Jekyll Island: A WW Murder Mystery

The concept is to layer on features of a murder mystery party with an online WW game.

This is a beta and may serve as the basis for a larger game in the future.

This game is for 10 players. Due to its beta nature and complexity, I have asked players to join who expressed interest in my previous discussions with them.

Rating: R. For mature audiences only. Content includes adult themes, suggestive scenes, drugs, violence.

Premise: A killer and an accomplice are loose amongst ten players trapped on an island. Can the guests determine the identity and motives of the killer before it is too late?

Game logistics:
N0: Friday, March 10th
Deadline for N0 orders: 9PM Saturday March 11th
Lynch deadline Monday March 13th 3:00 PM
Nighttime Order deadline: Monday March 13th 9:00 PM

I. Game Basics:
In this game there are two sides, the Killer/Accomplice and the Guests. On the evil side, there will be a Killer and an Accomplice, plus potentially auxiliary evil.

A. The object of the game for Guests is to: (1) deduce the identity of the Killers; (2) deduce the motives of the Killer. The Killer and Accomplice know each other’s identities, have PM privileges, but begin the game without knowledge of the motives, and must deduce the motives themselves.

B. Every player will have hidden motives and victory conditions.
Deduction of the Killer’s motives is important for major victory.
Deduction of others’ secrets and motives may assist players on fulfilling major and minor victory conditions.
For major victory, it is not important to deduce the Accomplice’s motives.

C. Information. With just starting information, it is unlikely that the player can deduce the killers and their motives without gathering more information during the course of the game. Every player is trying to gather information and sort through what may or may not be important.

D. Every player has a backstory.
All players carry at least one secret. Secrets are hidden in the backstory for each player.

E. There are numerous hints as to the identity and motives of the killer, which may be (1) contained in the secrets, backstories, or information; (2) found in objects in players’ belongings; and (3) otherwise revealed during the game.

F. Upon death of a player, the moderator may or may not reveal part(s) of that player’s backstory.

G. There is NO discussion of this game between players (except between killer and accomplice) until the game has ended.

II. Victory Conditions:

Each player may have his/her own set of victory conditions and can achieve various levels of success.

A. Killer victory conditions
See roles (below) for discussion of the Killer’s victory condition(s).

B. Guest victory conditions
A major victory is achieved if there are no killers left and a guest successfully deduces the identity and motive of the Killer while in the game.

For all good Guests a partial victory is achieved if you are alive when the killers are eliminated from the game.

For a Guest who is killed, he or she achieves minor victory if he or she correctly deduces the identity and motives of the killer by the end of the game/or the start of the séance, if the latter occurs.

A guest’s chances are enhanced if you stay in the game and collect more information.

Each player may have separate minor victory conditions. Minor victory conditions may be (1) explicitly given at the start of the game or (2) may be triggered/altered by in-game events.

Victory conditions MAY change after death (relevant to the medium/séance).

Deduction of motives:
Motives include but are not limited to:
Ambition
Envy
Greed
Guilt
Jealousy
Justice
Hatred
Lust
Passion
Revenge
Vanity

Just matching the killer with a one-word motive is not enough to achieve major victory. To win, you must deduce more than that. Greed for what? Guilt for what? Revenge for what?

III. Public Role/Private Role/Nighttime Power:

A. Public roles
Each player begins with knowledge of all other players’ public personas. Private roles are separate from public.

A player may or may not have known each other prior to game start and may or may not have additional starting information about other players

B. Private roles
Private roles are either Killer, Accomplice, or Guest. There may be good guests and evil guests. Sorcerer/cultists are by definition evil.

C. Powers
Each player will have a power as well. Therefore, each player is composed of:

Public Role: Amanda B. Reckonwith
Private Role: Guest
Orientation: Good
Power: Spy

Upon lynch, orientation and powers will be revealed.

Warning: There are certain powers (like the seer) which are more dangerous to the killer. Therefore, an all-reveal plan of Powers will benefit evil.

