I recently was looking around on IMDB.com as well as on various other sites for info on horror movies...or more precisely on scary movies. I was wondering what were considered the "scariest movies" by the greatest number of people.

Of course everyone has a different opinion on what constitutes a "scary movie". Some get their adrenalin fix from the blood, guts and gore of the slasher type flicks while others like the more cerebral and "spooky" movies where the scares are achieved by subliminal manipulation and other less ham fisted techniques.

Since there are so many opinions on what the best "Scary Movies" are...I thought I'd search and gather some data and make up a meta list to find which are considered the best at delivering the frights and chills. I used Google to search for and find several hundred sites, discussions and other lists of "scary and scariest movies". I kept a tally of all the movies mentioned and slowly the results started taking shape until a picture grew of what movies were generally considered the scariest by the masses.

I'm putting up the results here as well as I thought others might have an interest in the results and maybe even find them useful in finding some movies they may have never heard of before. Enjoy.

Same here. Plenty of other scary movies on the list but the Exorcist creeped me out the most and stuck with me for quite awhile after that.

Thanks for the great list. I've seen way too many horror films, so they have to be well done in order to scare me. Here are the ones on your list that gave me a good scare:

1.The Exorcist (not as much when I watched it as afterward when I thought about it and slept in my brother's room)

The rest, in no particular order:

The Blair Witch Project
Sixth Sense
Carrie (best single scary moment ever)
The Others (surprisingly creepy)
When A Stranger Calls
Tourist Trap
Henry: Portrait of a Seriaal Killer (almost too realistic)
Burnt Offerings
Ghost Story

The only one I can think of that didn't appear on your list, or I missed it, is The Sentinel.

The Sentinel was rated as scary on 4 lists so it comes in just below those movies that are shown. I used a cutoff of at least 5 as there are over 500 other movies that appeared on 1-4 lists.

Some of the other scariest movies are not that widely known about so this metalist is really a consensus of the scariest and most "well known" movies.

Here's a further continuation of the list with movies that appeared on at least 2 scary movie lists:

What kind of creepy/scary movie list doesn't start like this?!?!

1 Willie Wonka And The Chocolate Factory

I see that The wizard of oz on there. I wasn't afraid of it, but my husband wouldn't let our kids watch that movie for a long time because it traumatized him as a kid. We finally watched it this year, my six year old held his hand during the monkey part.

This would be higher if more people had seen it. Also the sequel to the Eye (The Eye 2) is effective in it's own right.

I'm inclined to agree about A Tale of Two Sisters but I thought the Eye 2 was really weak. I struggled to make it through to the end.

I think the problem with lists like this is that, almost without exception, "scary" movies are not, in fact, the least bit scary.

They're about dumb carbon-based life forms doing violent things to other dumb carbon-based life forms. At least half of them run afoul of Roger Ebert's warning about movies in which all the characters' problems would be instantly solved if all the characters weren't complete morons. And most of the rest are just gory.

Alien is scary--but it's primarily a good story with interesting characters. There are movies I find creepy: Dead Ringers, Dead Calm, John Carpenter's The Thing and Event Horizon, to name a few. But mostly the so-called "scary" movies make me laugh. Sometimes there's a shocker--the life-changing moment when the guy who didn't get held enough as a child and was ridiculed for his poor personal hygiene and became (and really, what else could one become?) a chainsaw-wielding psychopath with a predilection for jumping out from behind trees and chopping up teenagers just as everyone in the audience over age 10 or IQ 10 decides that maybe being boiled in lava, hurled into space and eaten by a giant interstellar monster named Steve could be fatal and therefore there really won't be a sequel this time.

Aren't most of the "scary" film moments the cinematic equivalent of someone suddenly unloading a ferociously loud and unspeakably wet fart right behind you?

Finally, I must say at the risk of being booted from whatever sort of club would boot me for saying the sort of thing I'm about to say: The Blair Witch Project was the single lowest point in the history of cinema, the moment at which the excruciating collective weight of all the dung that moviemakers have piled upon the innocent finally collapsed the very fabric of space and time and caused a massive fecal pile to collect at the sagging center of the broken universe. Lo, the Blair Witch was born, and lo it taught me to hate.

Then again, there was absolutely nothing wrong with that movie that could not have been fixed by having every single character tortured to death in the first few seconds.

I think scary is when the regular things in life threaten you and you are powerless.

In Texas Chain Saw they pick up a guy hitch hiking because they are friendly hippy sort of people. But he is a nutter and you can't avoid them as like most of them he appears normal for the first 5 minutes.

How many of us have spoken to someone who initially appears ok but then the switch flips. Or you find yourself singled out for treatment by the drunk in the street.

thats scary.

Aaron, I agree that many "scary" movies are uninspired and not intelligently made. Maybe horror is the genre with the worst bad apples, but there are some great movies in that group.

I get the impression you didn't care for the Blair Witch Project. What did you dislike about it to have such passion against it? I'm just curious because it's generally regarded as one of the better horror movies.

Tim, I hated The Blair Witch for many reasons (and my wife did, too). Among them:

1. The hand-held camera work was not "edgy", it was nauseating. They could have strapped a camera to a dog and gotten better footage.

2. I immediately hated all the characters and wanted--desperately wanted--them to die horribly.

3. The characters were all idiots, far too stupid to feed, clothe and bathe themselves, much less organize a filmmaking expedition.

4. The "snot cam".

5. Nothing scary happens. There are some noises. There are some small objects moved around. There is a guy who, for all I cared or could tell, was urinating on a wall.

6. They didn't show them being killed, so there was no happy ending.

7. Did I mention that I wanted all the characters to die horribly?

Since it's October and scary season is approaching I thought I'd post the conclusion to this thread by adding the last of the movies that make up the entire list from above. All these following movies appeared on just 1 scary movie list from all the searching I did so there are definitely some obscure titles here. Some I'm sure are only scary to a select few but there are a few great gems in here as well.

Should make for a good selection of movies for Halloween.

I find the most scariest movies ever made are the ones that relate to some situation that we ourselves could stumble into in real life. Being able to put ourselves into the movie that we are watching, because of the possibility that this could really happen and not of the mind that there is no way it could ever happen to us.

Nowadays, film-makers use way too much FX in movies and reveal too much not leaving much if any mystery to allow our mind to attempt to sort things out. Its usually when our minds are busy trying to sort out the last frighten lunge of events that sets the audience up for an even more horrorifing chain of events.

Most modern-day film-makers are only interested in making loads of profits and not too interested in making good flims. Instead of making a really scary horror film, they use clever marketing tactics such as showing only the best parts of the films in their trailers or paying folks to create a false word-of-mouth buzz. The movie "The Blair Witch Project" is a great example of clever marketing of a really terrible movie. How many remember the rumors of "The Blair Witch Project" being based on real events and shortly after the theaters had filled up, then discovered that it really wasn't? Clever and deceitful marketing at its best (maybe they used the same folks that create those used car lot commercials).

The scariest movies that caused many sleepless nights when I was a young'un...(short list):

1. Exorcist (the original)
2. Legend of Boggy Creek (1978 - based on actual events)
3. Rose Mary's Baby (original)
4. The Shining (the original)
5. Phantasm (the first movie)
6. Deliverance (scarier now that I whitewater raft on the same river)
7. The Omen (the original)
8. Children of the Corn (the original)
9. Friday the 13 (Part one and part two)
10. Milo (not really scary, but strangely creepy)
