Just a few rules question concerning Poverty:

1 - What happens if a Banker encounters Calandrino but doesn't have 10 florins to pay him? Is he forced to take a Stinginess cube?

2 - What happens if a Banker is forced into the Inn by Courtesans but doesn't have enough money to pay them? Does he have to pay as many as he can, and what happens to the remaining one?

We encountered the courtesean issue back in November at Euroquest when we had 18 courteseans on the inn. I wrote the designer, Mario Papini, and he gave me a fantastic response.

Mario,

We were at a gaming convention this weekend and had a chance to learn and play Siena twice; once with 4 and once with 5. The 4 player game was awesome. The 5 player game had one issue; at one point we had 18 Courtesans on the board (Zev was laughing his butt off about that), and no one had enough money to pay 10 each for all the courtesans. In this case, once a player has to stop at the inn, what does one do if you cannot pay for all the courtesans?

Fantastic game, thank you ahead of time,

Dave

Dear Dave

this is the best opportunity that you may have. Not only in my game but also in your life. Being with a woman who wants you, and having not much money with you.
So you can satisfy her paying less.
In the game you'll pay with the money that you have and all the pretty girls will go away anyway, completely satisfied with you.

Have fun with them.

Mario

So, in the end, all the courteseans are cleared from the inn. You do not just remove what can be paid for.

I remember seeing that game in progess at EuroQuest! It was completely hilarious.

It reminded me of the Castle Anthrax scene:

LAUNCELOT: Sir Galahad!
GALAHAD: Oh, hello.
LAUNCELOT: Quick!
GALAHAD: What?
LAUNCELOT: Quick!
GALAHAD: Why?
LAUNCELOT: You are in great peril!
DINGO: No, he isn't.
LAUNCELOT: Silence, foul temptress!
GALAHAD: You know, she's got a point.
LAUNCELOT: Come on! We will cover your escape!
GALAHAD: Look, I'm fine!
LAUNCELOT: Come on!
GIRLS: Sir Galahad!
GALAHAD: No. Look, I can tackle this lot single-handed!
DINGO: Yes! Let him tackle us single-handed!
GIRLS: Yes! Let him tackle us single-handed!
LAUNCELOT: No, Sir Galahad. Come on!
GALAHAD: No! Really! Honestly, I can cope. I can handle this lot easily.
DINGO: Oh, yes. Let him handle us easily.
GIRLS: Yes. Let him handle us easily.
LAUNCELOT: No. Quick! Quick!
GALAHAD: Please! I can defeat them! There's only a hundred-and-fifty of them!
DINGO: Yes! Yes, he will beat us easily! We haven't a chance.
GIRLS: We haven't a chance. He will beat us easily...

And just to stay on topic, I tend to agree that you pay what you can and move on.

Thanks!
Thanks very much!

One more question though - if a Banker meets Calandrino in Duomo, where he doesn't have 20 Florins and can't take a cube because he's in Duomo, what happens then? Does he have to pay all he can, or can he just ignore the beggar?

I think you can give him all your money, and so not to take the cube. How can people give you a Stinginess cube if you give all your money to a beggar?

Mario?

It's the same as for the courtesans.
If you haven't enough money for Calandrino, give what you have. No one can say you are not generous.
