Did anyone else see Stephen Colbert's segment on boardgames "making a comeback" from last night? He designs a board game and even showed his prototype:

http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/42824...

Here's his own description of the game:

"It all takes place in the enchanted realm of Quarteria. Each player has farmers, soldiers, merchants, and bandits, and the object is to cultivate enough grain that the merchants can sell to pay the soldiers to protect you from your opponent's bandits. And of course, there are two giant robots who box."

Sounds awesome.

Sorry about that. Here's a YouTube video telling what people outside the U.S. can do to get around it. I've never tried it, but people seem to be saying it works:

(apologies in advance if this isn't helpful!)

Basically what happened was, he brought out a generic game board that featured a mishmash of pieces from Mouse Trap and The Game of Life glued on, as well as a pair of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, went through a big long explanation of the game, brought out a kid to play with him, and then revealed that the winner of the game was essentially determined by a coin flip.

Essentially? The entirety of the game was a coin flip.

Only cause he flipped the board before the kid got to take his turn. The kid didn't get to move his token to the winning spot.

So Emperor's New Clothes done correctly...

It was fun to watch in context of the rest of that episode.

The players started one space from the finish so the person who went first won, so yes essentially a flip of a coin, then Colbert rage-quit, flipping the board and called the boy a cheater, it was pretty funny.

I like the theme but the setup time is prohibitive and I have to say the luck factor seems high.

Component quality was amazing though, so I give it a 7.

I disagree. I think the theme is pasted on and it's too fiddly for too little payoff

That would be hilarious. It's probably more developed than many PnPs on here (in fact, we all know the rules already!)

His character, yes, but he's hilarious. And brilliant. (and, BTW, a HUGE Tolkien geek, which only makes him greater in my opinion)

So... is this someone who doesn't understand the parody, or someone who does but doesn't think it funny because it makes fun of his tribe...?

I've only personally known two people who hated Stephen Colbert. One hated him because he was a looney liberal, and the other hated him because he was a rabid conservative.

Only a genius could pull that off.

That's good. "Farmers and bandits" etc - somebody on Colbert's show has played something beyond Risk and Monopoly.

Really curious. Got an advert for a company that doesn't exist in my country but played fine for me and I'm not even in the same hemisphere.

Worked for me after I spoofed my headers as per the youtube link. Before that I got a message about the downsides of living under a monarchy and giving up vegemite...
