We did our first session of Pirates vs. Dinosaurs this Weekend.
The Setup was quite fast, even though we didn´t know the rules that well (first session issue). So we had no tactical approach on choosing the Artifacts and the Mates. After equipping the crew the situation was like this:
Player 1(Firepower): Cannons, Supplies, Capo Ferro`s Dagger
Player 2(ReRoll): Machete, Parrot, Queen Annes`s War Banner
Player 3 (Digger): Rope, Shovel, Scallywag`s Compass
Everyone chose Pistols and Pikes.
So we went off and quite soon ReRoll took the lead. He searched at a fast pace and had look to be often in areas of the island, where noone could attack him.
Firepower performed also quite good, but had his drawbacks with those heavy cannons, which hindered his search for landmarks.
Digger on the other hand ... he did not so good. He lost a lot of crew. Five in one desaster of encounter. He had no luck with landmarks and had finally to take an envoy token, when he was down to two crew.
But after ReRoll found his third landmark and went digging, things sped up. Now it was quite obvious, where Diggers Landmarks could be. But Firepower was a little bit faster, even after a Scout Ahead Card together wis Diggers Compass helped him a lot.
In the meantime ReRoll had a lot of Treasure dug up. Those ReRolls helped him a lot to keep the flow steady. The moment Firepower arrived, he tried to attack ReRoll, but had a hell of a bad roll and got whacked himself.
After that ReRoll left the Digsite, because he had enough and did´t want to get into more trouble.
Firepower got some Curse and was quite tame when Digger arrived.
Both Crews dug up their treasure and that was, when the Shovel shone.
Digger went back to his ship, leaving a lot of treasure behind... all the cheap stuff.
When Firepower finally left the island, becaus he was afraid of taking another curse the score was quite astonishing.
Firepower was third with 27k
ReRoll was second with 35k
Digger was first with 43k
The whole game it looked like Digger was a lost cause.
So even if it looks like your out of the game ... you are not really.
The session was BIG FUN! The Downtime is no problem. We laughed a lot and enjoyed the thematic and funny events.
We tried different approaches and in every stage of the game, another shone. So, sure, if you have no Machete, you search more slowly ... does´nt matter, if you bring your Shovel
I am very, very happy with this game and I think it will hit the table A LOT!
