We played our first Civ game in a more than a decade after finding a second-hand copy recently.

Its was a 6 player game and we found ourselves in the situation where most of us had too many tokens in our Treasuries but couldn't work out how to get rid of them.

There were no Gold cards left because everyone had already bought them and were holding them trying to make sets. You can obviously buy a few extra boats but that only accounts for a few Treasury tokens.

I can't remember having this problem when we played originally. Are we doing something wrong?

Are you not using them to buy civilization cards?

That seems like the most likely answer.

Cheers,
Merric

Ahhh that would be it then. We thought you could only use resource cards to buy Civilization Cards (and that money needs to be converted to gold cards first).

In the Gibson Edition Rules the section is actually called "Exchange of Trade Cards for Civilization Cards". I see the (single) sentence now where it says "He may include Tokens from his Treasury to make up the value needed".

Thanks Merric.

One thing we used to do was to let the boats lapse and then build them fresh. It cost more then just maintaining them. It is a limited solution, but Merric already had the more obvious one.

Ooh a little higher, now a bit to the left, a little more, a little more, just a bit more. Oooh yes, that's the spot!

But it is an excellent solution for tweaking your treasury. Having four ships and scrapping 1-4 of them and rebuilding them is very, very useful at times.

Don't forget the advantage of the "Coinage" civilization card which lets you control the tax rate. It can be either 1, 2, or 3 tokens per city. All cities must use the same tax rate.
