What would be the estimated playing time (experienced players) for a 7-player game that starts in the 1st age and ends when an empire reaches the 5th age? It seems to me that a game that covers the 1st to 4th ages gives a good sense of what a full game would have to offer and would provide a reasonably balanced game. I'm interested to see if 7 Ages would make for a good 7-player game that can be played in, at most, 5 hours or a little more.

As an aside, I'm also trying to decide between keeping 7 Ages or Struggle of Empires as my choice game for 7 players. Any opinions as to which you would keep if you had to choose? Which one is more interesting or strategic, and which one would have has less downtime in a 7-player game?

If you are concerned about a five hour time slot with 7 players, then Struggle of Empires is clearly the better choice.Struggle of Empires is a game, Seven Ages is an EXPERIENCE in my book and an incredible one at that. Struggle of Empires is a condensed game with comparatively simple mechanics. The alliance mechanic is ingenious in SoE. Great game.

Seven Ages is a much more detailed game and to play from Age 1 thru Age 5 with 7 experienced players would take an estimated 15-20 hours to complete from our experience (3-4 hours per age at a minimum, but this does depend on how much trading there is, of course, and different play groups are different here).

Normally, you would only play 2 Ages or so for a 5 hour time slot with that many players. The downtime is rather longish when you get into battles. I don't recommend 7 Ages with more than 4-5 players due to the downtime. That said, if you want the ultimate "history re-enactment" gaming experience then 7 Ages is the King.

I echo nearly everything nishikawa-collector wrote. I agree with the estimate of 15-20 hours for a seven player, four age game.

Based on quite a few games now, I agree wholeheartedly with the estimate as well. If you want more than about 1.5 to 2 ages, you'll need more than 1 session.