IV. Cycles

Each cycle will last approximately 24 hours. Each night cycle will last as long as it takes the moderator to resolve nighttime actions. There will be no lynch votes on weekends. The game will start with a long night 0 cycle that includes a weekend so players can acclimate to the rules.

V. Voting:
Each day, the vote will decide which person to lynch.

The lynch will be a poisoning.

Longest held continuous vote will be the tiebreaker.

Bold your vote, no editing vote posts.

Nightfall voting is allowed.

VI. Objects:
There are objects in the game. They may be relevant to the killer’s motives, special powers, or an individual guest’s secrets.

Some items may be passed by night time action.
Some items may be passed during the day.
Items may be stolen under certain circumstances.
After a player’s death, they may be taken.
There may also be red herrings contained within the objects.

VII. Information:
Information may be related to the motives of the killers, a player's secret, a player's private powers, or rules of the game.

A. Exchange of information:

There are limits on the amount of information are exchanged overnight. In order to win, you will likely need to also rely on publicly shared information.

By design, too much public information will also benefit the killer, who will be able to achieve victory conditions more easily with more information, especially understanding of each person's "secret."

Voluntary transfer can occur by (1) public posting and (2) nighttime sharing (see rules part VIII)

Involuntary transfer can occur by snooping (available to all) and special powers.

All players may publicly share information in the thread. However, there is no guarantee that they are telling the truth or that their information is correct.

To track information and for moderator sanity, all such information will be assigned an unique number.

If a piece of information is publicly revealed word-for-word, it is ineligible from that point forward for exchange or snooping. When shared publicly, the item needs to be quoted in its entirely with its appropriate number. However, players are allowed to fake this information in this manner and each will be provided with “blank” or empty numbers for this purpose.

To prevent an ALL-REVEAL info plan, there are limits on publicly sharing information:

N0: no sharing
D1: 1 piece of information/player
D2: 3 pieces of information/player
D3: 5 pieces of information
D4: no restriction

This does not count allusions/paraphrases.

Allusions/paraphrases do not require accompaniment by the appropriate number.

B. Fake information. Each player will have a certain modicum of numbers through which they can create information pieces.

Blank numbers
Each player is provided a random number of 3-8 blank numbers for their purposes.

The content of blank numbers is subject to approval by the moderator.

You may not share a blank number that has no information.

VIII. Night Actions/Sharing/Snooping

All players have two actions, share and snoop. Other special roles have additional actions.

On N0, each player can snoop one other player. They may NOT share information overnight until N1.

A. Sharing of information:
Each night, a player may PM me with names of persons they are willing to share information with which occurs via the passing of notes. Overnight, I will exchange up to 4 pieces of knowledge between all players with matches. If player A wishes to share 3 pieces of information with player B, and player B wishes to share 2 pieces of information with player A, the lower number will be exchanged between the pairing.

You may share with up to 2 players/night. You may submit more than 2 names, but only the first pairings will be processed.

Sharing is an event done by mutual consent. Please negotiate these pairings during the day or night cycles.

Important:
You may not share with the same player the same information bit twice. If you submit a duplicate piece of information by error it will not be counted as a share opportunity.

You may not share information that is already publicly revealed.

Particular pairings may trigger other in-game events.

B. Snooping of information
Each night, a player may PM me with the name of up to 2 persons to snoop (exception, N0 when you may snoop 1o other player). Their information and/or belongings will be searched. You may learn (1) information relevant to the killers' motives; (2) information relevant to the snooped's secret or role; and/or (3) see or take an object which may be relevant to the killers' motives, the snooped's secret, or their role. This information may include red herrings.

Because the snooping is done in haste, each individual piece of information gained has a 25% chance of transformation (see below). Objects taken will not be transformed.

You may snoop a dead person's belongings/information.

If you snoop somebody on two separate nights, you will receive new information.

If the target has no unique information, you will not gain anything from your snoop.

If two or more persons snoop the same target, they may or may not learn the same information.

