This is part forty four of Germany's Future Lies East, a series of session reports presenting a play of a campaign game of Avalon Hill's Guns of August.

Weather
The May weather roll is on the Spring row, and the resulting 4 means that the West is clear: full movement allowance, supply path five hexes. But the East will continue to be hampered by Mud: reduce all Movement Allowances by one Movement Point. Reduce the non-rail portion of a supply path to four hexes in the East.

West: Clear
East: Mud

The Central Powers are in the driver’s seat. They march towards victory on every front. Neither side has any interest in naval confrontation. And the Imperial Powers seek to solidify their holdings. Both Empires have significantly expanded their realms. The Serbs have been crushed, even their Allies have larger empires. Only the siege of Antwerp is troublesome. And all the Guns of the Reich train on the enemy there.

The East

There’s not much to do here. Advance, kill what you can and wait. Russia is in a general state of revolution. There’re even rumors that the Tsar and his family have been assassinated. But the Loyalist corps fight on and there’ll be no conquest until Smolensk is occupied. That can not possibly happen this turn.

The units that took Kiev and the R sites attacks the Ru 69Inf from the south at greater than 6:1 cleanly eliminating it. The single stacked units surrounding the Ru 78Inf on the rail to St. Petersburg attack at 4:1 but the defender fights to the death earning a DX. Not that there was any real need for those attacks but that is all the CP do on the front.

The Balkans

As a matter of good practice Florian continues marching the Romanians southward toward the only threat in range.

The Italian Front

The Austrians move to take advantage of the Italian decimation it suffered while attacking the AH positions. Venice would make a nice addition to the Emperor's conquests.

With that in mind a Big Push attack is made against S22. With a defending cavalry the Italians are so weak that the Austrians manage a 3:1. If the 224 Cav had been a 243 Infantry the 35 attacking factors would be at the much riskier 2:1. The battle is swift and violent, with the veteran Austrians engaging the Italians at close range. The resulting DX gives them the road to Venice once again, but this time it’s well defended.

The West

Almost all of Germany’s might is concentrated in maintaining the liberty of Belgium. Every type and size of artillery is massing in and around Antwerp. The offending French salient southeast of the city is the lone threat to the Kaiser’s dream of an expanded Reich at peace. Reinforcements continue to rail in from the east. Ammunition is stockpiled for large scale attacks.

Tired of losing the salient hex every few turns the German commander decides to not only attack the threat but to also make retaking the hex more difficult. First the Germans attack the now lightly defended hex at K10 southwest of Liege. At 6:1 with artillery support it’s no battle but a slaughter.

Next the more heavily defended, newly re-acquired hex south of Antwerp becomes the focus of a really big Big Push attack. At 48:16 this 3:1 enjoys a +2 for artillery. A straight DE results in fat ladies all over the land warming up their vocal chords. There is no need for further bloodshed. “Please accept our honorable terms” is the message. “Your lands are whole, our vengeance satisfied”, to which there is no reply.

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

Thanks for keeping up with these session reports!

What do you think the Kaiser(s) will demand in the way of reparations this time?

If I was the Kaiser, I would demand the Allied player to supply the Kaiser with beer until the end of a forthcoming rematch.
