Hello fellow designers! I am considering a new name for the game I am working on, Legends At War.

Design thread:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/865184/legends-at-war-a-...

I like the current name, but never have been 100% in love with it. There are some other names I've been considering, and of them, "Pagan" stands out to me the most. I may end up changing the name of the game to "Pagan" or "Pagan: Legends At War".

Here's the pros and cons as I see them:

"Legends At War"

Strengths:
- It's descriptive of the game.
- The acronym is great: LAW.
- I've already been using this name for over a year, so there is some existing recognition.

Weaknesses
- There are several video games with similar-sounding names, making Legends At War get lost during a web search: "Legends of War", a WWII game by the History Channel, and "War of Legends" an asian-themed turn-based strategy game.
- It's kind of generic-sounding.

"Pagan"

Strengths
- It's short, catchy, and stands out.
- It fits the theme of the game.
- There aren't other prominent/current board/video games using that name.

Weaknesses
- It is not immediately descriptive of the game.
- In the past, the word "pagan" has been assigned pejoratively towards non-Christian religions. Although there is nothing negative about the word itself, this historical connotation may give off the wrong impression.

So, I'd like to ask you bright people, which of the two do you like better for this game? If neither of the names fit right with you, do you have any suggestions for something cool? Thank you for your help!

Re: Pagan or Legends At War?
Don't do "Pagan: Legends at War" - that just sounds like an expansion to Pagan. I hate that Tooth & Nail: Factions and other games do this. (I really like Small Box Games, the company that makes Tooth and Nail:Factions but for the longest time I put off buying it because I thought I needed the base game - Tooth and Nail - first.)

I prefer "Legends at War" but I've been following the design pretty closely so it could just be because of familiarity. I will say "Pagan" has some serious negative connotation associated with it in my mind.

Why not mix them? Like "Pagan Wars" or something.

Nathan, thank you for the feedback. That is very helpful!

Adam, that's a possibility. Though, to me it sounds too similar to other games, like "Mage Wars" and "Summoner Wars".

I've come to know the game as Legends at War. I'll just get confused if I have to learn a new name for it.

The use of "pagan" to describe religous beliefs is not just a perjorative term from the past. In the present it is used by many people to describe their religous beliefs - it's a kind of umbrella term for a range of earth-based spiritual practises including Wicca, Druidry and heathenry. (You could take a look at the UK based Pagan Federation http://paganfed.org/ for more info. )

To me, titling a game Pagan would be just like calling it Christian, Muslim or Jewish - so I'd say stick with Legends at War.

Re: Pagan or Legends At War?
I personally prefer "Legends at War", when I hear "Pagan" I instantly think of the "Ultima" series (Ultima 7 I believe). Also I've always felt that a game rename just confuses things for people.

Good luck.

Re: Pagan or Legends At War?
Thank you for your perspective, Kim! You're right, the term "Pagan" means multiple things to multiple people. I did some research on the word when I was brainstorming new names for the game. Originally it was used simply to mean "other". And from what I remember, "pagan" literally translated to "rural". Apparently, country-folk in the Roman Empire were much slower to adopt Christianity than the city-folk.
With the rise of neo-paganism, the followers of those beliefs and practices have "flipped the script", proudly embracing the umbrella term which was once used negatively.

Thanks, Damian! Yes, I think it was Ultima 8: Pagan. I was also concerned about the rename confusing people - which was why I was thinking that if it did happen, better now than later.

It seems like support for "Legends At War" is unanimous. LAW it is! thumbsup

Nah, it's an unrelated game. And the title was easy enough to come up with, that I'm not too surprised that someone else came up with the same name.

Back to the name-drawing-board... Any suggestions?

I really need to keep in mind that sarcasm doesn't always translate in writing....

Myths at War?

War of Legends?

Pantheon Battles?

Myths, Monsters, and Mayhem?

Enmity of the Gods?

Godstrife?

Those are some good suggestions, Nate. "War of Legends" is a web game that I know of. I wouldn't be surprised if "Myths at War" is also an existing game title.
"Myths, Monsters, and Mayhem" is fun-sounding, and "Godstrife" sounds cool!

I've come up with a few other names I'm considering too, I'll probably post them after I've had time to think of some more.

Two names I wish I had thought of first:
--------------------------------------------------
"Smite", which is already taken by a mythology-themed MOBA game. Great name.

"Myths & Legends", taken by the English version of "Mitos y Leyendas", a (now dead?) CCG from Chile about... myths and legends.

Still brainstorming, and welcoming suggestions.
