I has an iPad. It's assigned to me for my job so I can't do anything too wonky to it, but I can take it home and install just about whatever I want on it.

Since my last iOS experience was a iPhone 3G a few years ago I'm a little lost what to do with this thing. I have a few games installed, but I know there's some actually useful stuff I can do too. So, without spending a fortune on iTunes, what should I be putting on the iPad?

(It's a Retina display model if that helps at all)

I have one, but I prefer the Logitech keyboard case thingy and they don't play together.

It's pretty much a game machine at our house. There are some good non-game apps if you like learning stuff but that's also what the interwebs are for.

If you are a netflix, hulu, Pandora user, their apps are very convenient on the iPad.

Gamewise, there's a bunch of excellent boardgame ports out there.

Current Favorite other games include Minecraft PE, Junk Jack, Tiny Thief, Sim City, World of Goo, Beat Sneak Bandit, Plants v Zombies, Lost Winds 2

BTW: If anyone can suggest a game that's similar to Lost Winds for the iPad, I'd love to know.

Finding games isn't proving to be too hard, but suggestions are welcome. Mostly I'm looking for some ways to make it more than a gaming toy.

If you have an HDTV with an HDMI port on the side, you can get an adapter to hook the iPad up to the TV. Note, though, that neither the Netflix nor HBOGo apps will transmit from the iPad via HDMI, but if you're just watching something through the browser (which is how we kept up with the current season of "Downton Abbey"), it will work just fine. Those adapters aren't cheap, though, so if you're not planning on doing that, then it might not be worth the price.

I don't really know what else to tell you. I have one for work, too, but I think that comprises about 1% of my time spent on the iPad.

That seems to be the direction I'm heading. I'll play some games, read some comics and watch videos the other 99% of the time.

Oh yeah, GoodReader is a great PDF reader. That is, in fact, one of my other main uses for the iPad - downloading and referencing board game rules, FAQs, etc. I often read up on rules to new games while eating/on the train/grabbing a beer before game night.

One other thing I have used the iPad for a lot in the past (not quite as much lately) was ripping movies I own to file, then putting them on the iPad. My train commute flies by when I'm busy watching Zatoichi samurai flicks.

oh, it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Such a powerful game.

Anyways, my iPad is primarily a comic-reading device.
