Buy a new copy. Alternately, you could use poker chips, change, etc....

Suggestions:

1) Poker Chips

2) Scavenge from another game, such as St. Petersburg, Monopoly, etc.

3) Get rich and use real $100 bills

I'll third the use of poker chips. You may even find you prefer to use the chips for most games. I know I do.

Nope. The expansion is just an extra map with some rule modifications.

The only problem I can see with poker chips, is it would be harder to hide the amount of money that you have. I have a nice set of poker chips, but I'm hesitant to use them in games where money is supposed to be hidden information.

In games with hidden money, we give a dice box to each player for his chips (but he have small, light ones). Some use it rarely, and keep their chips in their hands most of the time. Some use it for all their money. And players like me only drop the big donations in the box, and keep the small ones open.

I didn't lose the Power Grid bills. I use poker chips anyway. You can normally hold the stack of chips in your hand under the surface of the table, thus keeping the information well hidden.

I use poker chips. One of the guys in my regular group made a very nice set of screens for hiding stacks of chips. For those that would rather use hidden money, this is actually better than having a stack of paper money in plain sight. Screens could be made in seconds from any card stock laying around, or you could go all out and make something beautiful like my buddy Rob did.

Since I started using chips for all games I have also stopped hiding money in games where it's trackable. None of these games has suffered from opening up the money counts and all have benefitted from using chips instead of paper play money.

# edit for clarity

Isn't Rio Grande pretty good about offering replacement stuff ?

If not, I'd have to add another vote in favor of some nice [heavy] poker chips.

Some people use a small bowl from the kitchen or even a cloth bag to keep the values hidden. I can imagine it might be kind of difficult [albeit uncomfortable] to keep holding onto poker chips throughout an entire 1-2 hour game !

You should rejoice that you no longer have them and go buy some poker chips. We play all the time and never have issues with hiding the money - the only way I see this being an issue, is if you only get a few colors and have to hold onto a ton 10's. Even with thick 11g chips, I never have more than I can easily hold (though it does mean that we all tend to sit and make a lot of chip noise).

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I love using money, so I'd go to a thrift store and pick up Monopoly for a dollar or two.

Well, speaking only for myself, there are a couple issues with paper money. People handle it a lot and it gets torn or wrinkled or folded. It only take one play to watch your stack of Power Grid money double in volume. It also tends to stick to itself and it makes it harder to tell if you are giving people the right amount of payout or change. Finally, its just seems to be faster to make change and pass the chips than it does to sort through the paper cash.

Now, having said that, you really have to have 4-5+ different chips and you should stay away from anything small.

1. Buy a Monopoly game
2. Take money out of Monopoly game
3. Place Monopoly money in Powergrid box
4. Throw away the Monopoly game

Problem solved !!
