My local neighborhood magazine did a great article about BGG. They put up a full copy of the magazine in PDF, so I copied it over to our server so we don't slam them:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/files/bggarticle.zip

Article starts on page 11 of the PDF.

The original date of the interview was September 2005.

Good story. Presumably the interview was last year.

What does 1/1.5 and 3/2.5 mean in the real estate ads? I'm think of moving to Dallas and those Prairie style homes appeal.

I managed to get them to put the Evening Press article online now:

There were some factual errors in my story this week...

I would imagine (without actually looking at the ads) that those would mean bedrooms/baths. (.5 bath is a bathroom with no tub/shower).

Those are half baths ... meaning it's just a toilet without a shower or tub.

I think Dallas is the last bastion of cheap real estate in an urban area. You can get a lot for your money here.

Too bad it did not make the print version I get, which is the Lake Highlands version, not the Lakewood version. And by the way nice article.

Yeah, but don't you have nearly 3% property taxes?

3%?

I _long_ for the days of 3% property taxes! I live almost an hour outside of downtown Chicago, and pay 5.5% in tax.

And by the way, a 4/1.5 on 1/4 acre cost us 350k. OUCH! Pullin' down 6 fugures and still house poor.

Me too. It's nice that BGG made a Dallas local, but it would have been even nicer to make a national pubication.

I thought the SAME thing

I live in Indy - 3 bedrooms, 1.4 bath, 1/2 acre, 100K - this is for the nice suburb with the good schools and parks and all, too. Indy isn't Podunk either, it's just the REST of you think it's Podunk, so it's cheaper for us

Hahahahahahahaha!!!

$350K is a lot of money? You'd better not look at L.A. property values unless you have an ER standing by to resusitate you.

This is actually why a lot of the debate on the estate tax, income tax reform, and such is so screwed up. Some people are approaching the estate tax from the perspective of $100,000 being a lot of money. Others look at $100,000 and don't see how anyone could afford a run-down condo with that kind of money. The two sides generally talk past each other.

It's tough to come up with a coherent national tax code when the regional variations are literally of an order of magnitude (ten times).

Oh, and congrats on the article. We would have been better off with a piece in the "other" Advocate. Gay couples tend to have two incomes and no kids, thus a lot of disposable income. Aside from an unfortunate obsession with battleship gray in the late 70s-early 80s*, they also decorate nicely. Tends to result in nice neighborhoods.

How did I get back onto real estate values?

*I blame the Village People and "In the Navy."

I, too, thought you were referring to the national magazine. But still, good work. I can't read the article because my zip opener says the file is missing a few thousand bits... or something like that. I tried opening it and saving it and then opening it, but no luck.

Nice article, it was interesting and fun to read. I really like the sidebar with your gateway games, but I have to wonder if Power Grid was a misprint! LOL!! There is no way on earth I'd ever use that as a game to get newcomers into the hobby! laugh

Congrats on the positive press!

Scott

She was asking for some of my favorite games, and it got intermingled with gateway games.

Actually it's cheaper to live in Oklahoma City than Dallas. Less traffic and our Bricktown is far superior to their tired old West End.

A house for sale in our neighborhood offered "3.1 baths". What's .1? A subwoofer?

... in North America, maybe.

You can buy a 4 bedroom house in Invercargill on the South Coast of New Zealand's South Island for US$66,000
