What's the difference between user rating and average rating?

I would call it the 'home' screen for a game. It gives you a description, tells you the publisher and designer, and has a statistics section, where the averages are revealed.

Do you mean User Rank and Game Rank? They both represent where the game falls in the database sorted by rating (the top rated game is 1, second highest rated is 2, etc). The only difference between the two is that Game Rank weeds out expansions from the stats.

I understand the different ranks. Below those two ranks on my screen are 'average rating' followed by 'user rating' followed by standard deviation'. The user rating usually is slightly lower than but sometimes considerably lower than the average rating. What's the difference?

One of them (the user rating) is a Bayesian average, and the other is a conventional average.