C. Transformation
Transformed information will be converted into (1) an opposite statement; (2) a different name inserted instead of the original; (3) other changes as determined by the moderator.
If a piece of information is transformed twice, it reverts to the original information.

D. An example of nighttime orders:

Introduce #47. Acekim is the seer.

Special power

Share with acekim #86, #47, #9

Snoop acekim and jonesy

IX. Evil Roles:

A. The killer will be privy to starting information that the village does not have, per discretion by the moderator.
The killer and accomplice will also have nighttime abilities to share information and snoop, and may have objects that may or may not be red herrings. Information gained by the killers may also be incorrect.

B. Killer. This is the player who has motivation to kill all other guests at the mansion. Due to a fit of amnesia, this player has temporarily forgotten these motives and will be trying to deduce them along with everyone else.

The Killer may post notes anonymously using the Player X account, during the day cycle after approval by the moderator, with any content he or she chooses.

The killer has these nighttime powers:
Introduce information
Night time power
Share info with player(s) A,B,C
Snoop player B and C
Kill player D

The killer was determined randomly from the player list.

The killer is trying to reach parity with the village. The accomplice counts towards this goal, but the cultist and sorcerer do not.

Accomplice. This player will be assisting the killer in killing the other guests. However, this player does not know these motives and will be trying to deduce them as well.

The accomplice has these nighttime powers:
Introduce information
Night time power
Share info with player(s) A,B,C
Snoop player B and C
Kill player D

Kill orders from the Killer trump those from the Accomplice.

The Accomplice will have minor victory conditions unknown to the Killer.

X. Powers (Private)

A. Introduction to powers.
These powers may be held by GUESTS or by KILLERS. There may be more than one of a given role in a game. The Killer and Accomplice cannot be a seer, sorcerer, or cultist.

All players will have powers.

Not all powers will be in play during the game.

The Killer begins with knowledge of which Powers are in the game, although not who possesses which power.

B. Powers
Sorcerer (Guest power only. Wins if the Killer achieves major victory) -- Does not know the identity of the killer, and is also trying to deduce motives. Snooped exchanges of information away from this individual have a 50% chance of transformation to the opposite or a red herring. Information exchanges to this player do not transform (but may have been transformed previously). Also may view 1 person a night and gain his/her exact power, but does not learn killer or guest status.

Cultist -- (Guest power only. Wins if the Killer achieves major victory) knows the identity of the killer, and , but is also trying to deduce motives. Exchanges of information away from this individual have a 50% chance of transformation to the opposite or a red herring.

Seer – (Guest power only). Receives revelations from the moderator. Each night, can PM me a target and will learn whether that player is evil (if the killer, accomplice, or cultist but will not learn this about a sorcerer). However, major victory is only achieved if the killer is lynched AND motives are deduced.

Prophet/Medium – Each night, receives religious revelations from the moderator. These revelations may be exchanged and snooped. After certain in-game conditions have been met, this player has the ability to call for a séance, during which dead players will be able to post. The rules of the séance will be posted at that time. Dead players may have limits on the quantity and/or manner in which they post. Note: victory conditions for players may change after death.

Thief -- Each night, will receive an additional snoop opportunity. Information contained in this extra snoop may have been transformed earlier, but cannot be transformed at time of thieving. The target will not know whether they were thieved, unless an object is taken.

Priest-- Will learn exact private role of players killed at night, but will not know every detail of their role. They will not learn killer/guest status.

Undertaker -- Will learn 2 items of transferable information from each player who died. 10% chance of transformation.

Politician – Wants votes, but doesn’t want to win the majority. Will gain 25% of all transferable information from a player who voted for them during the lynch. They may choose the player. Will round up to nearest whole number for calculations. 10% chance of transformation.

Private eye -- A former detective, with a keen eye for detail. This person will learn 4 pieces of information from every lynched player, at the time of lynch. 10% chance of transformation.

Arts Critic-- Is very widely read and has seen many movies and theatrical performances. Each night, receives revelations from the moderator, which will be coded in language related to literary, theatrical, or pop culture allusions.

