Eric and I played a 3000 point battle tonight, Hawkshold vs. Orcs.
I played the humans, and lost badly. As has been a common theme in
games I've lost, a unit on the end of the line routed before I was
expecting it to, and the pinching/flanking bonus just ate up my
line. This time it was a unit of peasants that I placed up against
a hill, figuring they wouldn't get flanked that way. Didn't matter,
first turn a shot from the Goblin Bomb Chucker did 4 hits, caused a
morale check, and they ran.
Two valuable lessons: first, stop trying to be clever and just put
units with good defense on each end of the line. It's too important
to leave to chance. Second, when playing Hawkshold, circle the
morale of the units on the ends, for the same reason. Particularly
when you're getting 6 command points per turn, there's no reason not
to spend a few of them on morale boost.
