El Cid - Tragic Hero or Zero?
Ivymane could prove an issue. Mobile, hard to attack in Melee combat, and Team Black had laid down a map heavy in swamp and woods - she had the potential to have a massive contribution in this game for Team Black.
Team White knew something must be done about her if at all possible. But what to do?
Shoot her? With few shooters, her high stealth, and this accursed vegetation (within which she seemed to just disappear), shooting her would be difficult.
Melee? Only two of our team even had the steel to resist the fairy magic and dare to hit Ivymane. Miranda Fade could see through her feminine wiles, but Miranda's attrocious fighting skill would require too much luck given the supernatural reaction speed of the Fay. Then there was the honourable El Cid, who was the only man on our team immune to her malevolent charm. Combat may be an option for El Cid, but how to get anywhere near her? And if he did get near, he would likely have just one opportunity before she ran away. On top of that, with his fists, his chances of killing her in one blow was just too low. A weapon would be needed.
Team White looked at the items in our vault and saw two very interesting treasures. We looked at each other. Could this actually work? We realised the potential of what we had and we would remember this should the opportunity arise.
El Cid came into the arena first. He is a crowd favourite and the other characters are in awe of him. He is used to the rapturous applause by now and had a determined look on his face, clearly focused on his goal ahead. Get weapon if possible, agitate early, get in the enemy's faces and allow the heat of battle to decide his fate as he had so often before. What dome would he enter? Black. no option but to be in a far flung corner of the map, far from the action. But wait, the white base is just two moves away. Very interesting.
While El Cid was scrambling over the rough terrain that lay between his dome and the white fortress, the Black forces started flooding the arena immediately. On the other side of the map Ivymane entered close to her own base which had been positioned conveniently close to Lith's caverns. She had seemingly formulated her plan. Take advantage of her speed to pick up treasure and tribute from the HQ. Who was the treasure for? Herself? A teammate? The tribute situation was a problem, if she could get a headstart in the Lith achievement, this would be devastaing and would leave team White at the mercy of the Lith key powers.
El Cid had made it to his base and managed to pick up a stunning replica of the Mona Lisa (the original of which had been lost many years ago in the crisis.) Then he made a beeline into the vault. He picked up one of the two items and then waited an entire turn on the vault to pick up the other, silently cursing the beurocracy of the team vaults as he got more and more agitated. Time was of the essence here. If he wasted too much time in the base, and then had to walk back out to join the battle, half the match time would be over. He might even miss his chance to take advantage of his unique talent. But he had a secret and so wait he did.
Meanwhile Team White's characters Tomiji Hamaki and Miranda Fade were heading for the Black base. Tomiji had settled for a comfortable plan of bribing the low-gate guard to let Miranda slip in and sabotage the HQ. A plan so simple it couldn't fail. The fact that Ivymane was in there was just the icing on the cake.
Unfortunately, they had underestimated Ivymane's speed. She saw them coming and streaked out of the base and on her way to Lith's cavern so fast that all they saw was a green blur. This would not do at all and the plan needed to be reconsidered - We just needed one more turn.
Miranda gave up on her hopes of sabotaging the black HQ - the bigger plan was just too important. She sprinted for Lith's cavern and only just made it to the entrance before doubling over to catch her breath. This was make or break and she knew it, but she had played her part.
Ivymane saw Miranda blocking her way. She would not be denied entry from Lith's lair and she seethed as she watched the way the bloated human raised her hands clumsily in a defensive stance. She hated the way it looked around wildly with it's big stupid wide eyes, trying to get a fix on the fast moving Fay. Ivymane normally preferred to avoid conflict if possible and her fighting prowess reflected the lack of experience. But she was mad and it was inconceivable that this slow moving human would even touch her anyway so she ran straight at Miranda. Miranda managed to duck away at the last moment but was thrown off balance and her already mistimed karate chop missed the speeding green mosquito entirely.
Finally, the moment that El Cid had been waiting for had come. He picked up "The Chopper" from the vault. A massive, machete style blade, it had apparently been designed for zombie killing but was too slow. He wondered if his expertise with blades would give him the edge he needed to disect a fairy. We would see. Now El Cid did something entirely unexpected. He pulled out the first treasure that he had tucked into his cloak and looked at it. It was a small white cube. He smiled, took a deep breath and depressed the button embedded on one side of the object. The white base walls around him blurred, flickered, and then with a high-pitched crackling sound the white around him changed to green and black. As the colours started to come into focus he could make out a new landscape. The black formed into a dark cavern mouth, and on the other side the green blur became a rolling green landscape littered with swamps and trees. He saw two figures before him and nodded to the first. Then he turned on Ivymane.
Ivymane crumpled to the ground. As she fell she pondered the fact that in the entire history of the games, she was the first contestant to ever be killed by being swatted by the flat side of the chopper. Ultimately the same speed that had been such a boon had also bought about her demise as she had sprinted full speed into the side of the large blade.
The victorious (and slightly bemused) El Cid went on to deliver the precious painting to Lith. He then had just enough time to pass a Lith challenge that he had mysteriously received after using the cube. It gained White an extra character which secured the combat acheivement beyond a doubt. With the Fay out the way, Black was on a downward spiral and ended up losing the match four achievements to three.
El Cid blocked one achievement, then secured two. He broke the back of Team Black's game and is awarded MVP!
