I was thinking, Yes I know I've been warned about that...

What is better:
A) Vader
Push the Limit
Engine Upgrade
Homing Missile

B) Vader
Push the Limit
Stealth
Homing Missile

C) Vader
Squad Leader
Stealth
Homing Missile

Finally I noticed he is 41 points, ouch...

Good/Bad/Ugly???

I don't like Push on Vader, because usually two actions is enough and the Advanced is pretty limited in its Green maneuvers (though if you're always Boosting/Barrel Rolling this is less of a problem).

Squad Leader is great on Vader, if he's with the right allies who can benefit from it.

I like Swarm Tactics on Vader a lot, because shooting at a higher PS can be more beneficial for squishy TIEs. Draw Their Fire is also nice because Vader has shields that can sop the damage AND people don't like going after Vader early anyways.

Agree with stoneart69 above: 4 points for a concussion on Vader is still one of the best 4 Points you can spend on this game. He has no trouble getting a missile off, and it's very likely to be one of the most potent attacks of the game. I have a hard time justifying Vader without a missile in my lists.

Enjoy! Let us know how your various experiments with him pan out.

For me Vader is a support ship rather than a direct threat so I always take Squad Leader or Swarm Tactics on him.

It's always worth equipping him with a missile for that early punch, and with an Engine Upgrade he's rarely going to be in the enemy's fire arc (turrets excepted). The Engine upgrade will last as long as Vader so for me gives more return on points than the Stealth Device.

Run him with ships that can benefit from the extra action that happens at PS9, or that would benefit from firing first.

If I were building Vader to be a direct threat I'd go with something like:

Vader
Expose
Engine Upgrade
Assault Missile/Homing Missile (depending on how popular Swarms are!)

Assuming that you're able to maneuver out of firing arcs you can afford to use Expose to up the damage of his main gun. Combining it with an Assault missile early on gives you a 5 red die attack that can splash when it hits (hard to miss with 5 red!) EDIT - this is wrong, expose only boosts Primary Weapons.

Vader's ability to TL + Focus in one turn and move/fire on PS9 makes him very effective with missiles.

I like Vader with any of the ship modifications. Push the limit means you're picking up stress that's not terribly easy to get rid of with a TIE Advanced. If you're flying him in formation, Swarm Tactics is a good elite skill to add - you could boost an Academy Pilot all the way to PS9.

Expose only works on primary weapon, not missiles.

As others have pointed out, and for similar reasons, I like Concussion Missiles and am less excited about Push the Limit.

Also, friends don't let friends run Expose.

So my favorite build for Vader looks like this:
[38] Vader (29) + Squad Leader (2) + Concussion Missile (4) + Stealth (3)

The major drawback is his cost. You get a good, durable support ship with a nice little alpha strike, but for the same 38 points you can get (eg) a Bounty Hunter with Recon Specialist and a Seismic Charge... So he's a pilot I think very carefully about deploying, these days.

D'oh! I guess that would be why I've never used it - must have realised that and forgotten...

If I have to run Vader, I'd go with:

Vader + Engine Upgrade + Concussion Missile (37)
or
Vader + Engine Upgrade + Daredevil + Concussion Missile (40)

With two actions, the Concussion Missile is almost exactly as potent as the Homing Missile at 1 point less in cost. I see a lot of people put PtL on Vader but I think it's a waste of points that I'd rather spend improving my other pilots. Vader + Boost is very hard to kill. Vader + Boost + Daredevil is almost impossible for your opponent to ever get a shot at... but he's still a 2-attack ship, so while he's almost certain to survive, he might not make many kills either.

Don't put PTL on Vader...Boost is good though, and I think most people under value Assault Missiles in the meta. I wouldn't worry about the elite pilot spot, unless you K-turn a lot (which shouldn't happen if you take boost), in which case Adrenaline Rush is good.

I agree with the engine upgrade part here. PTL is overkill on him imo. id run something like swarm tactics, or possibly squad leader, marksmanship or even determination but its really up to what u r trying to do with him. daredevil is very good but its a bit expensive for a guy that starts at base cost 29 + engine upgrade = 33! now u want more points invested... thats getting overly expensive... at the most id give him concussion missiles or homing missiles but u have to draw the line somewhere.
i guess a good question here will would be HOW MANY points of upgrades is worth putting on Vader?? i suspect the optimal total cost is about 34-36.

Vader is a bit like Wedge. he is always a prime target for the enemy, especially tricked out with upgrades. that means u have to fly him a little defensively (especially early on) or give him some support ships... Black Squadron Pilot/Draw Their Fire is nice here but its rarely seen. i think the main reason is people want to just run the cheapest possible support ships. I agree with an earlier comment here that Vader is really a support ship. At close range he is a beast as u can go focus + target lock on the same target... but u have to keep him out of the heavy fire early. if u can do that he will shine later in the battle.

engine upgrade is now nearly a must on Vader. Afterwards, the options available is so plentiful there really isnt a "best", but i liked him with either Expose or Veteran Instincts. Expose allows him to cause a lot more destruction while still maintaining his evasiveness, and Veteran Instincts is quite a good counter against high PS monsters like Soontir, Turr, Wedge, and against Han to a limited degree
