Youngest Daughter received the Silver & Gold Edition cards as a gift. Nowhere on the box does it say anything about it being an expansion nor does it mention a base game of any sort (or # players, or ANY other information whatever, apart from the name & UPC code!)

Before we open it - is this a playable game by itself, or do we need to purchase the base game?

I believe you only have an expansion. The base game contains 6 decks of cards (identical decks with 6 different card backs).
You have an expansion designed to add 2 more players to the base 6-player game.
There's a second expansion (Black & White) which adds yet another 2 players.

Thanks for the info! Guess we'll have to decide whether to pick up the base game or punt..
