I had been wanting to introduce our neighbors, a retired couple, to some euro-games for a good while so we had them over for dinner and a bit of gaming. The husband's background in game playing, since he was from Singapore, was playing lots of Mah-jong. I decided we should start with Quandary since the game might have some tactile appeal to a Mah-jong player and I thought Quandary was a good way to introduce people to the simple elegance of many euro-games. We played one practice round and then the four of us played four rounds. During one of the rounds my wife was going to get a large score in one color but I ended up zeroing it out. So in the last round she decided she wanted to keep her acquired Quandary tiles a secret and hid them away. Like an arms race, everyone else did the same which I think does away with some of the scheming aspect of the game and replaces it with a more guessing/memory aspect. Our neighbor's wife had a decent lead going into the fourth round but our neighbor's husband pulled out a one point victory in the end. I believe everyone enjoyed the game and whetted everyone's appetite for our next game, also a tile related game, Ingenious.