Psychic – This power can divine extra information, but only if the target is willing. This person will learn +2 pieces of information from every voluntary exchange. These will be determined randomly. 10% chance of transformation.

Spy – This power will spy on an individual and witness one shared information exchange. Will gain 50% of information from that two-way exchange. 10% chance of transformation

Hunter -- In a 1-1 situation, this player prevents parity and achieves minor victory. This player then immediately gains all information collected by the remaining killer, with no transformation. If he/she correctly deduces the motives, then major victory is achieved.

Soothsayer – This player may submit 3 pieces of information/night to check their veracity and source. They will learn whether that information was added to the game by a player, and/or whether it has been transformed.

There is at least one power that is not known at the beginning of the game. If the mystery power(s) is(are) given to a GUEST, then the Killer will be aware of the nature of this power.

C. Hidden Traits

Each of the following additional traits may or may not be in the game. These players do not know if they possess this trait.

Tinker -- Guest, but if viewed by the seer, will be viewed as a killer. The player does not know that he/she is a tinker. This trait may overlap with other powers.

Confused -- All information moving away from this player have a 50% chance of transformation.

Tough – Will take 2 lynches to remove this guest or killer.

X. Blackmailing
A mechanism for blackmailing. This will be done by PM’d notes, to be forwarded through the moderator.

You may choose to make them anonymous or not.

NO DIRECT PMing of blackmail attempts.

Each player is allowed 2 blackmail attempts through the course of the game.

An example:
“I will reveal #86 publicly unless you give me your wedding ring.”

XI. Order of resolution
During the Night Cycle, orders are performed in the following order:
1. Introduction of information using additional numbers
2. Nighttime power activation/ revelation
3. Sharing and voluntary exchange of information
4. Snoops of information, transfer of objects
5. Night time kill

XII. Twist
All good mysteries include a twist. There is at least one in this game.

*I will say upfront, these are true:
1. The moderator (acekim) is NOT the killer in this game (what a strange twist that would be!). The moderator will die N0 as per WW tradition.
2. There is a killer and accomplice in this game from the player list.

XIII. Hints
The moderator reserves the right to make public or private hints. The moderator has faith in the players’ capability to figure the mystery out by the end of the game.

XIV. Etiquette
1. Except for public revelation of a piece of information (see above), please do not post any PMs, in part or in whole that you might receive from the moderator. You may paraphrase but verbatim posting of backstories is not allowed and may result in immediate removal of the game.
2. No editing vote posts. Please do not delete posts.
3. The dead are limited to a single postmortem zombie post without important content, with the exception of a séance (medium power).

Reminder. No discussion of this game between players until it is declared over.

XV. Miscellaneous
Players’ identities are secret, and will be revealed shortly before game start.

Please reread the rules and victory conditions closely.

Re: Jekyll Island: A WW Mystery
AJ Davida IV, heir to Davida fortune (shugyosha)
The heir to the AJ Davida fortune. The Davidas have long been known as pillars of the Savannah community, contributing to many charitable causes and promoting community togetherness. The family business was originally in construction. AJ was once married to the former Miss Georgia, Enya Goddard.

Buster Cherry, Movie Producer (kimapesan)

Film producer and celebrated playboy Buster Cherry is founder of the wildly successful MDP Studios and built a small independent film company into a giant of Hollywood players. He is best known for his younger days, when he produced immortal classics such as "My Own Private Iowa" but recently, his company has run into a string of bad luck. His last visit to Georgia was for the a civil war epic, Glory II, about the less-celebrated second African-American army unit. Now he's back to check out this party. Maybe he can find the next Hollywood starlet to bring to stardom amid the beauties of Savannah and Jekyll Island.

Diane O’Bolic, pool shark (Moongoddess)
Diane is known for her billiards skills and legendary barfighting skills. She’s seen often in the shady side of town.

