra Character: Rogue ( We started playing this earlier before NC was announced. I might go back and do it with him.)

I loved the combos in this one. Bishop, Iceman, and Wolverine's Draw a card ability helped me (P1) gain many combos and kill Apocalypse 3 times.

This was my first week so I'll have to go back and do the other weeks.

Re: Weekly Challenge Number 3!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~X-Cutioner's Song/Apocalypse
I have to say I really don't like the villain synergy on this one. In a two player game it wasn't so bad and we even dodged having to KO heroes on one of the tactics. However, you could easily lose outright with more players just from Apocalypse's tactics and with no practical way to avoid it.

In general I don't like the design of Apocalypse's reshuffle tactic since it can cause a loss with no way to stop it other than to attack more and get lucky. In our first game we would have had to defeat Apocalypse at least two more times in order to win (8 defeats total), which is nuts.

Just to give an idea why I really dislike the reshuffle mechanic, about 8% of the time you'll have to defeat Apocalypse 9 or more times. IMO this is basically impossible for most setups. Even though that doesn't seem like a very common occurrence, consider that rolling a 1 on a D20 happens less often (5%). Basically I think this tactic makes the game too random.

Re: Weekly Challenge Number 3!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~X-Cutioner's Song/Apocalypse
Hi Slacks,

I feel ya. I get that he is supposed to be tough or whatever, but the very first time I played against Apocalypse I drew the reshuffle card four times in a row. It wasn't very much fun at the time, but I decided I'll only use Apocalypse if I'm feeling especially masochistic.

I picked the heroes for this one to give a pretty decent chance against Apocalypse, but also because they fit the story arc, so I'm glad they're at least fun to play together!

I think a good solution would be to set that Tactic aside until another tactic is defeated when it goes off, then shuffle it back in at that point. That still makes him tough, it is just mitigated a bit to allow players to have a little more success. I'm going to give that a shot next time I use Apocalypse outside of the challenge.

Thanks for contributing again!!!

Re: Weekly Challenge Number 3!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~X-Cutioner's Song/Apocalypse
1-Player
Evil Won.

I basically started the game with 8 Nightcrawlers being KO'd from blasted Scheme Twists. They kept attaching themselves to Apocalypse, which is just too hard to defeat in the early game. Managed to hit him twice after getting each Hero's rare card, but his tactic that makes you KO Heroes that cost 1 or more did me in and put me over the 9 Hero limit.

I may try again later, but I need to take breaks between fighting Apocalypse. I have yet to defeat him =/

Re: Weekly Challenge Number 3!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~X-Cutioner's Song/Apocalypse
Third time's a charm.
Solo
First two games were losses. The first game I almost won, but Apocalypse's fight effect KO'd enough heroes for me to lose. I came out strong with Iceman with some Colossus thrown in for extra attack.
The second game was a big loss. There were no Iceman cards at the start, so I had to try a different tactic. I didn't have a chance though as 5 Nightcrawlers soon appeared, followed by a scheme twist.
The third time, I won with 38 points. This time, I used Bishop's abilities to cull out most of my starting cards with some attack help from Colossus.

Iceman was a big factor in this game... lots of ranged so was able to draw lots of cards.
Also saved Nightcrawler elite card from villain early on. Had several hands of 30+ attack.
Had one hand with 36 attack... 2 of 3 of the MM cards were to draw bystanders and put back in deck. laugh

Re: Weekly Challenge Number 3!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~X-Cutioner's Song/Apocalypse
Yeah, Apocalypse just doesn't jive well with this scheme because you can lose the game without a single scheme twist being revealed thanks to that Apocalypse card and Death's escape effect (put just 2 Hero cards on it and it is tougher than A at 13-12).

In my 3-player game, I never even got close to hitting Apocalypse before Death escaped to finish me off with only 3 of the scheme twists doing anything (drew 2 more). His MasterStrike effect is even worse in a larger game too because it is pretty much everyone skips their turn so either someone escapes or a scheme twist hits removing several heroes off villains. It just seems like you have to get incredibly lucky (both Deaths at the bottom, a bunch of the MS very early in the game, perfect draw when you hit A's one tactic that kills a couple of 1+ cost heroes, etc) at 3+ players to even have a shot at this combo. He's just too brutal for this scheme.

1-player, advanced solo rules
Game 1: Good wins! 38 points
Extra character: Jean Grey (she was in the lineup, and made narrative sense as well)

Edit: ok, just realized in reading others replies, I played with Mr Sinister, not Apocalypse. Oops! I'll try it again with Apoc and Nightcrawler.

To confirm if you are playing solo since there are no horsemen Apoc can't win using his win condition, correct? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Also it appears at least one of his schemes is gimped without the horsemen.

Yep, but I wanted to Gimp him a little bit. He doesn't have the Four Horsemen in Solo Mode, so he can only win with the Scheme Victory Condition. I figure this gimpage makes up for that stupid Tactic of his that can make you redraw it... over... and over... and over.... angry

Cheers!!!!

Yeah that is totally understandable. I wanted to incorporate X-Cutioner's Song because it was highly requested, so I figured Mr. Sinister impersonating Apocalypse is close enough I look forward to hearing about your next game!!!!

Re: Weekly Challenge Number 3!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~X-Cutioner's Song/Apocalypse
Actually, game 2 could not have gone much better!

Game 2, Advancd Solo: Good wins, 42 points!

I pulled Apocalypse's "If this is not the final tactic..." Card twice mid game, resulting in 12 bystanders. Thankfully, I only had 2 out of 2 non-greys on "The End of All Things", because that put me at 8 heroes KOd. But I pulled an insane 44 attack points (teleports and "draw a card" plus Bishop's rare) on my last turn, taking out the last two MM tactics and two city villians to boot!

Mind you, my normal skin-of-teeth, 7 Twists drawn.

Game 1 was a close call. I was fairly certain I was going to lose from early in the game. I quickly had 5 Nightcrawler cards on Apocalypse buffing his stats. A Scheme twist later I was over half way to losing. I recovered enough to think I might pull off the tie, but thanks to Iceman and the outrageous number of ranged hero cards I had, I managed to pull it out in the end with only 3 cards left in the villain deck and 7 heroes KO'd.

Game 2 was pretty easy comparatively. I ended up with 4 KO'd heroes. The Rare Nightcrawler card rocks!

Really good game for my son and I. We beat the last Apocalypse with only 3 villains left in the deck. I was able to save Nightcrawler several times and used his telport ability for great attack value. Good stuff!!
