What makes this game different from atlas's regular 2nd ed Tomb of the Lich lord? What makes it epic?

It isn't a new version of Tomb of the Lichlord, rather a higher level add on. The "Epic" games are a continuation of the series, and in this case a continuation of TotL "story", allowing characters to advance to level 7, with stronger cards. There are several threads at the studiodenmark.com forums (under the XCG topic) which can give you some ideas as to the direction the new set (and those that follow) will take.

Like the rest, it can be used as an addon to the previous games, or a standalone game with characters starting at level 4 instead of level 1.

Joel is exactly right. This is a stand-alone game, you can begin at "epic" level (4th level) or play it in conjunction with any of the other sets starting at 1st level and playing your way up to 7th level.

In many ways it will go back to the roots of Dungeoneer with very simple, easy to play, and useful cards. On the other hand it will take advantage of some of the cool innovations like pumpable monsters and special event cards similiar to the Winter Spell from the Realm of the Ice Witch set.

Think of it as a high-level module for your favorite fantasy RPG.

Wow, I hadn't seen anything yet on the "Epic" play of this new set, and going up to Level 7 is quite appealing. I've only played Tomb once, but I'm excited to play some more in the very near future (Thursday and Saturday).
It's a really cool game. Loaded, in a good way. Great artwork and some fun twists and turns.
Looking forward to playing the other sets and this one, too.

How does the higher levels work? Are there generic cards for the extra levels or are the higher level cards character specific? If they are character specific, does the set include the lower level cards for the characters or are the higher level cards for the characters from the basic lich lord set.

Both. Sort of. The Epic level cards have a 4th level stat line, and then for levels 5, 6, & 7 they have either 0 or +1 for the three stats. They can be used generically with any character, but the 6 character cards do line up with the original 6 characters from Tomb. There are also additional abilities and higher life/Boon/treasure limits once you reach "Epic" levels. There's an example on the Studiodenmark.com forums that shows one of the new character cards.

I do like the sense of humor in this set, particularly the 51-foot rope, and the Holier Lantern.
