We recently moved to Michigan and I needed some shelves for my gaming collection. Half were completed and we were almost done with the rest. I had been having trouble with shortness of breath over the past month and it reached it's peak on Saturday. After walking up a flight of stairs, I was winded to the point where I had to sit for a few minutes, walking down a hallway caused the same reaction. My wife finally said, enough, "we're going to the 24 hour clinic." Reluctantly, I agreed.

The clinic doctor wasn't able to rule out much but did do an ECG (normal). He said my symptoms were such that he was going to order an ambulance and send me to the Heart Center in Grand Rapids. Reluctantly, I agreed.

So we're off in the ambulance headed for the Heart Center. Upon my arrival at the ER I am taken vback immediately and hooked up to the machines. After another ECG and a chest X-Ray I was told I would be admitted and was scheduled for a cardiac catheterization on Monday morning. Now I'm starting to take notice.

No sleep overnight in the hospital, blood work and/or heart monitoring and vital signs check every few hours. Taken into the cath lab early Sunday and the cardiologist performed his magic. Although heavily sedated, I was somewhat alert and had a nice conversation with the nurse (mostly to request the urinal twice). The doctor was having trouble with the first stent he was putting in and after a third time, he muttered something to his nurse and she went out to talk to my wife (he was considering cracking my chest and operating). Finally he was able to place both stents and I went to a recovery room. Two arteries were 90%+ blocked. I rested the remainder of the day.

Today I came home with virtually no restrictions as to my activities. I'm a very lucky man in that this problem was solved before it became a crisis.

And how did board games save my life, you ask? If my wife hadn't pushed me so hard to complete the shelves, my heart may have continued to deteriorate at a slower pace and the consequences may have been more severe in the future.

Don't ever let yourself by the magical power of gaming.whistle

On a positive note, Zombicide arrived today.

That heart stuff is no joke. My grandfather had an angioplasty, then open heart surgery (after two weeks of chest pains), another angioplasty (in South Africa, no less) and now he's under observation for s wonky valve.

Take care of yourself! Glad you were able to get it done before anything major happened.

And people say that all that nagging we women do is for nothing. I don't credit boardgaming, per se, with saving your life, but I'll give credit to your wife for nagging you into 1) finishing the shelves, and, 2) for getting you to go to the Dr.

Never ignore a nagging wife. She just might save your life!

Yowza!

There is a lot to be said for listening to your nearest & dearest when they say you have to go to the hospital.

My mother-in-law & I played this out around Christmas, and the upshot was that they finally fixed some things that had been bothering her for years while they were treating her for the main thing she was in for.

My wife is a nurse and a genius. Just took me a bit of time to remember that.

He's still here because he was clever and chose Monopoly. Chess is a bad game to play against an entity which has played every past grandmaster at a game of their choice and won.

Edit: I have wikipedia on the brain...

According to the experts, you should play Battleship or Twister with death.
