Out of curiosity, I went and looked at the games that people rated a 10 on BGG if they also rated Empires in Arms a 10. Here's the top 20 list of games based on that data (~130 people). I didn't use the data for people who had more than 10 games rated at 10. I rated Empires in Arms a 9 (although I would love to give it a 10), but if I have more time later, I'll extend the data set down to the 9 ratings, too.

#1: Republic of Rome
#2: World in Flames
#3: Advanced Civilization
#4: Diplomacy
#5: Civilization
#6: Puerto Rico
#7: Twilight Struggle
#8: Axis & Allies
#9: Dune
#10: Paths of Glory
#11: War of the Ring
#12: Power Grid
#13: 1830: Railways & Robber Barons
#14: Caylus
#15: Chess
#16: Battlestar Galactica
#17: Here I Stand
#18: Civil War
#19: Pax Britannica
#20: For the People

It's interesting to see games like Power Grid and Settlers on here, along with the more grognardly stuff like WIF. One possible correlation of course is that EiA is most definitely a multiplayer game (not just 2-player like many wargames), and of course euros generally are too.

Yes, that surprised me, as did the appearance of Bridge.

Interesting that there are no other Napoleonic games, and none except WiF that take more than a day.

Yes, only one other epic (WiF). That was a surprise to me, as well.

Re: Napoleonic games, Napoleon's Triumph just barely missed the Top 20 cutoff. I think it would have made a Top 25 list.

Well, Civ and Advanced Civ are pretty long games too, though not in the 'months and months to complete a game' sense...

I wonder if people just really like one big monster game. I know that for me I like a lot of them, but don't get the time to play them.

For me it's EiA followed by The Civil War and Paths of Glory. I also like 1776 and Pax Britannica. These are all games on pretty big scales. But, unfortunately, only Pax Britannica shares the multi-player diplomatic aspect of EiA. I would probably like World in Flames if it had a simpler set of rules, like those in Axis & Allies.

Of the 20 players I have played EiA with, only a handful were into The Napoleonic Era, another handful were into military history, but all were gamers.

The diplomacy element has drawn people who were into roleplaying.

In our Group we get together 4-6 persons and play something else for a single night, when we can´t get all 7 together.
In no particular order: Junta, Robo Rally, Titan, Axis & Allies, Risk and History of the World.
In pairs some play Warhammer and Flames of War.

Players are 25-50 years