Dr. Duwanna Sumey, plastic surgeon (7ofAnn)
A premier plastic surgeon of Savannah, despite her recent move back to Savannah from Los Angeles, Dr. Sumey is renown for her technical skill and face-altering abilities. Brilliant with the scalpel, her transformative powers and ego are widely known throughout the area. She is also stunningly beautiful, but you don’t know how much surgery she herself has had.

Enya Goddard, Former Miss Georgia (kuchick)
Gorgeous and poised, Enya Goddard won the 1993 Miss Georgia Pageant in a landslide. She went on to the round of ten semi-finalists in the Miss America Pageant but did not win. She went on to marry the heir to the AJ David and Sons Meat Packing Company based in Savannah, Georgia. She divorced Mr. David five years later after realizing that her name sounded awful after she hyphenated it. She received a proper settlement. Since her divorce, the gossip pages of the Morning-News have linked her with other bachelor luminaries, and rumor has it that she has applied for the upcoming season of The Bachelorette on ABC.

Kay Sirah-Sirah, businesswoman (Lauramath)
Kay is one of the most prominent businesswomen of Savannah. Always impeccably dressed in the finest imported suits, Kay has made millions, pursuing a talent for making money in whatever capacity. You’ll see her at the finest restaurants around town! An eligible (and wealthy) bachelorette!

Latrell Sihweewong, former NBA player (Latria)
6 foot 10 and still in shape, Latrell was the first Asian-American to play basketball for the Savannah State University Sand Gnats and led his upstart team to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Latrell went to the Minnesota Timberwolves. After 2 unspectacular seasons, Latrell was suspended then kicked out of the NBA for violating the substance abuse policy. All because he was addicted to poppyseed muffins. He didn't like the cold in Minnesota anyway, and has returned to Georgia where he plays pick up games on occasion.

Rocky Shore, longshoreman (agnespoodle)
Rocky is a tough guy, a sailor. He likes boats and works in the Port of Savannah. He has traveled the world and seen many crazy things. Rocky recently broke his leg, and it is in a cast.

Terri Aoki (Xandryyte)
Terri is a barwaitress, who grew up in Savannah. Her lineage goes way back in Savannah’s history. Other than that, people don’t see to know a lot about Terri, except she has (apparently) natural Southern beauty.

Father Theodore Logian (jmilum)
A brilliant boy, Theo was valedictorian of his Savannah high school. He became the Father of the largest parish in Savannah and was well-loved. He has recently renounced the priesthood, for unknown reasons.

Players may begin posting. Your Orientation/Role/Power PMs should be out later this afternoon.

Right now you awaiting N0, and the ferry over to Jekyll Island.

Re: Jekyll Island: A WW Mystery
Coastal Georgia this time of year should be warm with the blossoms of spring, pine lilies and goldenrods, with the gentle beach breezes cooling the warmth of the bright sun rays. But today does not bring such promise, with a storm system threatening to move through like an unwelcome guest. The goldenrods are in bloom but the normally brilliant color is dulled by the grayness of the rain.

At the ferry station, you are startled by the crowd that has gathered. Underneath the umbrellas and raincoats you see some familiar faces. While you are not familiar with everybody, you are startled at the eclectic guest list. Some you know all too well, and some of these characters are not friends in your book. You see some squint and recognize you as well, but you don’t see welcome in their eyes. You reciprocate the suspicious glares. There’s one in a wheelchair, with a cast on his leg.

Some vacation. Some party you’ve been invited to. The silence is only broken by Acekim, the host, who is oddly chipper and greeting people and offering Styrofoam cups, presumably with coffee.

For a moment, you consider getting back in your car and leaving. Alas, your curiosity overwhelms your unease. You board the yacht, privately chartered for this occasion. The wet bar attracts all the guests, who move there en masse like nervous sheep. Despite it being early afternoon, a stiff drink hits the spot. The boat bounds through the choppy ocean, with small talk interrupted by occasional lurches from a bulky wave.

Good afternoon, ladies, gentlemen. It is a pleasure to see y'all here. Call me AJ, we are all friends here, no need for that Mr. Davida nonsense.

Mr. Acekim, so happy to be at your little island, I am so looking forward to it. And my hat goes off to you. How on earth did you assemble such a vision of beauty as all these lovely ladies here?

Yes, I'd love another Scotch.

Rocky is away this weekend and will be back Monday, but is eligible for being snooped N0.

Also, I neglected to send a few players blank numbers. These do not come into play until N1, so I will send sometime before then.

Good luck solving the mystery and fulfilling your various victory conditions.

I do keep a civil tongue in my head. And it stays there quietly while the vulgar one does all the important work.

In any case, I was unaware that it was vulgar to offer auditions to aspiring young starlets. Apparently, you have a civil tongue but a very naughty mind.

But, yes, you sure do have manners here in Savannah. Aside from heat and mosquitoes, it's all you've got here.

b{The boat finally arrives at the dock and you disembark with a sense of relief, given your choppy ride. You luggage is taken onto a cart, which Acekim wheels up. “Mind your steps.” The cart bumps over the cobblestone that forms to the path to the mansion. You pause and enjoy the view for a moment.

Someone offers Rocky help in his wheelchair, but he refuses, not too politely.

Buster gazes at some odd flowers lining the steps up to the Victorian mansion. He counts them quickly—there are ten. “I don’t recognize these.”

Monoflora uniflora, more commonly known as Indian pipes. Native to the area.” says acekim. “You’re not from Georgia so you probably don’t recognize them. Those over there are known as Walter’s Aster.” Your host knows his horticulture.

Rocky switches to crutches.

You are glad to have escaped the chill of the outside wind and rain, which is picking up. Acekim goes to start a fire in the common room and you scurry to your rooms, which are tasteful and full of antique furniture. Each of your bedrooms contains a hand-crafted figurine on the dresser. After you settle yourself, you return to the central grand sitting room. The centerpieces of this room are hunting trophies. In addition to the usual maze of antlers, there is, of course, a wolf’s head. There is a cat purring near the fire. Is it Jonesy?

Acekim has prepared pre-dinner cocktails and hors d’ouerves. You wonder where he gets all this energy. He pours champagne for a toast.

He begins, “Welcome to Jekyll Island!”

“I hope you have made yourselves at home. I have invited you all here as my guests and I trust that you will enjoy each other’s company for this long weekend. Unfortunately there’s nothing I can do about the weather. After the toast I will explain why you are here. Here’s to long life and happiness.”

He drinks, but you pause as you are not feeling as festive as he is. Good thing you hesitated, because acekim suddenly gags and his face turns purple. Gasps and screams. Dr. Sumey rushes over, checks his pulse. “He’s dead.”

You lower your glass and decide not to drink the champagne.}r

Acekim has been murdered.

The weather will worsen and no boat can rescue you for the next week. There is a killer with an accomplice among you.

The guests are reduced to utter silence and shock. A quick search of the premises indicate nobody else on the island. Are you easy pickings for the killer? Or will you be able to cooperate and deduce the identity? Who's going to cook breakfast now that Acekim is dead?

D1 has begun. Voting may commence.

In answer to a few queries, in case it isn't clear:

You may share with up to 2 others, and snoop 2 players on N1.

You cannot double-share with the same player, and you must snoop two separate players.

You may wish to have back-up orders to share information in case someone reneges, and you may submit "share with anyone who wishes to share with me."

You may share information that you gained N0.

Trading info may be more complex than trading beans.

Lynch deadline 3pm BGG. Night orders 9pm BGG. That should provide ample time to pair up for your nightly meetings, and please don't forget Latrell in those calculations as I think he usually gets on in later afternoon.

Conditional votes are allowed as long as they are PUBLICLY posted and clear.

vote agnespoodle

I don't believe that is a real cast. He is faking injury for all we know. I think he has motive.

Also, 7ofAnn I have this secret recipe for skin repair that is passed from generations for generations of the Sihweewong family that would really help your work. Let's meet to chat tonight.

Is that a date?
